Hi Guys,

I have just started building my first SS Mtb, what is a good gear ratio to start off with? I am building a 26er with a GT frame, using 170mm cranks. Frame size is a large and I am 1.84m tall.

Thank you

Martin

Start with 32/18. It's the best in between ratio in my opinion.

Hi there. ..viewing the hub via tapatalk so I don't know the area or the trails that you ride.

If you have a bit of climbing the 32 / 18 would serve you well and if it is flattish or you are strong then a 32 / 16 is the ticket.

Why the short cranks btw.... For your height a std 175mm should be what you are spinning

Hi Hairy,

I live in Centurion - so fairly flat. I will start off with the 32/18 and take it from there,I got the 170mm crank for quite a bargain - will it make a huge difference? I will be using the SS to play around with and for CM - not planning to become a serious SS'er.

Thank you

your first mistake is assuming that the ss bug will not bite ;)

The crank will suffice for what you want to do but a 175mm will allow more leverage

Hahahaha - not a serious SSr

That's what i said a few years ago, now I could actually sell my other 3 bikes as they never see the sun...

Wrt ratio - 32:18 to start and later you might progress to 32:17 as all round ride/race setup, depends on your stomping ground. I ride 34:18 (=32:17) all the time everywhere....

Wrt 170 crank - I also picked up a 170 crank for a bargain and it works fine, it even feels as if I might have more ground clearance but that's probably the voices in my head

I'm rolling a 26" rigid with a 32/16, only really done CM & a Spruit ride with it, not sure if it'll go pear when i get to eg VG. It'll be a long time before i know, bike is going back to geared for the 9yr old to ride

Your Ragley should be running something similar... ;)

It should ja, but is running a 120 fork with an external bottom cup, at the moment it's a 1x9, but will be back as a 1x1 on Sunday
