  1. Trek has a strong marketing campaign at the moment. I sent a link to this Powerfly add to my buddy. He wants another in their range. Buddy tried to get one of their advertised bikes earlier this week ...... authorised dealer in Paarl replied that Trek has no more stock of that bike (THAT DAY's add), "We do have stock, the bikes we have we however bought prior to the special, so we cant sell them at that price" So much for national specials and fancy add campaigns .... My buddy is now waiting for TREK SA's response to the dealers email .....
  2. Not many MTB events counts towards CTCT. Ironically Viens&Views does, and gave me an absurd A1 start in the 99er .... Doing Winelands in January is your best bet to quickly jump up the seeding ladder. 99er is advertised as a seeding event, but it is too close ..... these results are typically not pulled through automatically, or at least it seems this way. It does count towards the the next year's CTCT though. Having started 2nd last in the LAST batch (blerrie outoppie refused to let me start LAST...), I can tell you that it is HECTIC traffic !!! Not sure how I survived until Hospital bend .... The 2nd time round I started around 7:00. That worked really nicely. This year a I fell back to start with a charity group. Nice idea. EXCELLENT vibe in the start shute, and for the first 2km ... then the group split up (it was clearly advertised they would do this). And then I got stuck in heavy traffic until the M3, and again through Simonstown all the way past Smitswinkel ..... No issues with rider behaviour, just slow and heavy traffic .... I will join the charity again this year, but not sure if I am falling back to ride with them (cocky statement as my first seeding ride had 30 minutes of technicals.... so I better have a decent Winelands or I may well seed towards the back ....) In short - if you are aiming for a sub-4, or closer to a sub-3 .... you really want to seed better than a 7:00 start. Just makes life easier to be with faster traffic and hopefully better bike handlers.
  3. Nothing like a stage race to open a newbies eyes to this reality ....
  4. In the 90's I was part of the motorcycle crew. But my first time taking part as a cyclist was the WET one .... Thankfully the late start of a new rider, very last bunch, meant we got drenched past UCT and to the start of the M3. Picking up speed on the downhill towards the M3 By the time we got to Glen Cairn the rain stopped. I stopped in Simonstown for a coffee And then the vibe improved and it turned into a lekka ride.
  5. Set the filters and have a look at the options on the Classifieds of the Bike Hub. When you see anything you might be interested in .... copy a link to this thread and ask advise from the Hubbers. Sorry if this seems the wrong way round, but there is no way to comment "on" the adds, so you have to come back to this thread get feedback ....
  6. This post may get a lot more action in a few months ..... Let's see how all this plays out ....
  7. Really not looking forward to MyWhoosh ..... really hope they sort out their dropped signals before then ....
  8. Welcome to Cape Town. Nothing much came of the severe weather predictions. As an earlier poster noted, only a bit of rain during the last part of the race. Change of season .... weather predictions are pretty useless in the Cape
  9. Well done to the team. Glad for them. SUCKS for us though .... darned exchange rate is not playing nicely with these side shows ....
  10. That is one serious special !!!
  11. @Titan Racing Bikes can best advise you on their options for your needs.
  12. Yes, Winelands is your best bet. 99er is advertised as a seeding event, but each year the same story plays off with it being too late to pull the data through ..... But I do believe it is used in case people make a case for a better seeding, thus it may just help you in this case. If nothing else, one more race to get him used to more riders.
  13. Still or sparkling water ?
  14. Are you riding a road or mountain bike ? (dont want to assume road just because you are working towards CTCT) Some of the local clubs - Cycling Clubs Western Cape This seems like a really lekka bunch of riders (though not right on your doorstep), from the more relaxed to the serious DC riders - The Home of The Outriders Cycling Club
  15. This article seems to echo the sentiment of some previous posts .... Is an arsenal of legal medications and supplements replacing doping in pro cycling? | Cyclingnews

  17. That road from Zone 7 to Philladelphia is totally messed up now .... Surprised the farmers havent put a grader to it yet .... legal se dinges .... that road is downright dangerous at the moment.
