  1. I get sad (and happy) just looking at these...
  2. [hi-jack on] I've been meaning to pop in here for the past 20 minutes (been sorting out another thread), thinking this was another Hub-political-thread about to go south... Thought it was "ANC wheels going click click click..." Good luck sorting it out. [hi-jack off]
  3. Well played, Sir!
  4. Gents and ladies. Ladies and Gents. There has always been a welcomed element of contrarian views in this thread. But please keep things civil. By all means, get your point across, but without introducing personal jabs - 158 pages into this thread, with hardly a report - lets not start that now! I have hidden a post made a bit earlier, that was reported twice. I politely request that you reconsider how you said what you did.
  5. Did the same yesterday - after the wife's nagging about lifting our Vitality points, finally got through to me! I was also nailed on the bad cholesterol score (6.5) - fruit and veg intake - not enough wholegrain products etc. - and because I didn't have my blood pressure stats at hand (despite selecting "OK" - which it has always been)... That and my lack of weekly exercise. They don't appear to have an option for "I was exercising all the time, but then the lumbar radiculopathy I have been diagnosed with mid-year, put a bit of a spanner in the works..." Now the wife says I was too bloody honest. Regardless - point remains that one of our biggest medical-aid companies is still quite set in its ways when it comes down to [pretty-much] the core foundation of its patients' health... I am increasingly reminded of a seminar I attended several weeks back - where in a completely non-health related discussion - a senior Professor from one of this country's leading Faculty of Health Sciences, said: "As we constantly tell our students - 50% of what we are teaching you is bad science. And the difficulty is, you won't know which 50% of it is the bad part..." That raised a few eyebrows. He qualified it by explaining how they are constantly trying to drive home the point, to their students, that medical/health science is constantly evolving... and that what they are being taught at University, might be accepted in the here-and-the-now - but that a fair amount of it is likely to be challenged, or is currently being challenged, as new evidence comes to light. And how MD's are truly expected to remain life-long students etc. etc.. Loosely translated: Everything you know is wrong. [caveat emptor:] The same logic would obviously apply to LCHF.... 40(?) years from now, health-science students might be told about how the whole world was eventually led to believe that LCHF was the answer to the problems associated with LFHC... and how that's all wrong - How the real answer is.... stomach micro-organisms... and kelp. And unicorn hair.
  6. What +1
  7. Seriously cool. Like Bill Murray cool.
  8. Commiserations...
  9. Planning my mid-life crisis already!
  10. I'll see what she has to say. She has a strong (and still active) academic background, so things might have changed. The wife mentioned to her that I was starting with LCHF last year, and she apparently didn't seem too enthusiastic. But plenty can happen in a year - so maybe she has some different thoughts now... It will be interesting, regardless... Having looked at them side-by-side again - I'm feeling slightly better. [Which simply means my mind is beginning to choose the belief that I want to believe, and is already convincing myself to ignore any contrary indicators. Self-propagandisation. Beautiful.]
  11. Mine were pretty bad to start off with, as is clear:
  12. So apologies for just putting this out there... But took a bit of a knock of late... Had blood-tests done a month in, September last year, and the same test last week... Not such pretty reading, unfortunately. Whereas I have never felt better - going to have fun and games explaining this to the wife and GP, who are anything but convinced about LCHF... TC has climbed, as was to be expected... HDL has climbed - which is great... but LDL took a bigger jump - I guess that is obviously also to be expected (particle size unknowns aside)... Triglycerides have unfortunately also climbed... I was hoping that would go the other way... Not a happy chappy at the moment. Somebody cheer me up.
  13. Pinned the topic - enjoy!
  14. Had mine torn many years ago... Not stating this with any sort of certainty - but was "told-off" in a big way by my physio, for waiting a few months before getting it seen to - made matters worse. She said it's one of the more "difficult" areas to work on, it being quite deep in the tissue - if that makes any kind of sense - so the earlier it can be worked on, the better... I also still battle a bit in the cold, but it was pretty much sorted eventually, so reckon you have nothing to lose getting it checked out properly...
  15. Anyone else wondering how those cars got there?
  16. Where oh where did you get hold of those brakes, or were they part of the original bike? She's a beaut, btw!
  17. Hello? What's the back-story on this then?
  18. Hello All. I've locked this thread. Please let things be tonight. If things are going to go the way it has been suggested, then none of this is necessary - neither can it help. Please let it be - get a good night's rest, and let's see how we are all feeling in the AM. Regards, Rod
  19. In my student days, played barman for a while at a new pub that opened up in town. Owners were ok - but they brought along a supreme tjop for a manager. Real gung-ho character, always relaying these stories about glory-days gone past, of his being called in to "clean-up" the various establishments he would be asked to start managing... Had the weekend off, and on the Tuesday, came in to find much merriment and mirth doing the rounds, about how the Tonsil "sorted out" his 1st client on the Saturday night... Story goes he had the dude outside, pushed him up against the wall, things got ugly, and then he pulled out his "Man-Down" pepper spray [you know, the 'special kind' that he organised through his connections in the Special Forces], and proceeded to spray the target in the face. The unwilling back-up to the whole event, my mate who was on duty, says he could see everything perfectly on account of all of this happening under one of the outside lights... On spraying him - a perfect stream of pepper spray hit the customer on the forehead, and then rebounded perfectly in another stream, straight into the eye of the Tonsil... He went down screaming like a girl. The other dude wanted to get a few in, but the screams were so pathetic and childish, that he just started laughing, along with the then no-insignificant crowd that had gathered... The Tonsil shipped out that week, never to be seen again.
  20. I'm still battling to deal with this all, to be honest. Have been fighting a chest infection since just before I heard - so haven't been able to get on to the bike, or join any of the memorial rides... Think that would've helped me, somehow... See there was was announcement about a memorial service at the NG Moeder Gemeente in Stellenbosch next Thursday. I will not miss this. It is just so sad. Thanks for the video links, peeps.
  21. With 42 pages - apologies if this has been discussed... The Nespresso U came with the Aeroccino frother. Been using it since Xmas - nothing excessive. Yesterday, it started slipping in its primary role of frothing... All appears to be working as it should, but as soon as you pop up the lid, the (warmed) milk is virtually "flat". I noticed it wasn't filling the chamber to just underneath the lid like it used to, and cannot get it to froth like it did initially... Anyone else notice a difference between milk bottles - i.e. could it be a particular bottle of milk that is the problem? Reason I ask is that the previous bottle - a different brand to the Woolies Aryshire(?) we usually buy - made a very "thick" froth... So is it possible that the problem lies there - or could it only be the Aeroccino? Obviously, had I remembered to buy more milk on the way home today, I would not be asking this question...
  22. I used them. XT pedals. Ordered them accidentally. No problems. Have a look - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mobile/MobileModels.aspx?ModelID=10969 I'm not suggesting you have to use them if you're into jumping. I certainly don't dirtjump. OP wants something that releases easier. These certainly do. [edit: Shouldn't have said they were made specifically for dirt-jumping - rather, that some dirtjumpers use them, regardless of whether or not that is a good idea]
  23. Depending on what cleat system you use, you can adjust the tension required to release your foot. Shimano also make cleats specifically for jump-bikes, that release even easier than the standard ones... Not that you need to go that route, as has been explained - practice and a few falls will see your problems disappear - but just explaining that there are plenty of options.
