  1. Ini-Kaap: The road between Rooiels and Gordon's Bay (and back again), then up the hill to Pringle Bay. In Gauteng: Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve - very little traffic, the occasional wildlife and of course the downhills after each climb. And last but by no means least: Nelspruit, White River, Sabie and Grapskop - all the road joining these towns.Frosty2007-04-04 04:57:25
  2. Geldof in Eastgate - they have a few on display standing at least 500mm tall - cost unknownFrosty2007-04-04 03:02:59

    Potjiekos

A new addition to the list is a Bully beef and cabbage potjie. Forget the spitting etiquette, what about farting???
  4. It's not what you have, but what you do with it that counts. I'm quite happy with my 9.5Kg alloy framed, carbon-forked, tiagra-spec'd bike. Add 1.82m in height and 83Kg of fat and muscle to that and I am still able to finish most 100Km races in a little over the 3-hour mark. As soon as I crack the 3-hour mark on the major races, it will be time to sit back and amire the views, rather the back wheel and brake calipers of the person in front of me.
  5. Glad to hear you're okay... have you thought of changing your avatar?
  6. Nelspruit UP to Kaapsehoop and back (65-70Km). Going up will take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours, but coming down... 15-20 minutes. The Grapskop to Nelspruit via Sudwala is just loooonnnggg.
  7. Thanx wolverine... you've just justified the reason why I joined GWCC. As a committee member said on yesterday's (Sunday) club ride... we're a club that cares.Frosty2007-04-02 05:55:53
  8. I found an interesting article on the origins of "TREK", or at least how they got to the name... http://www.vintage-trek.com/TREK_History1.pdf Daai voorlaaier wapen is still out there somewhere... if someone has a pic, please post it.
  9. At least Arnie sounds more professional than Gerald de Kok... is he (Gerald) related to Sakkie??
  10. Actually I find the Yanks pronounciation of our local towns/participants rather amusing... especially Oudsthoorn (Outs-horn)
  11. I once heard/read somewhere that: if your legs are taking strain, spin more (higher cadence); if your lungs are taking strain, grind higher gears (lower cadence). Therefore, your heart rate should determine what cadence to ride.
  12. Well, would you know... I'm now a Domestique (whatever)
  13. Anything to help - actually trying to boost my posts (novice sounds so... @$%#$%#$
  14. Notice the 2002 in the web address, and reference made to the 18th Shova - 2007 is their 21st year. This article is at least 3-4 years old...
  15. aka, "Puddle Pirates" - therefore no need for the high tide - even though it tried last week.
  16. At 75% for a 3-hr training ride, I burn about 800kcal/hour. At 85% for a 3-hr race, I burn about 1000kcal/hour. Weighing in @ 85Kg.
  17. Thanks for the advice... I guess one step at a time. Having improved my PB of 04:06 to 03:13 (94.7) and 03:43 to 02:51 (H2H) - I can see that spinning, w/e rides and gym work does count for something. Having only done 1 Argus I will have to wait until next year to see if I can improve on the 3:14 posted this year. I guess time will tell.
  18. Has anyone got an opinion on the Chris Carmichael/Lance Armstrong "7-weeks to a better race" training manual? In the book it refers to MSHR (Maximum Sustainable Heat Rate) as aposed to the normal "220-age" to calculate MHR. I bought the book in Feb this year hoping to benefit from it, but decided to follow my own training program leading up to the Argus. Now that I have time, I will try it, but I haven't come across some of the terms used in this thread.
  19. Well worth the time reading through it... I wonder how many cyclists are actually signalling their intentions to the motorists?? No where near enough. I have made a point of clearly showing my intentions while on the road. More often than not, the motorist has appreciated it, knowing what I plan to do, and has allowed me the time to do it. A quick thank you, and that's one less irritated driver on the road. Perhaps these motorists are cyclists, and understand the situation - who knows. Whether you're on your own, or in a bunch, it all starts with you (the cyclists). And when it comes to lights on the front/rear of the bike... it amazing to see how many cyclists have a light, but don't actually use it.
  20. 23% - must be the Nivea (for Men) products.
  21. How much (money) do you need to raise to erect another 30 signs?Frosty2007-03-19 08:15:11
