I get annoyed with people who are blatantly staring at me who I greet, and just carry on staring not saying a word. Yes I know I only have 1 wheel..... but if you're going to stare at least say "Hi".

Then again the staring is probably better than the so very highly *original* phrase, "Hey, you've lost a wheel" .. or "Hey, where is your other wheel"... seriously dude.... is that the *best* you can come up with ??

Whats the story? Why are road cyclists so unfriendly? Is it an image thing? Or because i'm ....a mtbiker?

Went for an early morning ride with a mate on the road with our MTB's, passed most probably 50 guys on road bikes, not one greeted, past 4 on MTB's and the all said howzit.

Uhm, maybe just think about riding in a big group. You have to concentrate all the time on whats happening around you, just a lapse in concentration and wheels touch, and a big crash will follow. Maybe thats the reason why they didn't greet.

No I wasn't, but thats something few people(runners, more social riders) who doesn't ride in big groups understand.

If that's you in your avatar, I would also just look at you funny.

i can chase a back wheel with the best of them!

Well there is your problem right there, I normally pass them and give a lekka sarcastic haazit and then let them chase my back wheel.

Excuse me! Do I take my road bike on your mountain bike trails? Why do Mtbers think they can muscle in on our roads and still expect effusive greetings? You're just cluttering our "track" with those lunky things, and then we have to overtake. The least you could do is ride on the pavement.

Well said Le Turbo

I ride my mtb more now days, but when I do ride my road bike I see plenty mtb'ers on the road-what for when there is plenty of off road available?

And riding in mtb'er areas such as Hekpoort, Van Gaalens and Groenies there have been loads of mtb'ers that don't greet!

I'm a MTBiker but decided to do the FastOne yesterday with my road bike for a change, some snobbish road biker came to me and asked me how can I wear this cycling jersey if I'm not riding on a Pinarello(The cycling jersey is not branded Pinarello though but more Rudy project etc etc etc)? I had a very good race time and probably beat them as well.

WTF do they care, what does it matter to THEM and why is the dress code an issue to these snobbish road cyclist? They're all BMW drivers where cycling is the least important issue on hand but bike and clothing brands are much more important...regarding my previous post I'm not even going to do the effort to greet F$%^&* roadies anymore. They're all still cycling with the seatpost up their arses....

It is a weird phenomenon – a bunch us (Mounties) have been gathering at a parking area at “my local Spar” every Saturday morning before a ride. The Roadies sometimes meet up at the same place but keep at least 30m between us and them. You should have seen the surprise on their faces when we rode over to go and say hi – now it is a regular thing, but it still starts out as two separate groups every Saturday – it is like a strange segregation between the two disciplines, but it only takes someone to go and break the ice.

These discussions are amusing enough. But I think that the dedicated MTB'ers are often guilty of reverse snobbery.

While the exclusive MTB'ers all claim that they are humble, genuine, earthy and friendly folk, the venom that sometimes gets directed at roadies reflects very poorly on the superior attitudes that they profess to have.

I cycled on the road on Saturday and was greeted by lots of friendly roadies.

I was in Tokai forest yesterday and saw more than one sullen, surly MTBer.

Is that a valid sample? Can that be interpreted as a trend? I don't think so.

And almost all the roadies I know ride MTB as well. Do they change attitudes along with their bikes?

And on that note if someone wants to ride a Dogma wearing an Ed Hardy outfit for 20 minutes before posing at Caprice for a few hours, they might not be a serious cyclist, but what's it to you? Why do people even care enough to complain about it.

If you think that because you're riding a MTB you're somehow a better person than someone riding a roadbike then you a fool. It's as bad as judging people simply on of the make of car they ride. If you think I'm a pR#&% because just I drive a BMW, then you need serious help or medication.

Noticed the same thing on Saterday, decided to ride Hendrik Potgieter for the first time in yonks on my mtb (becuase I can).

The greeting thing seems to have become out-dated.

I greet regardless, but might miss a few when I am going uphill. :D
