  1. SO true ! Sure, there is a measure of safety when dealing with somebody that has been around a long time and has many positive reviews. But even they started out new .... Bought a bike fork 2 weeks ago from a gent that registered purely to sell this one item. Must admit I looked at the address and thought it is a safe area, THUS I will give it a try .... turns out he is one very nice guy ! As much as we have to be careful, a "new account" is probably not the key decider ... though it does make one look more carefully at the rest of the signs ....
  2. News travels .... https://www.facebook.com/groups/324556679444/permalink/10162606616519445/?app=fbl
  3. Now THAT is something to fall back for, and most certainly a valid reason to pitch in and help. RESPECT to these towers. And thanks to all the helpers. The joy they bring to those FAMILIES, not just the kid in the buggy. Absolute heros !
  4. Sobering thought after the last pages ....
  5. Friday drop bar day .... to the office, with a bit of fun added ....
  6. NEE ... met sulke vriende soos jy .... πŸ˜› Here I am still grappling with the ethics of chipping my bike for the sole purpose of being able to tow @Mamil at 50km/h .....
  7. Buggies ... I always take my turn to help....
  8. Have a look on 4x4Community forum, search for the "wood collector" ... he has been at this game for many many years !!
  9. You and @Mamil need to get your stories straight .... πŸ˜‹
  10. THAT is the problem when seeding works .... you are too fast for the riders at the back to catch you, and if the elastic snaps it is one lonely race .... Watching the tandem video it was interesting to see the very large groups on Smitswinkel, Chappies and Suikerbossie .... and the lines thinning out quickly inbetween ...
  11. Nee magtig man .... I even had a big PINK flag waving at the back for you to hold onto .... not my fault you could not hold on ....
  12. So not exactly the type of DIY job in the ditch towards the end of Smitswinkel .... But yes, a broken or unhooked spring makes sense. Having already lost too much time, I advised him to walk the 1km back to the tech zone.
  13. Question for those that know the SRAM electronic derailures. A gent had a chain snap. It was next to the quick link, removed one more link wrapped the chain and on his way ... Nope ... we got the chain wrap wrong ... check again .... Took a moment before we saw what happened .... The mid idler wheel moved back .... so far back the chain was running from the cassette straight down to the bottom wheel. Checked the locking pin ... fine Just no "pull" on the bottom arm. Is it some function of the electronic mechanism ? Or did something break when the chain let go ?
  14. Arno, @Prince Albert Cycles knows this area best. So for CURRENT information stay in contact with him. When it rains hard, there is often a bit of damage, which takes a few days to repair. So check in just before the trip to make sure. I really enjoyed cycling Meiringspoort. Having done Swartberg from Prince Albert side twice, we booked in between Oudtshoorn and the pass. Then did a day trip over the pass to Prince Albert ... and back ... 112km, 2229m elevation, September with a drizzle of snow on the mountain .... flippen cold going out, very hot on he way back. MEMORABLE ride !!! From Prince Albert I enjoyde the ride out and back on Weltevrede road.
  15. You asked ....
  16. Interesting ideas ..... - Publishing results .... actually publishing the results, then DQ'ing them a few hours later made more of a splash of their sub-3:50 rides. Also it makes it possible to identify the size of the pool that needs addressing. Then again, it is just a software setting, their names could immediately reflect DQ ... no bragging rights, no light on their fast times .... - Ride-park-complete .... As @Me rida my bicycle and various others have stated, the ebike ride is a "fun-ride", it is not meant to be race. Again, the published data makes it possible to identify the size of this pool of riders .... 29 out of 871. Is it really worth 29 pages of comments .... - Battery swopping .... I am all for carrying your own batteries. - Medals .... your still way too generous ..... After the ride I was outside the B&B with my medal around my neck. Lady rider in the B&B across the road ... elite rider fresh back from the prize giving ..."So did you win something to earn that medal?" Okay, we spoke before the race, and there was no malice what she said. (no, she did not know if was on a normal or ebike). But jokes aside, some ebike riders have overcome a load of medical issues and just completing it is one heck of an accomplishment .... so maybe a size 2450 coin battery ? - Shouting .... fully agree !!! Anybody, and EVERYBODY, starting after 7:00 should be banned from shouting "pass right". Riders starting in 4E, then proceeding to shout non-stop as they try to do a sub-3 through the heavy traffic may just be ruder than most ebikers .... wait sorry, we are dissing or discussing ebikers here .... - M-bike ... heck yea !!! The most fun I ever had from Chappies back to town was on R1200R ..... damn, that was FUN ! EDIT - best use italics in a few spots ....
