With all the posts about the complexity of obtaining a CSA License I started the process with some trepidation but surprise surprise it was quite easy and relatively cheap.

I am no racer so the cyclosport option was my target.

Step 1. Log on to www.roag.co.za

Step 2. Join Roag (free)

Step 3. Join Club Roag (R50.00)

Step 4. Log on to www.cyclingsa.com

Step 5. Apply for membership (R75.00)

Step 6. Wait for clearance from Club (took 24 hours)

Step 7. Wait for clearance from Provincial body ( took less than 24 hours. Well done Retief!)

Step 8. Log in to www.cyclingsa.com and download membership card.

Hey presto I have a license R125.00 and 3 days later.

I applied for begining of December and must say the communication on my status has been good, received emails telling me they received it, then each stage of verification up to today where i was informed that my CSA memebership had been approved. Smiley from me :D

Do you still need a membership if you are part of PPA? ;/ very confused with this whole clubs vs groups vs day licenses vs year licenses.

1) When do you need a license?

Gauteng you also need to join Central Gauteng Cycling (R75)so it will be R150 for CSA and CGC, with another option of taking out RAF insurance.

You only need a license if you want to do do SA and provincial champs and race with the big boys in elites -----------> vet bunches. You will have to take out a CSA membership first and ontop of that, buy a license. But for all the other races you will need a CSA membership. Without it, you will need to take out a day license for every race you do.

Luckly there are still races that does not require a license .

Which ones?

I don't agree with the aims/methods of CSA so want to support non CSA races.

I joined ROAG at the beginning of the year and also paid my R75 to CSA, refusing to support CGC's request for a further R75.

Raced the first part of the year in licenced vets, showing my previous (2009) licence when asked. Never queried.

Showed the same licence when I fetched my number at the 94.7 expo, was told that it was the previous years and they then checked to see whether I was in fact licenced, which the little man in the computer confirmed. So the bottom line is, you dont have to pay CGC's R75 !!

I think that kinda clears up my issue. Do most races require a "day license". I know the Argus did but Die Burger didn't?

And no I am not racing with the elites hehe
