  2. [Hi-jack on] Hey SB - I bought two. I stopped reading the 2nd one (about 220 pages) "Why we get fat and what to do about it" [or something], because it really lives up to how he intended it - which was a summary, easy-read of the big, scientific one he wrote first. It's a good read - but I became annoyed at not being able to follow up on his sources, as there is little to no referencing. I wanted to be able to make more of a call on how creditable his assertions were. So I started on the 1st one - "Good Carbs, Bad Carbs." It's about 800 odd pages on the Ipad, of which more than 300 are endnotes/references. To be honest, it's still not referenced (at least not in the first few hundred pages) as what an academic paper would be - but then again, I'd probably not understand half of it in any event) - but it does make an effort to provide more background of the underlying sources and research, which is obviously preferable. It's fascinating reading - and for what it's worth, if even half of it is true - then we've all been led down the garden path by very flaky medical "science"! [hi-jack off]
  3. I didn't aim my response directly at you - simply tried to make the point of how interesting it is that two Hubbers quoting the same website, can have differing views on what a possible message/interpretation is. Which adds to what many are saying - how none of this is really "simple".
  4. That makes complete sense - and it's kind of logical, if you think about how amazing our bodies are... Ties in with what was said about the insulin release - the research suggests (but then again - doesn't it only always suggest ) that our bodies would release insulin to convert to fat when it perceived what was being eaten as a [for lack of a better word] luxury... in other words - something outside what the body would consider normal, or necessary, for your particular genetic disposition.. In short - many/some of us are not geared up for carbs - eat too much of it, insulin is released (to convert to fat for the coming "hard" winter etc)...
  5. Interesting this - only because I came to exactly the opposite conclusion on reading the above [DietDoctor.com / LCHF]... Had a good look at the comments and posts on the website, and then went out an bought Taubes' book, that Noakes referred to... It's quite hefty - and still working my way through it. Anyways - one of the experts on the DietDoctor site, in an interview with the good Dr., had a chat about the effects of insulin, and how it is now being studied in much more detail in regards to its possible impact on diabetes.... I'm over-simplifying now, and don't quote me on this (go check it out yourself), but in one part - he explains it as follows: Your body needs XX amount of calories per day. If you only consume that exact XX amount, you will neither lose weight, nor gain weight. However, assume you consume foodstuff A. This triggers the release of insulin. Your body reacts, and immediately converts %Y of that calorie intake to FAT, before it becomes accessible to your body as energy. Therefore, your body then doesn't get the full XX amount of calories, but receives XX - Y... And so - you get hungry again, because you still haven't taken in the required XX amount of calories. So you eat again - more of foodstuff A - which again converts %Y to fat - which leaves you hungry again, since you've still not reached your XX quota - so you eat again.... etc. etc. It's obviously much more complicated than the above, and depends on the individual and whether or not they are insulin resistant and the like - but they are pretty clear on the fact that the old calorie in - calories expended dictum is part of the problem... It's what has given rise to people virtually starving themselves, but still not losing weight - because the focus is on what is consumed, rather than on what happens to the calories that are consumed... Not making any sort of definitive statement by the above - just throwing it out there... It's certainly caused me to question much of the traditional, and long-held advice that most of us have received over the periods of our lifetimes...

  20. Based on what I know now, I would have managed the Black Routes I reckon - more so those designated as "flow" trails, rather than the "technical" (read serious roots/rocks)... But with time being limited, I didn't want to rush in to Black, and then that towards the end of my runs, when I was beginning to tire... DH'ng requires a completely different type of fitness... Well - d'oh - but for a first-timer, it caught me a bit... You obviously hardly ever sit down... and given that I wasn't exactly relaxed, you get the "claw" from gripping those bars... It just nails you on a completely different level - hardly any cardio - but muscle fitness, if that makes any sense... I never had nearly enough time to do any of the above properly... At the time, I was annoyed with myself for not having spent both days in the Park - and I was bummed that it rained so heavily the Sunday morning, effectively taking half a day out of my riding... But now - I'm glad I experienced the XC wood-riding in the lake area - put plenty of things into perspective for me... Having said that - when I go back, it will be straight to the Bike Park...

  22. Halfway up... Garbanzo was always going to be too technical for me, given the limited amount of time I had... It's firmly on my bucket list, for the next visit... This is me on the main landing area at the bottom of the Garbanzo Zone lift - the jump-in point for most of the Whistler MBP trails... And no - I didn't jump-in to any of the double-black-diamond routes behind me, I took the blues just off to the left... Not exactly at my fighting-fit best - but all that really matters is the size of the smile partially hidden behind that full-face, that I couldn't get off for days...
  23. Took the Bike Lesson, since I've never been downhilling before - and after seeing what Whistler, BC terms as "Intermediate" over at Lost Lake - figured this would be wise... Seriously stoked I did. Had an awesome guide, 19yr old from the UK [who has already decided he is moving to Whistler - cannot blame him], and various multi-nationals, 5 of us in total... Did the basics, and then quickly got up to speed. It was useful having someone explain the lifts - it's very straight-forward, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind in getting the bike on... After the lesson was done [2.5 hours], we still had an 1,5 hours to hit the trails... I would recommend the lesson to almost everyone - it just helps getting into the ebb and flow of the place... Biggest thing to get my head around: Just how much rocks and air a 8" DH machine can gobble up... That, and the sign threatening revocation of Bike Park rights to any person caught cycling uphill...
