howzit hubbers

any help with the following would be greatly appreciated.

 

Problem:

my gears keep hunting on the rear cassette. taken my bike to my LBS and had the gears tuned. works well for about 30-40km and then the same problem. as soon as i put power down on the cranks the chain jumps on the rear cassette.

 

since i have replaced with a brand new:

Chain HG-75

rear cassette shimano XT

rear derailer shimano XT

 

had my gears tuned over and over again. they work for a short time and then start acting up again. getting very annoying now.

 

could it be the shifters or low quality cables. dont know what cable are in at the moment but sute they are entry level.

 

help please, this is ruining my MTB experiance

I'm no expert, but there two other things I would consider.

 

Worn cables and housings can cause crappy shifting. If you are going to change them, change them both. Only changing cables doesn't help.

 

Or else there is a chance your hanger is bent. Could that be a possibility?

 

Both of those are not too expensive to change. Good luck

Had the same issue , replaced the cable and housing and taa daaa as good as new...

My money is on a bent hanger or worn derailleur - these two problems cause radnom hunting.

 

Poorly tensioned gear cable causes predictable hunting :)

I have the same problem with my road setup. Changed chain, cassette, cables and housing and the guide under the bb. My hanger is fine so I think the shifter or derailer must be the problem. Luckily I have two bikes so I can change components between them. Taking forever 'though as problem is not consistent and have to do it one piece at a time. Hope you (and I) solve it soon!

This is quite a common problem. No gear setup will stay perfect for very long.

Mine has been perfect for 18 months now on a training bike and I have his exact same setup. I had to adjust the tension once with the barrels on the shifters after the initial cable stretch(i am assuming). There is defnitely something else wrong

Just a thought if you have changed chain and cassette, what about middle chainring ..... use it, don't use it ;)

 

A worn chainring wont cause the problems he's saying he gets.

Mine has been perfect since before, and including, Joberg2c. If you spent good money for good components, you should be able to get them to shift perfectly. I don't believe anyone who says they don't stay right for long.

 

I think your cables and housing should be your first thing you change. It is cheap and will most likely sort out the problem.

Just to throw something out there ... are you riding a duallie and are the pivots/bearings fastened correctly and are they now worn or have any slop.

 

Furthermore should you be on a duallie do you have enough slack on the gear cables to compensate for the suspension action?

 

Also just check your chain length is correct. The parktool site has good advice on how to check this.
