I use GU energy gels during racing, but its getting expensive @ R20p/gel.

I would rather like to buy a 1kg tub of something that works just as well.

Not very clued up on supplements out there.

Basicly I want to know, do you get a powder base that you can mix into your water bottle that has the same instant affect that gels have, without needing to drink like 500ml to get affect.

Whasp Gels are a good alternative. You can purchase 4 different varieties in 600ml bottles, which equates to 12 sachets. You also get a small dispensing bottle with each that holds about 3 sachets for when you race. no wrappers to throw away, no sachet ends to spit out whilst trying to take your gel, neat clean, and the Green Kiwi 100mg caffeine gel packs a punch when you need it.

No, that person will be very rich.

If you want an instant kink and you normally get a buzz from caffiene, then try the Wasp gels with caffiene. they are about R10-13 ea.

WTF do you use gels for Mampara? :)

To the OP, try Powerbars. Depending on how many gels you normally use in a race, a Powerbar may offer a small saving. Subjectively, Powerbars seem to provide a slower release, which makes sense as they are not all carb but have some protein (and I think fat) too.

I bought GU from the herald expo for R15....but yeah, in the shop they sell for R18.

Unless you are using them for training as well, get them at number collection, always cheaper at the expo (I think)

I only use the coffee flavoured caffeinne type, the fruity flavors make me nauseous. The powder you mix in the bottle went the way of the floor at the first waterpoint. Water, gels and organic food like banana or that.

Only gel that settles in my stomach is Hammer gels. Dischem (and other places) sells those nifty big jugs of the stuff. You pour the gel into a smaller plastic bottle and take a sip from that.

Problem solved.

mix honey and blackstrap molasses 3 to 1 ratio add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. put it in one of those small gel bottles and drink when necessary. Tastes bad but not too bad !!! costs a few cents !!! got everything ibn it you need from a gel.

A while ago I found Honey Stinger Gels. They tasted great, were low GI (thanks to the honey) so sustained energy release and they were reasonable at about R15 ea. Then they dissapeared off the market completely. Tried PVM and they seem to be the bomb as far as taste and cost goes. Whasp are reasonable as well but leave a k@k after taste...
