I think all the points mentioned ( I mentioned in my post as well) that if your are riding at these hours of day or night and safety is important, stop and proceed when safe to do so. That is the society we live in that lets us do so. But a group of 20-30 riders all going thru because time is against them, different story!! We do not hold our future in our hands, that is to be decided by the ALMIGHTY, but being a model citizen and adhering to the rules that are there to protect us is, and we have to not think of ourselves, but what example are we setting for our children and / or grand children!!

Common sense for me must prevail!!! I will, from now on refuse to stop at a red light even during the day because common sense tells me it is unsafe to stop because the woman behind me in her Range Rover talking on her cell phone is not concentrating and i am scared she might run into me!!!!

No, that's why this debate is raging. We are classed with pedestrians as far as safety goes, but definately considered a motor vehicle. A few years back (ok, a good few) we cyclists had to pay license fees. This was scrapped because of logistics reasons. Maybe this should come back. Pay license fees get a number plate and then we see who goes thru red lights!

This is my view. If you are alone at 5 am in the morning on route to meet a bunch on the corner, Stop at a red light and if it is safe proceed, but come to a complete stop first. If you are an A bunch group riding at 5am (20-30 riders) then it is NOT a safety issue. PLEASE STOP AND ADHERE THE RULES OF THE ROAD. Whats the rush, it's a training ride. If you have to get to work on time ride earlier. There is simply no excuse!!!
