just been thinking, what would be the cheapest/most cost effective way to build up say a 9 kg hardtail?

 

no name carbon frame??

AC wheesl??

SID race??

X9 group??

KCNC parts kit??

 

any ideas??

You'll have to get a lighter wheelset, fork and brakes. Depends on what tyres you have as well.

What's your budget?

hey rock, whats the purpose? also are u starting from scratch?

 

some ideas:

 

going for a single chainring - loose 2 rings, FD, and shifter for free

rim brakes instead of discs are probably lighter per $$$$ but then you need specific wheels and prob loose some style points

then non-tubeless tyres as tubeless is probably the easiest way to shed that last 500g, plus they cheaper than UST but not as tough

 

ultimately it all comes down to what you want to do

Volcan XC Pro through buycycle.co.za. It ia a 1 kg frame for R8000 and they quoted me with X.9 build kit, Sid and American Classic wheels for R21 000. Super bike for the price!

Ali Frames are normally lighter and cheaper than carbon and last longer.

 

 

 

What do you base that on? I'll agree they are cheaper, but the other two I am interested to hear what you based that claim on.

 

I have heard that carbon lasts longer, which is why some aircraft incorporate that rather than the cheaper Alu to save long-term cost and fatigue as carbon does not fatigue the same way Alu does.

Also carbon is definitely lighter than Alu frames - unless you compare a superlight Alu XC to say a DH carbon bike?

ja, I don't think alu is lighter than carbon hey. if it is, then why are the lightest bikes of carbon??

The hope brakes I bought for about R3500. I know that is alot, but I don't think Ill ever buy another brake except hope. THeir great. Had them for over a year now. Never had to bleed them or adjust the caliper too much. Also the rotors don't bend.

The amount of money you are willing to spend will ultimately dictate the weight of your bike.

9kg is going to be expensive, sub 10kg can be done on a budget... The build you mentioned is probably the cheapest with modern parts, alternatively go older SID with v-brakes unless you're looking at new parts only? Biggest change will be lightweight tyres which make a huge difference...

Yes Carbon Should last longer, however get a sharp impact from stone, fall etc. and it will be toast sooner than later. Ali will get a ding or a scratch that is all. Get a chip in Carbon and start considering replacement.

 

OK if you are gonna pussyfoot around on single tracks then go carbon. I have had both. Mongoose Team ali frame with all done 900g lighter than the Mereda Team all done. Mongoose had to be replaced as I reversed my suv over it. Was still going strong after more than 2 years of heavy riding. Then got the Merida, had to have the frame replaced x3. (Ok all done under warranty. Merida is AWSOME!!!!!) but if you paying for everything......

 

Top end Ali frames are lighter than Carbon. just go to any of the manufacturer's sites and check it out.
