Gasping Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 As of late, I see a tendency by some Hubbers to use foul language on their posts in the forums. I am not referring to political leanings (one way or the other) - that might be offensive, but normally the language used to express these views is not foul. I am not the innocent here either. I do try to use "milder words" (if such a thing exists) and even then I try to disguise the word albeit very thinly. What say the Hubbers? https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=78030&PN=3 is a reference.Gasping2010-02-25 15:01:44

Dibles Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I always try and conduct myself in a ladylike manner and I never use vulgar language under any circumstances. I've found that just by reading the posts and being exposed to the swearing (even disguised) that I'm now starting to swear when I get upset about something. I honestly don't like it at all but what can I do (apart from leave the Hub) as I'm in the minority.
Hog_ Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I'm not offended by foul language, but I do feel it should be kept under control for one reason: Lots of companies have filters that pick up on swearwords and will block access to visitors, or may even get them in trouble with their employers. While everyone should have the right to express themselves, if it affects other peoples working environment it's not cool.
The_Break Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 There is a lovely afrikaans word that describes behaviour like that:"common" (need to give it a thick afrikaans accept when you use it though.)
jollypoo Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Disguising foul language is easy. and somewhat respectful to others. .
fandacious Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 The hub blocks swear words already. What more do you want?
HowellingWulf Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I'm not offended by foul language' date=' but I do feel it should be kept under control for one reason: Lots of companies have filters that pick up on swearwords and will block access to visitors, or may even get them in trouble with their employers. [/quote'] I'm with you on this one Hog - it's like when somebody forwards you porn at work - you are in trouble all though you did not specifically go trawling for boobies so you end up being in a fair ammount of trouble due to somebody else's actions. Not cool. Kind of reminds me of that exchange of words between the Dude and the Stranger in the movie The Big Lebowski:The Stranger: There's just one thing, Dude. The Dude: And what's that? The Stranger: Do you have to use so many cuss words? The Dude: What the f*ck you talking about? The Stranger: Okay, Dude. Have it your way.So maybe that has no relevance to this thread but just thinking of that movie makes me laugh.

dirtrider Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 There is a lovely afrikaans word that describes behaviour like that: "common" (need to give it a thick afrikaans accept when you use it though.) That is fresh coming from you .
Mojoman Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Makes little difference to me as long as it is not too crude or overly abusive...on second thought how are you going to moderate that!!
Racingsnail Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 The issue for me is that the Hub is potentially the place a youngster could come and get advise and info on cycling. If the language is fowl, the youngsters parents will not want/allow him or her to visit the site.If someone gets so irate they have to swear, maybe that should be PM'd.
Mudsimus Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 There is a lovely afrikaans word that describes behaviour like that:"common" (need to give it a thick afrikaans accept when you use it though.) Im a proud kommin dutchman.
