  1. Fellow mechanical engineer here, massive shimano fanboy and there are few things that get me worked up as the cheap SRAM stuff do. But with all my Shimano bias I do agree with you. The thru axle will pull everything into flush positions against the hub, so the derailleur should be in the same position every time in reference to the cassette and hub. It will eat the play up in the frame. or am I missing something here?
  2. Shot thank you, I’ll probably go for it
  3. I realized I have a cassette and upside tandem that don’t need a rim. BUT my sister in law is looking to a solution like that, if you have a through axle wheel with 10speed cassette laying around then that would be amazing. She has one of those 27.5 merida big seven lite mountain bikes. I’ll send you DM if so
  4. now that looks like a few dream monstercross gravel bikes ready to be built
  5. Haha you have my attention, does it involve putting a 26er rim on my road bike?
  6. Haha dangit that would have been amazing, do you have a rough idea how long those trainer specific tires last? As long as a normal tire or way longer ? Those Tacx ones are quite expensive but if it lasts then it’s worth it
  7. Haha ok road bike
  8. Hi Everyone, I have a vintage Elite trainer that I use, but I want to start using a roller specific tyre. It eats my gatorskins for breakfast. Any recommendations and what to look out for?
  9. Asking for a friend, where could one see this pic?
  10. Ah the days of me sitting in front of the pc at 12:57 just refreshing the entry page to make sure I get to enter in time. Slow internet? Sorry buddy no entry for you. Now you get to see how your December training goes before deciding to enter.
  11. Wow I didn’t even know you got some of those older bikes with that much space for bigger Tyres . I put on 25mm tires on my vintage steed and there is probably just enough space for a hair between the tires and the brakes
  12. Thanks, a 105 version would be really cool for those who has an unfounded bias towards shimano😅
  13. @Titan Racing Bikes will you guys be bringing out a Valerian with shimano 105 hydraulic group set? What is the maximum tyre clearance on those bikes?
  14. I would pay money to see this, that would be insane.
  15. I started in group 1C, what a lekker ride it was. Realized early that we will probably not do a sub 3 so I just enjoyed the ride. Made it over hospital bend without tapping into the zone 5 tanks, can't say the same for Edinburgh Drive but was pleasantly surprised to see I was at the pointy end of the group up the hill. Pretty uneventful up until the foot of the Smitswinkel climb, I dropped my chain and starting falling back. Luckily the group was so big from catching the remnants of group A and B so I never lost touch of the group. I starting clawing myself back up the group, and as I was about to touch the front end of the group, they upped the pace over the crest. Needless to say I was already on the limit and couldn't follow. Dropped back and what was suppose to be free speed down the M65 I had to work the broken legs to latch onto the group again, luckily with the help of some faster guys. Somehow I recovered and could enjoy the rest of the ride. I had the legs to push up Chappies and Suikerbossie, first time in many years I actually enjoyed it up the climbs. Finished with a time of 3:07, 6min off my PB but I am 12kg heavier than my PB version so pretty chuffed. Biggest win for me was being able to finish strong and sprint for the line. Probably a testament of klapping a guu every 30min. First time trying it and somehow the nutrition just worked out. Normally I finish with nothing in the tank. Overall great ride and amazing weather with some lekker chats along the way
  16. Results are out. I started in group 1C but I see the results said I started in 1D, anyone else move up a group?
  17. Hey man, where did you get those 27.5 rims? I’m interested in doing something similar with long reach brakes?😃
  18. I must say, then even more impressive for Beers to win. I’m always shocked to see such a unit of a guy winning these races. He should probably help us out at Eskom with all those watts.
  19. I can’t add anything to all the tips given, but maybe just some of the rides I experienced with my wife. She grew up cycling on the back of a Tandem with her dad and I grew up racing both MTB and road. The first ride together on the Tandem we cycled from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek and back. That was when we were still dating. Me never cycling on a tandem before thought that if I’m not putting force down on the pedals 100% of the time then she would be taking up the effort. Well let’s just say I haven’t ever cramped so much as I did on that day, it is really something to figure out how you gauge your effort together. But you learn, As a wedding gift to ourselves we bought a MTB tandem. Now that is fun, makes those trails a bit more challenging but so rewarding. I took my wife down firehut in Jonkershoek, and I just decided to bomb the trail without letting my wife know what’s happening, she wasn’t happy at all😅. I obviously learned to communicate better after that day, You don’t have to talk much on a tandem but yet you feel like you’ve really connected after a ride . Such great fun
  20. I started in group B and realized very quickly I didn’t have the legs. Felt off with the urge to nap and got dropped. At around the 35km mark I decided to turn around and call it a day, but after some internal dialogue, which contained some swearing, I pulled up my granny panties and joined the C group. Enjoyed it for most of the ride but paid for it the last 12 km, started peddling squares followed by a craving for coco pops. Was pulled home by Craig I think, not his race either. Me sitting behind Mr KTM The location of the internal dialogue
  21. I had the unfortunate privilege this morning of riding behind an older gentleman in his see through Ciovita Bib. We should probably add our bibs to the Strava equipment so that we can track the KMs on them before they become translucent 😅.
  22. Winelands cycle race I had the hardest bonk of my life after I forgot my bottles at home.
  23. Rather use this link http://results.racetec.co.za/riderseeding.aspx I compared the two and they do say they have used different events as a seeding but the racetec one seems more accurate. I'm seeded 1C so far but aiming to improve it in the tour de PPA.
  24. I’m keen to climb onto that bus 🚌
