I did my first ghetto tubeless conversion 2 weeks ago, and my primary observation about the UST Nevegals I put on was "@#$! these @#$$%^ers are hard to get onto the rim!!"

Quite clearly, besides having thick sidewalls, the fit is a lot tighter, possibly what contributes to them supposedly holding air better.

and staying on the rim better...

I have a GEAX UST on a DT Swiss rim and it too looses air. I have to pump it once a week.

What Geax and Dt Swiss are you using? I use the same combo front and its pretty tight. (Geax Saguaro/Dt Swiss 4.2D)

John jy moet werk!

The TNT Saguaro is a favourite amongst the xterra hawaii guys, and nothing we have in this country compares to how sharp those lava rocks are.

I've run Rocket Rons (non UST) with a tubeless conversion on my wheels since i got it. Over the w/end, slashed (fit my pinkie in size hole) the back tyre over stones/rocks climbing up Breedts Nek. I believe a UST would've kept me rolling. So new tyre, the gator, bomb, time taken to fix etc, if you trash a non-UST every 3 months, it's not worth the price or weight saving imo.

I do seem to have to check pressure a lot more often, almost daily they down by about .2 bar, also seems to have lost almost all the sealant in 2.5 months?

MTB tyres i think are easier to put on in general compared to some road tyres!

I agree with others: what type of riding you do would depend on what setup you'd choose.

Kinda Off topic:

Is there a diff between UST and Tubeless Ready?

I've only ever used Non UST tyres, not only for weight reasons but mainly because I could not find the UST version at my LBS. So far have not had any side wall issues other than a little pin prick sized hole that STans sealed no problems.

Ja the non ust tyres tend to loose some pressure overnight, but imo you should always check and if required adjust your tyre pressure before every ride irrespective of the system installed.

For the Epic I'm considering going over to a proper UST tyre for maximum puncture protection....

I've gone the other route, got normal rims with rim tape , nice light tube with tubeless Race Kings on them. That works for me.

Once the Race kings are buggered going to go with something else again. I think, this whole tubeless craze is something not for me I dont ride a low pressure so wont have snake bites in the tube.

You really should try the lower pressures tubeless give you, but that aside, dont you get allot of thorns in the tyre tread that flat the tube ?

eish i have Maxxis none-UST tires on my Mavic SLR UST wheels.. the front tyre has climbed off the rim or fast cornering twice leaving me crashing into the ground...

wheels pumped hard.. i have now bought a UST tire for the front wheel with hopes the thicker sidewall will stick better...

will use none UST at tha back for there is less danger..

im **** scared at the moment going hard into a corner... hopefully the UST tire will sort it out.

Hey Renier, when we going for a ride man? I thought you gonna give up the mtbiking thing!

It seems like it all depends on the brand of tire used. I had a Merida 96 with Rocket Rons. These were so light and the side walls so thin that you could remove and install the tire without using levels. Changed to Maxxis Crossmark LUST and boy, you battled to install/remove the tire. In a years riding, never had a puncture. The tires did loose some pressure, but it totally stopped after about a month.

Bought a 29er with standard Maxxis Crossmark and the result quite the same as the Rocket Rons. Three races - 5 punctures!. Tried to make it tubeless with no result. You simply could not get air into the tire. After hours of frustration, gave up and install tubes for last race. Race done and one wheel flat again.

Bought Bontrager Tubeless ready tires (Jones XR and XDX) and it seated first time. Pumped it without sealant and at 2,5bar, the XDX just exploded of the rim. Noways I will trust it. My impression is that the beading cannot compare to a brand like Maxxis or Conti.

Tried to get Maxxis Crossmark LUST, spoke to the agend, will only arrive in SA the last week of January.

Did my research (thanks to all the MTBikers on the Hub) and found a lot of people using the Continental tires. Also find out that they will not be making UST versions for 29ers at all. Bought a 2,4 Mountain King and a 2.2 Race King. The tires fitted about the same as the Maxxis. Also battled to get air in, but it did take. It is now a week later and it is loosing less pressure than the Maxxis Crossmark LUST.

Now waiting to do the first race on these.

My impression was that the sidewall thickness of the Conti's was about halfway between the non UST Maxxis and UST Maxxis.

If it wasn't for the fact that I can now get UST tyres for the same price as the non-ust I would still be riding non-ust . Never ever had a problem with seating , burping , loosing pressure on the Kenda non-ust that I raced for many years . Had one sidewall cut but I think even a UST would have failed . But we are talking about non-ust tyres on UST rims ? Not getto , Stans or any other conversion ?

The tight fit of UST also depends on the rims. This is based on my only experience with toobless: Continentals on Mavic's went on easily with a bit of thumb pressure, Schwabe on Stan's Crest rims needed some heavy duty work.

Expenses: get from CWC on-line, Local BS prices generally are a rip-off. ie R450 vs R600

Must also say its really worth all the extra hassle and expense of doing tubeless properly, have not had a flat all year :) And the year is almost done so I assume my luck will hold.

Remember that I am referring to 29" tires. Or did you actually bought 29" tires from them? I got my 26" Crossmark LUST from the same shop for R275 a year ago.
