  1. Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a place to sell Lego, or is gumtree the best bet?

I bought a big set to keep me occupied during lockdown, but a bit over it again.

    Thanks!

  2. Our weekend ride group is usually three ladies and myself, but they are great to ride with .... and can flipping rock a DH decent.

Maybe I need to hit you up then for when you guys go riding again, after world fun ride champs of course.  My mountain biking skills have taken a nose dive with all the road cycling I've been doing lately

  3. Not trying to be funny here ... would just riding with a couple of guys not give you an opportunity to at least chat to guys informally and help you to get over the heebie jeebies ... you would then also have the opportunity of refining your "crazy radar" for when you are feeling more open to relationships?

That makes sense, I think part of the heebie jeebies comes in with the fact of how to meet guys...  And the only thing that comes easily to mind is online dating, and the idea of sifting through garbage/lies/dick pics to get to some gem is very off-putting

  4. I don't think there's a right answer for this...

me, after 6 months-ish. Colleague of mine, 2 weeks. Depends entirely on you.

    'Sup Myles!

I was just wondering because I want to meet people again, but the thought of dating is giving me the heebie jeebies

  5. My opinion is based on if a traffic light takes 3 seconds to change from yellow to red, and you are travelling at 70km/h (19,4m/s) then you have at least 60 meters to brake before you reach the lights( or 40m if your reaction is a bit longer) enough time to slow down to a safer speed where you can react if a car comes across the road.

So this is where that all important transportation engineering I've been touting comes in to play.

The formula/concept is stopping sight distance.  When you see an obstacle, you don't immediately stop, you see the obstacle, you need to comprehend it, and then only will you start applying brakes.

The average reaction time used is 2.5 seconds - some people are obviously faster.  So for a car travelling at 70km/hr, the distance is 104m

  6. so to Cap and Geronimo, I agree with you on all accounts.  But there is a reason why there is a faction in engineering called Transportation Engineering.  People are inherently stupid in general and there are general guidelines set forth for road users to make informed decisions when approaching an intersection or any other geometric designs that are prevalent in today's road infrastructure.

If these guidelines aren't followed, then accidents can and will happen.

  7. That section of the road looks like a typical T-junction.  I've been guilty of running the red light there because I was going too fast to brake and didn't realise there's a road to the left as well.  And I have disk brakes.

I checked google maps and there is signage up showing a full intersection, but it's relatively far from the intersection itself, so not easy to make an informed decision while in a car, nevermind on a bike that doesn't always look for signage that far ahead.

The driveway is hidden by a bush, so the sight distance is also not on par with transportation engineering typical guidelines.  Not only should the driver be able to see conflicting traffic, but the traffic crossing the intersection should also be able to note a vehicle.

It was clearly an accident that could have happened to anyone.  But I would like to hope that the intersection itself would be improved to have adequate signage and road markings in place that everyone is aware of the hidden drive.

  8. Thanks for the reply.

I swim 3-4 times per week, usually around 30-45 mins per session.

Constantly exhaling (the drills I am doing is to get used to constantly exhaling, while staying relaxed in the water)

I am breathing every second stroke

I only started swimming laps in July.

Is this something you get used to over time (i.e. you gain fitness in the water), or will I have that "a-ha!" moment once I get it right and be able to swim for long periods of time without losing my breath?

It's kind of an a-ha moment tbh.  You're obviously putting in the time in the pool, so should be fine by now or at least seeing big improvements.

    some things to try:

    - slow down (like david said), if you're bashing the water your muscles use a lot of oxygen.

    - try only using a pull buoy, this will help you focus on your stroke and your leg muscles are larger so use more oxygen

    - try to include some laps where you breath every 3rd or 4th stroke, this will force you to exhale more slowly, which I think might be your actual problem, ie you're breathing too much

  9. So another noob question here

    Swimming...

I am getting much better wrt my technique and my breathing, especially since I started doing drills to get comfortable in the water and swim without constantly being out of breath and feeling like I am drowning. However, still can't swim more than 4 laps continuous without having to stop for a few seconds at least to catch my breath. I am sure a bunch of you have had the same problem and how long will it take for me to start getting comfortable enough in the water to swim upward op 1000m without stopping?

My hubby really only just started swimming laps in June, and he's up to do 800m open water without any issues only within the last month.

A few questions for you, how often are you swimming, are you constantly exhaling and taking inhalations?  Are you breathing every second stroke only or are you trying to breath every 3rd or 4th stroke?

  10. I have not been following Sanders but did some checking and I am quite surprised that he is self coached. He seems to mess around a lot with diet, setup and the whole lone wolf thing which I think is hindering him. He is so talented just think what he would do with a coach like Brett Sutton.

We were actually discussing it a couple of weeks ago, the consensus was that it seems to work for him, and that training with a coach may actually hinder his performance.  Ie, his running style, a coach may try to change it, but it somehow works for him, even though it's the most uncomfortable looking gait.  He has a very unique story overall, and I think he prefers marching to the beat of his own drum.

His nutrition plan is absolutely nuts, but he filmed himself doing a practice run and he seemed to handle everything okay.  So will see what race day brings.

  11. I'm in the same boat and will be closing the CC account when back in JHB in November. Tired of paying R150 odd per month for nothing. The card won't work in Aus as they can only activate roaming on it for six months. That ended a long time ago.

Planning on dropping to the lowest account as well to further minimise monthly costs. Another thing I may try is online booking for a driver license. Picking up will be an issue but worth trying it. I wonder what JMPD etc. will think of an Aus driver license as my ZA license has expired.

Even if your license is expired, as long as you have one they weren't interested in our other licenses.  And then to pick up we just gave a letter giving permission to a family member to collect.  If you're planning on driving while in SA then you can get the temporary license (when you're renewing your old one) - just need to bring in a photo, and that's valid for 6 months.

  12. So Disylizzy + hubby are racing at this weekend’s Cape Ultra races... anyone else?

Eddie_V are you racing as well?

Got the registration email this morning and butterflies are already starting!  Not my first rodeo, but haven't raced in years.
