  1. Yep I did a combo injury in the space of a week with it. Was doing some practise runs on the MX bike and missed a rhythm section landing into the face of a double completely taking the hit of the force in my left knee. Guessing I popped one or possibly both cruciate ligaments with that. Hobbled with a knee the size of a balloon for 4 days icing it into touch and finally getting it to recover in size. Was young and dumb, so didn't bother going to have it checked out and simply strapped it up for going to play an indoor hockey match that weekend and 5 minutes into the game tried to swerve the keeper and managed to completely have the knee buckled sideways. Wasn't pretty. Lucky to still have the lower part of my leg! Had to have the knee pretty much redone and start rehab. Cycling was the main therapy for exercise once I could get enough knee bend back to do a pedal stroke after wearing a leg brace that controls the amount of angle as per the rate of improvement. Took quite a while to get the leg back to 'normal' use. Gave up on running at that time. Also had to give up any lateral movement sports that place excessive force on the knee and been mostly surfing and cycling over the years enjoying the use I do have. It really hasn't bothered me too much and although I was told I have arthritis in the knee 20 years ago, I'm mostly cool to keep going! (Yep, I tend to eject when I go up for floaters while surfing and I can see it's gonna be a hard landing, rather than put the knees through that kinda thing unnecessarily. I manage it well and it really has not kept me from doing anything if I take the time to train up for it.) It is a struggle to listen to the body when the mind wants to push on, but I guess we all reach that breaking point where it makes no sense to keep going as the long term damage is very real and conscious after you've had to go through rehab to get something fully functional at some point in your history. DON'T EVER TAKE YOUR HEALTH OR ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE EVENTS FOR GRANTED!
  2. I'm running for almost 2 years now after not running for 20 years. I have however had ligament repair done on my left knee back in '91 and all the cartilage and meniscus has been scrapped on that, so I've had to start super slowly to get the knee to feel comfy. I'm mostly good but have to be so careful at running more than 3 times a week and then adding extra distance as the knee flares up and then swells if I push it too much. Think I'll look to keep the distances shorter and work towards getting 4 -5 runs in rather and make up the mileage that way. Have had to heavily change my biomechanics just to get into what I've currently been able to do. Higher cadence, shorter stride and avoiding heel strike has been a lifesaver to just being able to run 3 times a week and feel OK. Looking to increase the strength work and try make time to get back on the bike too, as the combination seems to keep the knee the most stable! It's quite slow going to get improvement and I'd rather not mess up the knee, as than I literally cannot surf, when it gets too swollen and there's no power to press off when I try do some turns! The running is to stay in shape, the surfing is to feed my soul!
  3. OK, I'll come out and say it. I've made my peace that Comrades is possibly too much of a commitment to training to get my knee prepped for doing that kind of distance! Think I'll be sticking to a half and shorter from this point as my knees just hate when I start adding real mileage! (That then affects the surfing and if I really have to choose, the surfing always wins!) I'll tip my hat to you chaps who are able to do the distance! My FIL (****it list, as opposed to a bucket list...) has far too many surfing related items to check, to invest the necessary sacrifices to get a Comrades ticked off too. So, now the challenge becomes to do a 5K in under 20 minutes. Need to shave 2 minutes off my PB to get there. Speedwork here I come! Hopefully get a OMTOM half entry through the ballot setup and aim to run a half PB there. Did Gun Run this past weekend and although I ran a 1:55 PB, I spectacularly dropped off the pace after the knees were tender and nursed myself home. Going through the first 13kays I was on a 1:45ish pace. I gotta admit that I get so surprised at the size and shape of some of the people who run fast times! Looking at them, you would not think they are good for doing the mileage at the pace they do and yet they just keep motoring along! Very impressive to see! Anyway, just huge kudos to all you guys that will keep pushing through to the Comrades! Massive respect to you just for having the grit to keep going through the training et al!
  4. I am so tempted to do this, just to scout out all the surf spot potential along that stretch!!!!
  5. The room for improvement is fairly steep and then flattening out on a curve, just as your numbers suggest. The closer you are to being a beginner the greater your gains could be, but that is heavily oversimplifying things! It really is unique to each person and what their history is, ATTACHED to what their specific goals are! This is where the coach really adds the value. They assist you throughout the whole process. Baseline tests are not questionnaires. These are proper tests that give valid and current fitness scores! Training is then adapted to explicitly use these values to move your program forward against the short, medium and long term goals correctly with ongoing monitoring of these values using the level of interaction you take up! If you want more detail than that I suggest chatting directly to the OP and the coaching crew who have participated.
  6. If you answer honestly what is the maximum amount of time you could commit to a training program per week, without compromising on a necessary sleeping schedule that ensures you still get the required amount of rest to recover properly? How many additional hours can you take from other activities you currently do and switch these to training? e.g Give up time on the couch in front of the box. What are no go stuff? e.g Drop a child off at school in the morning and do a pick up in the afternoon. The point is moving towards a place where you are using up all that you can allocate to training and then seeing no improvement. That is the perfect place for someone like you to start engaging with a coach so that the time you are investing in training will reap the greatest rewards. For others, their needs for coaching may be different. They may need that to simply establish a training program and because of their goals that is enough. Are you getting where I'm going with this?
