Import duties on cycling goods

Has anyone bought a bike from bike-discount before? I'm considering getting a radon swoop. Would I pay only vat on 110% the value of the bike? Or would I also pay 15% levy? Sars website seems to show Europe as exempt from import duty on bicycles. Have I misunderstood?

Yip you do have it wrong unfortunately.. EU is a EUR1 Certificate. So you will have to pay the 15% duties + 10% and 14%

where do frames fit in?

Hi guys (and gals)

So which equation should we be working with here?

cycling shorts (classified as clothing) : 67.3%

shoes, socks, bags : 61.6%

Gloves : 50.0%

Helmets (fullface or other) : 44.3%

Knee pads and other protective equipment : 38.5%

plastic bottles : 32.7%

whole bicycles : 32.7%

Goggles : 15.4%

bike components : 15.4%

cycling electronics : 15.4%

OR

cycling shorts (classified as clothing): 45%

shoes, socks, bags: 40%

Gloves: 30%

Helmets (fullface or other): 25%

Knee pads and other protective equipment: 20%

plastic bottles: 15%

whole bicycles: 15%

Goggles: 0%

bike components: 0%

cycling electronics: 0%

Also, what have been peoples experiences with ordering with CRC. Ive only heard good things but is there anyone out there thats been pinged for import duties with hidden costs etc. I support my local bike shop as much as I can but sometines it's all about economics.

Any info would be appreciative. Cheers

CRC is good but they ship via royal mail if using free shipping.

Prefer evans.com , free shipping is always dhl and they are typically 5-10% cheaper than crc.

They dont have as much in their store though.

It seems as if CRC does not deduct the 20% UK VAT:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-105-5800-11-speed-road-cassette/rp-prod116489

UK Price:  £29.99.  SA price:  £27.49

The same item at Evans Cycles:

https://www.evanscycles.com/shimano-105-5800-11-speed-road-cassette-EV219234

UK Price:  £27.49.  SA price:  £22.91.

Anybody know why CRC does not deduct UK VAT?

"VAT in Northern Ireland:  The VAT system in Northern Ireland is policed by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)".

This is the same as the rest of the UK.  Hence they should apply VAT the same way...

I'll send them a mail to clarify.  Just for my curiosity...

Before CRC was my LBS, when I was in SA, I am sure that the VAT difference was reflective of the VAT rate.

Good luck.

Just a quick question; if I order a pair of forks and a pair of kneeguards from CR in the same order, will kneeguard (i.e. clothing) tax be added to both items, so across the whole order, or each item get respective tax added?

Kneeguards are afaik classed as protection, or they were when I bought a set from them.

And no, it shouldn't (if one item attracts tax) as each item should be calculated separately. But Lexx can clarify. I'm sure some operators don't go to those lengths and just apply blanket rates if one item in a shipment says something.

that is a bit dodgy, UK vat is 20%, I checked as well and on that item, only GBP 2.50 is deducted from the price if you change your settings form UL to SA? The 'SA' price ex vat should be more like GBP 24.20 or there abouts, not GBP 27.49?

keen to see what their reply i on this.

Hope someone can help answer my question.

Is the import duty on a complete groupset just 10% plus 14% VAT?

No. No import duty. VAT is calculated on the invoice price + 10%, so essentially you're paying VAT at 15.4%.
