i always thought that mountain bikers were happy people .... whether it was the mountain biking that made them happy or happy people taking up mtb ...

there may have been some hubbers in the slow group of the long ride on saturday - i heard some hub-talk when we waited in the pine-tree shade after one rider had a bad-ish fall.

the climbs were too long, or too steep, or not steep enough; the singletrack was too technical, or too easy, or too rutted; the group were too slow, they stopped too often, they shouldn't have stopped for a swim. You were tired, you were cramping from all the waiting, you wanted a steak, it's hot, you're not used to being our all day; you just want this ride to end - i can't remember all the complaints -

but if you're on the hub - between all the complaining i was wondering why you did not join the fast group? if you were that much faster then the slow group? you had 2 chances - in the morning when we split up, and later when we caught up with them cos they were waiting for the ambulance to fill up with water

would it not have been easier to stay at home and just braai a steak?

Ha, thats life, people are self absorbed, if it puts them out its an issue, but most dont mean anything by it, they just see it as a conversation topic, "I would prefer rain today,.... "No I like it sunny its too cold".....that sort of banter, I wouldnt let it worry me.

Haha no!!! Then they would have had to go do the race at Van Gaalens, and whine about that again! Too difficult, too hot, not enough water, no grading of the ride beforehand.

I have to also say, theres nothing wrong with ligitimate complaints, if a race is advertised as "for beginners" for eg, and is clearly very difficult, then there is a legitimate complaint, or if the organisers say the race is 80kms and it turns out 110kms, then yeah, there is reason to complain and people not only should, but MUST do so.

The notion that people are just whiners is also wrong, when you pay for something based on an advert or a write up and have no experience of the item or event, you are expecting the event to conform to the ad. If it do's not, then complain, its your money and your time, both are important to you and by shutting up (because you dont want to be seen as a whiner) you are condoning poor service and behaviour, which is also NOT acceptable.

If you have travelled around the USA you will know, service levels are at a standard we can only hope for here, and a BIG,BIG reason is people COMPLAIN, loudly and often and they expect compensation or an apology - if we want levels to improve here - I see nothing wrong in complaining.

@cat-i.

I was in that Group.

The 6.3ft guy on the Zaskar.

I though that was a great day out. 8h30 was a long time though. But guys must take it for what it is. A long slow ride!

I do beleive that some people were not riding in their depths, and should have been on the coffee ride, but we all survived.

PS: Did i propose to you at the top of that moster climb in the afternoon?

After we discussed bling?

Hardship is the mountain biker's friend. If you don't like hardship, which includes ruts, sand, uphills, rocks, crashes, flat tyres, broken stuff that takes ingenuity, pliers and cable ties to fix, mud, cold, getting lost, getting broken, getting stuffed, then take up road riding.

the name for this thread is pretty damn good. I know I whined like a baby after that race. What a great course, but Summer races need to start earlier than 8 15 which was my start time. We were sweating waiting for the start. I cant imagine how the people riding the 70k race survived that heat.

Dont go to Ocean Basket and complain that there's only fish on the menu...

Anything in the Magalies area is gonna be tough. The area is rocky and hilly no matter what direction you head in (apart from the schweet singletrack by the river)

Hope you guys had a great ride!!

After our ride yesterday my brain is just thinking food, so all my Jeremy Clarkson style metaphors this morning include a reference to it, hahaha.