  18. Last year I did Bloemslang a couple of times ... gradually picking up speed ... Two weeks later I came down there with a personal best time ... Except .... that first hairpin was totally messed up after the turn ... for a few minutes (at least it felt like minutes) I was doing a stppie is one of those dusty holes .... rear tyre taking its sweet time deciding if it was going to turn me into a scorpion, or just throw me off the side of the trail .... Talk about mind games the next time I did that section .... Lesson learnt .... session a section before letting go of the brakes .... because the trail rating is as reliable as a polititian ...
  19. Perfect example of the maintenance I referred to. The level of maintenance going both ways .... A "natural" red/black trail can be tamed by too much maintenance, as apposed to simply providing a B-line around certain spots. On the flip side, I have seen blue lines with red/black sections simply because of erosion and lack of maintenance. A trail is designed for a market segment, i.e. blue/red trails. And people pay their fee to get their buzz ... all too often it turns into a jouney of descovery .... washed away sections ramping up the rating, and then causing all kind of mind games for the rest of the ride ..... and on the odd occasion you get there just after maintenance and the red is barely green rating .... In an ideal world ... post the intended trail rating. Show which has B-lines. And then be open about maintenance/erosion ....
  20. Peak hour traffic on the trails .... A slow recovery ride after repeated sinus issues through the month ....
  21. Rapid Sports and Anatomic does matching cycling kit for kids and parents 👍
  22. Two pitfalls we experience : 1. The rating does not account for wet or dry. Mostly not an issue. But some trails are on clay types that becomes super slippery when wet .... When a new rider relies on "blue" and encounters "black" unexpectedly, it questions the systems. MAYBE - a notice board at the trail entrance .... "Due to current weather, and trail wear, the rating is elevated from Blue to Red. OR - Normally Blue trail, expect Red/Black in adverse weather conditions. The tricky bit being that a good many trails are built to deal better with rain, and the rating does not change significantly, thus you just know until you have tried the trail in different conditions ... and is this not the exact purpose of a trail rating system ? 2. Maintenance .... or the lack thereof ..... some straight corridors where where highways never mind green has become so eroded that pedal strikes become common place. Once spot that used be a corridor with "the odd tree route", is now washes away to the point that most tree routes are above ground level ... what ever rating they had is no longer applicable. (Protea corridor, Tygerberg club, just as one example). SURE, I actually enjoy this routed section, but also mindful of all the new riders that might find this intimidating. A different issue, and one for which I dont seem to understand the ratings, if it exists. Sometimes to you see three red arrows, noting a dangerous section ahead, typically just a particular feature in an otherwise blue or red trail. Saw this sign at an event, and treated it as such, except it was nothing more than a section of farm road, slightly loose surface at worst. Around the bend one more of these tripple red arrows, but clearly just the same farm road. After the third bend it became apparent what was happening ... we climbed to the top using single tracks, and was now simple speeding down a road .... and overheating the brakes !! My brakes eventually glazed over, bike speeding up, and I ended in the medics tent for a few hours ... for what was no more than one enormously long very steep downhill. And here I thought the tripple red arrow was just "for an obstacle". In a case like that a printed board stating "steep drop next 3km" might have been more appropriate.
  23. So many tandems out at the CTCT. I do know I have slowed down a couple of times to encourage the kids on the tandems. Somehow only have these two pics of younger riders on the back .... These two ladies were ENJOYING their ride, and absolutely came flying down this section ..... Sorry, not kids, but the way they were laughing out loud reminds of kids having fun. @BuffsVintageBikes knows a gent that has done a lap or two on a tandem (now if ever there was an understatement) ..... pretty sure Mark might still know where to get hold of a tandem .....
  24. This is the sad reality in most cases ....
  25. Winelands is another nice training opportunity, must be worth a bit towards sub-3 ....
