I can handle the crime, the crumbling infrastructure and the fact that my kids education isn't quite what mine was, but messing with my imports is taking it one step too far.

I wonder if Australia will accept SARS harassment as a valid reason for refugee status. At least there you get to spend up to $1000 at a time duty free and vat free. Surely they'll understand. Smile

OK! so my parcel was detained by SARS.Contacted by a Customs official and told to appoint an agent if I wanted my parcel to clear.

JMK1, if you don't mind me asking (PM me), how much was the value of the order? I'm trying to figure out what logic they're applying here in detaining parcels. My package of R12.5k is currently detained, but one worth almost three times that cleared straight through in September, and it was much bulkier than this one.

Can't figure these clowns out smiley18.gif.flex2010-01-19 06:27:50

There does not appear to be any logic.I questioned the customs official who phoned me as I thought it was value based (my order was R11.5k)not so it appears to be random.Another hubber's parcel is 3k and also detained. It was not a huge inconvenience, merely the fact that I got nailed duties.

Flex after 15 years im still trying to figure them out, we have the same problem with airfreight cargo. Customs officials will just walk through the warehouses and detain goods for no apparent reason other than they feel like it and they have the right to

i think it's a new year's resolution kicking into action here. LBS probably moaning like a bunch of heifers on heat, but not much SARS can do except make it as pedantic as the law allows.

?

I dont suppose any one of you have buddies at customs that can tally up the number of detentions for items coming from CRC versus any other major online retailer, Amazon/other... that would give some confidence it's ?is, or isnt, a CRC specific focus from SARS.

as on outsider who has never imported anything - do you guys object to paying import duties because of the inconsistent nature of the duties?

The issue is not the duties at all. For most CRC stuff, all you pay is VAT.

I think almost all of us are quite happy to pay what is legally owed.

We used to pay this to the courier when he delivered or at the Post Office when we picked up the goods.

What we are objecting to is the hassle of having to employ a clearing agent. There does not seem to be any logic applied here.

Customs have always done random spot tjecks, both on postal (like Air Parcel Post and Parcelforce)  and formal shipping agent cleared goods (like UPS) - its the luck of the draw.

I've got no problem with spot tjecks. If someone's importing Super Record and trying to pay VAT on Veloce, that needs to be discovered and stopped.

However, I don't see why the customer needs to employ the services of a clearing agent to facilitate these spot checks...

These spot checks don't seem to be random, though, if you look at the number of hubbers that all of a sudden are having their parcels detained or have been waiting ages for them to arrive.

I have no issue paying what's legally owing, as Jules said its just the inconvenience that gets me.
