There's no way on can ride with an MP3 blasting sweet sounds were I live. How the hell am I going to hear that hippo rumbling thru the bush or them Rhino poachers making a run for it.

What about all the deaf guys that ride? I use my Ipod all the time on the road, cuts out the boredom. Hvae Never used it on a trail, prefer that sounds of me shouting OH Sh#t :P

There seem to be a helluva lot of deaf guys that ride. Especially on singletrack. :nuke:

I love riding with my earphones. Can't wait for technology advances to develop a monitor that can hande the sunlight, then I can watch my training dvd's or whatever movie tickles my fancy

I saw something when I was out in the bush the other day that taught me a bit of a lesson.

A whole herd of Impala at a waterhole, and one of them - well he was getting the groove on!

Purple Skull Candys screwed into those earholes ! Shakin' the booty.

:o Suddenly all his mates ran away..................

From the PPA newsletter.

DISQUALIFICATIONS AT PPA FUNRIDES

We are very pleased to report that the number of rider disqualifications at events decreased dramatically towards the end of the Spring funride season. One PPA member was suspended until 2012 for repeatedly taking shortcuts, yet crossing the timing mats.

During Spring, cyclists were disqualified as follows:

White line transgressions: 10

PCS (league) riders failing to “roll-in”: 4

Not completing the full route: 3

Dangerous riding: 1

Riding in the wrong group: 8

Using an iPod while riding: 1

ride using only one ear piece (left ear) when on the road. not much scenary when road riding. but when mtb, then no music, only enjoying the dirt!!!

I must admit I commute with an ipod, however I only use it with the left earpiece at a decent volume, so I can still hear what is happening around me.

And in CT with the wind, I sometime do not even hear what is playing.

I sometimes listen to music especially when I ride hills, but I never use earphones. I put my phone in one of those top tube bags that normally gets used for energy bars etc. and play the music over its loudspeaker, just loud enough to make out the beat.

I have tagged all my songs with the BPM so that I can create a playlist with a specific cadence depending on the hill and what I want to achieve.

I tried riding with an MP3 player once and felt so unsafe I've never tried again. I won't ride with them on my motorbike, either...

Have you guys seen this?

Its called Podio. Its an MP3 player with a built-in speaker (it puts out really crisp, clear audio at a decent volume).

http://www.podio.com.tw/

Yes I know its a shameless plug seeing as I am the importer and local distributor, but I really believe in the product and the safety benefits of riding without earphones stuck in your ears.

Available from many cycle shops throughout SA.

Don't think its cool at all to ride on a real bike (MTB or road) with earphones... There's a reason why its not allowed on races, cause its UNSAFE!!! Seen a runner almost getting taken out by a bus once, cause he couldn't hear the monster coming on behind him.

I use it on a stationary bike and on a treadmill to overcome the boredness and use songs to guide me during interval sessions so that I do not have to look at the time, but that's only indoors. While i'm outside, I listen to whatever is around me :)