  7. If you follow it to a T, it's near impossible to have no gains! That aside though, if the improvements are not meeting the expectation, then the coach re-evaluates and taps into his network of knowledge to find the most correct method of dealing with the issue at hand, so that the expected improvements are achieved. When you take up a coach, you are letting all the science behind how to tune your program and why to perform certain activities to a specific intensity and frequency, along with all your nutritional and recovery components come together without you having to radically upskill yourself in any of these complex areas collectively. You get to draw on all of their resources and they typically have a team of subject matter experts to draw from. You simply cannot compete against that volume of knowledge on your own!
  8. Stricker, the rationale behind your argument does not make sense. If you apply your argument to anyone providing any service and ask what percentage improvement you get, you will be told that if you use the advice and knowledge that you will be empowered by from taking up their service only then will you see the real benefits. It means that you have someone to be accountable to, holding you to the goals that you have discussed after having baseline tests done to work out what is realistic given your own unique set of lifestyle \ time commitments, then fine tuning a performance based program entirely specific to where you are and what goals you have. The top line package will obviously have a significant amount of interaction to make the process even easier, whilst the more budget options will rely on you to be more self sufficient. Either way you have someone in your corner, ensuring you stay on your program and giving you feedback through monitoring your scores on whether you are seeing the expected improvements or whether something is going wrong somewhere and then tweeking things to avoid you reaching a plateau. It's really not more convoluted and complicated than that.
  9. Stricker, quick question if you don't mind please. How many hours of training are you currently committed to doing a week? A weekly average for the past 2 months will be rad please sir!
  10. A tune that I am playing quite a bit lately. Find this one so haunting and raw!

  15. Found the Strava group! You guys put in some big mileage! Will use that for some kick in the @ss to train more! Got GunRun half coming next month, then focus on running a 5K PB before the end of the year, get my pace up and see how I feel about longer races after that. Not sure of what running aspirations I have for now. (Knees still sore after Sunday...)
  16. Place-marker for Friday....
  17. Hehe! Nice to see I got 300 VAR points for Cape Town Marathon yesterday, after I picked up a knee issue and had to walk the last 10 clicks to the finish.... (300 points = 60+mins at 70%)
  18. Shot for the kind words chaps! It really has put into perspective for me, the challenge that is the Comrades!
  19. Enjoy the whole process Scott! It really is a different type of animal. Unlike cycling, there is really nowhere to hide or downhills to freewheel on to try and recover. I enjoyed the mental challenge of this as much as the physical, seeing as it was a foray into the unknown for me! I'll be watching for your report back!
  20. First Marathon done and dusted yesterday at the Sanlam CTM... Wasn't pretty, was super under prepared after getting caught up with tackling a post grad and not making time for any long runs but now I no longer need to wonder what it's like to go that far in some running shoes! Useful experience and lined up knowing it was going to be a day for survival rather than pacing to a time. Did the first half in 2:08, feeling comfy all the way, picked up some niggles shortly thereafter and struggled home in 5:35. Was a very humbling day out and much respect to you chaps who can keep the afterburners firing for so long! Will have to really rethink how to schedule my training better around my other commitments!

More off topic on this thread... Before Monster Energy Cup there is... MXoN is the last weekend this month which should also prove the year long head to head of riders who race in different championships all coming together at one event! Gonna be an interesting bit of MX in Italy and the track is looking in grand form! Team lists: http://www.mxgp.com/news/official-entry-lists-monster-energy-fim-motocross-nations Plus there's the Supercross effort in Europe on the 8th of October at some new German based indoor venue. Dungey, Barcia, Anderson, Osborne and Musquin will be the US based notables competing against Gajser, Herlings, Febvre, Nagl and co. Info here: http://www.mxgp.com/tracks/veltins-arena K-Roc to HRC is an interesting move and certainly something that Honda is using to go all in for the 2017 Champs! Wonder how quickly Gajser will come to grips with the US setup if he does go across and having both of these riders under the HRC tent will be SUPER interesting! Honda fans will have a real chance to be amped for next year! Trey is possibly the unluckiest of riders in the modern era with the injuries and how some of these have been picked up through his campaigns. Wonder how working at the Baker factory will change his approach and whether he'll be able to avoid some of the situations he has found himself in when he has got injured in the past! When he's fit he has the speed! I'm mostly keen to see how Cooper Webb is going to handle not being the big fish in the pond any longer! Whether he can continue using his anger at being overtaken to press forward and attempt to ride away from the likes of K-Roc, ET and Dungey. I'm mostly looking forward to him and Bam Bam having their first on track encounter to see what the result of that is! Should be an EPIC year if the main contenders can stay healthy through the season! Rooting for Roczen but doubt he will have another runaway season!
  23. The problem with cycle commuting is that it requires more than just bike lanes. Until the city and all the other involved people look at all of the requirements to make it work, you wont get people to use it. To get people on bikes to go to work they need to be: - People who have no requirement to be mobile during business hours - People who do not have to transport any heavy equipment with them in order to perform their job function - People who are not involved in school runs or other children related activities Now for the Infrastructure needs which typically is provided by private business: - Somewhere safe that the users can park and lock up their bikes - Proper shower facilities with lockers for storing clothing and washing up items - A way for staff to get benefits from using these. For example, give up a parking bay and get a share of that additional monthly spend back in salary. Attitude changes are also required: People who commute need to start being more open to looking out for their fellow cycling commuters and consider bike bus options. Safety in numbers is a real thing and yet there are so few ways to achieve this. Anyone else with other thoughts? Cheers Jay
