Is it necessary to train with an energy drink during afternoon rides or can you just train on water?  I talking about between 1h30 and 2h00 rides some of some are quite intense.

I want to lose weight as soon and much as possible.

Fanie, I also had that question a year or two back.

 

Through tried and tested, I found that for training (keeping in mind that you want to lose weight), water should be fine. As long as you use a good recovery drink (containing protein, potassium, magnesium, maybe Glutamine, etc) you should be fine.

 

There is this whole scientific theory that "training on less" and "running on empty" is a good training technique, but I guess at my level, I don't see the point. I have read that some pro's do it. There was an interesting article a couple of months back about Rasmussen's training methods... Bicycling...

personaly i feel alot better after a ride on cheap energy drink than on water, dont feel so tired, might be all in te mind.

for losing weight i.m.o ride with water

I've gone from no bottle for under 2hour rides to a bottle of water and then onto energy drink, for me it helps keeping the power up. I lost to much weight and need to take on energy as I ride now. You got a crap load of reserves, use that:-P

If you are doing rides of less than an 2hrs water is adequate as your body has sufficient glycogen stores to sustain energy levels for that duration. If you are riding longer than that you need to consume carbs / electrolytes (found in all leading energy drinks).. If you riding really long you need to include protein as well..

Boy, don't know if you wanna look like that! Sometimes wonder if a body like that could have enough stored glycogen for long rides... But I guess they know what they're doing.
