Fair is fair. It is the athlete's responsibility to ensure that you stay within the rules of the sport. If it's a banned substance and it is in your blood there shouldn't be any debate around how it got there.

That being said; I'm really disappointed. Yes, I agree with the verdict, but it just means that this year's tour will once again be a less spectacular affair. In 2011 I waited for the fireworks and it just never arrived... will 2012 be the same? (I know, there's more at "steak" here than my entertainment value, but I'm just that selfish!)

Hopefully Bruyneel can work his magic (interpret that as you wish) and get the Schlecks firing! If I have to watch Cadel sitting on a wheel in the mountains again I might just switch to highlights of Graeme Smith batting.

@planetcycling: Contador won 471 point last year. Saxo Bank, 696. That means, without Contador, Saxo won only 225pts!!! Not enough to stay in 1st division!!

Will they, or won't they?

Remember the whole team was built around Contador and the whole team basically "sacrifice" themselves for him to get the results

Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank) gets in one last race before his CAS verdict is announced.

Loss of Contador's points could cost the team

The UCI is set to ask its independent Licence Commission to review Saxo Bank's standing within the WorldTour.

Earlier today Saxo Bank's team leader Alberto Contador was handed a two-year suspension from CAS for testing positive for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour de France.

The suspension means that Saxo Bank stand to lose all of Contador's UCI points during the banned period in which he won numerous races, including the Giro d'Italia. More than two thirds of the teams' points come from Contador (68 percent to be exact) and such a slip in the rankings means that the UCI will ask the team to appear before the Commission in the coming days.

Section 2.15.040.2 of the UCI rules states a ProTour licence may be withdrawn "if the information taken into account in granting the licence or the registration of the UCI ProTeam has changed such that the issue conditions are no longer fulfilled, or the commission considers that the new situation does not justify the issue of a licence or registration". Without Contador's points, Saxo Bank's sporting qualification to be a ProTour team will come under review.

Hours earlier Saxo Bank issued a short press release following the news that its rider Alberto Contador has been handed a two-year suspension by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Danish team signed Contador in 2010, before it was announced that he’d tested positive for clenbuterol at that year’s Tour de France. The team supported the Spaniard and raced him throughout the 2011 season as he picked up numerous wins and UCI points.

"After what has been a very tough situation for our team, today we have finally received the result of the CAS hearing in the case regarding Alberto Contador."

"The result was obviously not, what we had hoped for, but for now our management team is still in the process of reviewing the ruling and the documentation so we can better understand the decision," team manager Bjarne Riis said.

Contador’s ban is back-dated to 2010, and he will be cleared to race by August 5.

so he was found guilty, Andy now the winner...

LA... investigation dropped

"In 2012, in some ways it is one less GC (general classification) rider," Evans said after attending the Laureus awards in London.

"Whether that is an advantage or a disadvantage, it depends.

"Certainly at any grand tour that he lines up in, he (Contador) is normally the man to beat and that is what his record shows.

"So in that regard maybe...(it helps)."

With this year's Tour de France course leaning in favour of strong time trialists, Contador and Evans were considered the main contenders alongside the likes of Bradley Wiggins, Schleck and Denis Menchov.

Bookmakers reacted to Contador's ban by installing Evans as hot favourite to win the 2012 race, with one Australian bookie slashing his odds to $2.50.

Riis took quite a gamble there!

Clearly 'put all his eggs in one basket'

Yeah, Riis hired him for Saxo after he was busted in 2010 while riding for Astana.

Wonder if Riis would come under pressure now for getting it wrong?

Probably not as August is not so far off now...so maybe it was not a bad gamble...

But then if they loose their UCI points that might be another case to call for the resignation of Riis....

Edit: Fat chance....

You reckon, so quickly?

I dont know, I have no doubt Froome is a great talent, but he really has never been a leader in a tour as far as I know. Okay he may have taken over a little from Wiggins last year, but it takes a little more than that to win a tour.

Grumps, just to chirp in, he would have won the Vuelta hands down if it was not for him having to babysit the prima donna of the team.

Saying that, and I truly hope he is not reading this.

But I reckon a bit more Le Tour experience will be required to help him bring home the yellow.

But then again, sheer determination, hunger, willingness to win and good form will make any athlete take top spot on a podium,

SV, Riis resignation? It's his team...

Well I guess he can still resign from his team?

Or the sponsors should resign depart...take your pick.

...Oh, and he was signed before the dope news broke...

OK checked with google and he signed (August 2010) 1 month before the Clen case was announced (Sept 2010)

Yeah, I remember.

Look, he is certainly a great talent, my thought was just it takes a lot of experience to consistently win grand tours. If one thinks back to Cunego when he won the 004 Giro so convincingly, everyone said he is the new Indurain, but, and he admits it, he never had a clue when to attack, when to sit, he was mentored on the road by that experienced old fox Eddie Mazzoleni, he had never really built up any experience.

So, yeah, I think he could be a real threat with a bit more experience and if he can repeat his 2011 Vuelta performance consistently.

Do you know if they will have a public announcement on their decisions.? I havent seen anything, but I imagine its prudent to do so, at the moment there's lots of perceptions which need to be addressed.
