  1. Glad to hear you're okay... have you thought of changing your avatar?
  2. Nelspruit UP to Kaapsehoop and back (65-70Km). Going up will take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours, but coming down... 15-20 minutes. The Grapskop to Nelspruit via Sudwala is just loooonnnggg.
  3. Thanx wolverine... you've just justified the reason why I joined GWCC. As a committee member said on yesterday's (Sunday) club ride... we're a club that cares.Frosty2007-04-02 05:55:53
  4. I found an interesting article on the origins of "TREK", or at least how they got to the name... http://www.vintage-trek.com/TREK_History1.pdf Daai voorlaaier wapen is still out there somewhere... if someone has a pic, please post it.
  5. At least Arnie sounds more professional than Gerald de Kok... is he (Gerald) related to Sakkie??
  6. Actually I find the Yanks pronounciation of our local towns/participants rather amusing... especially Oudsthoorn (Outs-horn)
  7. I once heard/read somewhere that: if your legs are taking strain, spin more (higher cadence); if your lungs are taking strain, grind higher gears (lower cadence). Therefore, your heart rate should determine what cadence to ride.
  8. Well, would you know... I'm now a Domestique (whatever)
  9. Anything to help - actually trying to boost my posts (novice sounds so... @$%#$%#$
  10. Notice the 2002 in the web address, and reference made to the 18th Shova - 2007 is their 21st year. This article is at least 3-4 years old...
  11. aka, "Puddle Pirates" - therefore no need for the high tide - even though it tried last week.
  12. At 75% for a 3-hr training ride, I burn about 800kcal/hour. At 85% for a 3-hr race, I burn about 1000kcal/hour. Weighing in @ 85Kg.
  13. Thanks for the advice... I guess one step at a time. Having improved my PB of 04:06 to 03:13 (94.7) and 03:43 to 02:51 (H2H) - I can see that spinning, w/e rides and gym work does count for something. Having only done 1 Argus I will have to wait until next year to see if I can improve on the 3:14 posted this year. I guess time will tell.
  14. Has anyone got an opinion on the Chris Carmichael/Lance Armstrong "7-weeks to a better race" training manual? In the book it refers to MSHR (Maximum Sustainable Heat Rate) as aposed to the normal "220-age" to calculate MHR. I bought the book in Feb this year hoping to benefit from it, but decided to follow my own training program leading up to the Argus. Now that I have time, I will try it, but I haven't come across some of the terms used in this thread.
  15. Well worth the time reading through it... I wonder how many cyclists are actually signalling their intentions to the motorists?? No where near enough. I have made a point of clearly showing my intentions while on the road. More often than not, the motorist has appreciated it, knowing what I plan to do, and has allowed me the time to do it. A quick thank you, and that's one less irritated driver on the road. Perhaps these motorists are cyclists, and understand the situation - who knows. Whether you're on your own, or in a bunch, it all starts with you (the cyclists). And when it comes to lights on the front/rear of the bike... it amazing to see how many cyclists have a light, but don't actually use it.
  16. 23% - must be the Nivea (for Men) products.
  17. How much (money) do you need to raise to erect another 30 signs?Frosty2007-03-19 08:15:11
  18. Try Bike Scene in Springs - ask for Derek.
  19. Remember one thing... as long as your transmitter is picking up a heart rate, it using battery power. That doesn't mean it (battery) will run-out quicker than the receiver. But I agree, it a good thing to send in the transmitter as well. If your software is older than the current version, they will also update it for you. If you don't have spiral-like image on the display (when in time display mode, you don't have the most up-to-date version.
  20. For a quick response, send it to Polar yourself - it may take up to 2 weeks if you send it through the shop where you bought it. Polar offer a same day service if it's in early enough. Depending on which watch/computer you have, it's not that easy to change the battery yourself, without risking damage to the unit.
  21. I decided to call Gail Heuwel on the number shown on the 94.7 entry form. Was told to call Glen Lottering, who has said that every cyclists who enters a race (race/funride) MUST have a license. So much for 94.7 hoping to over-take the Argus as the biggest individually timed cycle race. Seems their biggest (participant) race will be a thing of the past.