  17. Real question - how can one change the DEFAULT on Strava to load a ride as an ebike ? I have to keep changing it manually after each ride. PS - Finish Time suggests that about 30 of the 871 ebikers did the rest-at-the-promenada thing. Okay, one did a coffee stop at Seattle in Houtbay .... Jokes aside, I was editing a video of a tandem ride. It is so cool to see the interaction between the tandem riders, a sort of brotherhood. Nice chat, then off they go .... 95% of ebikers are exactly the same. Looking at the 109km distance, almost 3% of entrants were on ebikes. It certainly is growing in numbers. Let's hope the spirit of "joining a fun ride" remains the primary goal for the e-bikers.
  18. Thats nothing boet .... 1. The damn tandem beat me to the finish .... 2. I missed my 3:50:01 goal ... 3. Then proceeded 800m up the road, had a shower and waited almost 2 hours for a certain lady from Potch ... but we wont drop any names, nΓͺ @Scary Rider 4. Kyk, toe BRAAI ons !! best use Italics before I get an angry reply from a newly registered accunt ....
  19. Tech hat on .... The SANS regulations that define a "motor vehicle" in SA, also has a section on what is NOT a motor vehicle, i.e.: - A bicycle - A pedal assisted electric bicycle with a motor of no more than 250W and the pedal assist limited to 25km/h Any other "electric bicycle", be it a larger motor or a higher pedal assist limit is a motorcycle, and must be registered as such. This is just a copy of the European regulations. Even Europe is struggling to enforce these rules.
  20. Did you consider doing the virtual option, just to keep ticking on to the 21 ?
  21. Glad you came back for the 22nd ride. Sounds like you had a good ride. Our 73 year young aunt from Potchefstroom did her 23rd ride. Managed 7:15, for an unofficial finish.
  22. Comparing CTCT with the other road events, in terms of ebikes, CTCT put the following in place : 1. Despite your best seeding index, no ebiker gets seeded earlier than 3A. Thus they should not be able to influence the race results, i.e. tow a buddy in the race groups. Jip, those that do slip in at the front is a nightmare for the marchalls. 2. The 3:50 number is explained by CTCT .... and a few minutes to either side their reasoning does make sense. Is it a realistic number ? 871 ebikers doing the 109km. About 30 faster than 3.50. 29 gamed the system and came in 55 seconds later. 93% came in after 3.50. Not to bad at all this 3.50 calc. Heck yes, I would love to get in at 3:51. This is our sub-3 goal ... So, what do the other events do ? Tour de PPA ... ebikers start at the BACK ... Winelands .... each year a different approach. Serms now we start where seeded. Durbie Dash same as Winelands. 99er .... we start as seeded, BUT, they copied the 3:50 NUMBER ... for a shorter and flatter cource. A 3:50 CTCT pace gives you about a 3:15 to 3:20 time for the 99er. I have corresponded with them about this. For 2025 they put a ? mark behind the number, and did not enforce the 3:50. Point being, each organiser is grappling with how to deal with ebikes. Organisers such 99er actually talks with ebikers and are trying to find a win-win solution. For the 93% that co-operates, a small number is adding fuel to the fire..... as with most things in life.
  23. Well said πŸ‘ I also started in 3A, passed @Musashi near UCT. He was doing about 20 km/h up the slight incline. Weekend riders spread all over the road. A few not able to keep a straight line. And somebody does a sub-3 througb that ... This is exactly what the e.bike rules try to prevent, and it explains the intent of these rules clearly.
  24. And not even Friday ...
  25. You do realise I also ride an ebike 🀣 EDIT - Okay so you do 2:50 on an ebike .... IGNORING the rules, then want to get snotty on your first post .... Maybe read the rules before attacking others that actually stick to the rules. Then do some homework on WHY these rules are in place. It has hardly anything to do with "you", but everything to do with influencing race results. And if you think you passed so many SLOW weekend riders at such a speed without causing danger, you really need a wake up call !!! Page up a bit, read about the dad's daughter that was nearly taken out by a racer. NO, you wont get sympathy from me. YOU are bad for the future of ebikes in this sport !!!!
