  1. OK so I go get my new pair of Cumulus 13 shoes from Randburg Runner at an amazing price of R995 and I am very happy with myself. Goodbye Sportsmans W. I entered the Tough One a 32km run last Sunday. So the first first 15k's are smooth sailing. At the 16k mark I detect a pain in my left knee which gradually gets worse. At the 21k mark (2hrs) I grind to a complete halt. I cannot run anymore my left knee is killing me. I ended up walking the last 10 k's to the finish and crossed the finish line in 4h10. What a frikken disaster. Even the grannies were faster than me. Cant remember the last time I felt so useless. The comment from one of the marshalls about triathletes walking did'nt help either. Total humiliation. So I am walking and thinking WTF ! what has caused this happen. I ask myself what has changed ? What is new ? My brand new running shoes !! ok so I'm not so sure this is the cause but what else could it be ? Should I not have used my new shoes so soon ?

At least 2 large helpings of pasta the day before. NO chillies. 1 large bowl of future life for breakfast. 1 * 500ml shake (Pace n Power) immediately before the race. 2 * Roctane GU gels for the cycle. This will take care of me for the first 4 hours at which point I will have completed the swim and cycle. Next you need to handle the 21km run. So at some point during the cycle at about the 80km mark you will need to take in some solids i.e. banana or my personal favorite 1 * large chocolate muffin (can get a bit messy) together with 1 more Roctane. I would also have at least another 1 * roctane gu gel at the 1 hr mark during the run and another just in case. All of this of course depends on how long you take. 4 me it would typically be a 6 hour session. Pace n Power also make some nice energy drinks or 32GI. I prefer Pace n Power not so sweet and they have a neutral tasting product which you can mix with others so you can experiment with taste. Otherwise all that sweet stuff is going to make you ill.
  3. It is a very nice event. The only part I did not like was when we were heading out on the bike course you had the lite race guys coming back on the same single track. There is at least one uphill section that is very steep and rocky so depending on what everyone else is doing you may very well end up walking that section. Oh yes I loved the run section where you get to cross the river. Take a few minutes timeout and sit in the water its very refreshing. Also theres a section where you get to climb up the side of the dam wall very steep, wet and slippery. It requires some very basic climbing skills. So take care you dont want to slip and break something. At least this time round I will have a pair of decent trail running shoes.
  4. Thanks for this went there this morning and bought a pair of Asics Cumulus 13. Xcellent price. Really good service.
  5. I remember driving a VW for many years and was very happy. Then a BMW salesperson recommended I test drive a 330d. I have never been happier since
  6. Hmmm kinda reminds me of when I decided to try a set of Specialized pros instead of buying Gator skins. What a disaster ! Anyway I have decided same is good. The QUESTION now is where do I get the best price ????
  7. I have been using a pair of Asics Cumulus 12 for road running for the last year and want a new pair of shoes. Do I stick with a winning formula or is there something else you good folks can recommend ? ALSO where can I get the best price for running shoes in and around Randburg ? Sportsmans want R1300 for Cumulus 13
  8. I thought you would say something like this. Must be all that training you did for the Capetown Challenge. By the way how was your weekend in Capetown ? Did you do a wine tasting tour ?
  9. Considering the run is this Sunday just how much running should I be doing this week assuming it would be a taper week ?
  10. If they did actually exist why are people like bob magob and JZ in power ... but then again maybe thats all part of the plan. I just wish someone would share the plan with me
  11. ah thats not nice twitter is blocked on our firewall at work
  12. Must agree with all the comments there is absolutely no way anyone in their right state of mind will enter for this event next year considering what has happened this year. It might be feasible for the Capetown locals to enter considering location but folks who have to invest money in flights accommodation etc will not take any chances. Lets not even mention the many months of training.
  13. What is the distance of the suikerbos rand loop ?
  14. I hate littering. I can understand, but do condemn, someone throwing their KFC or AcMAC packaging out the taxi window because these people come from "disadvantaged" backgrounds and cant see or understand anything beyond their own noses BUT when I see fellow cyclists doing the littering that really makes me mad
  15. I ride my bike 3 times a week. My route is 51km long and takes me about 2 hours to complete including robots stops etc etc. I did 3h23 for 94.7 and had plenty left afterwards. The last time I did a 100km ride was about 6 months ago. Quality not quantity.
  16. Fond memories ... my oldest is now 18 and writing matric exams. Bicycles are a thing of the past. Right now its beer, babes and cars. Kinda reminds me of someone else I knew a long time ago
  17. Arrrgggg I am sooooo jealous. No ocean up here in Joburg ... germies lake maybe ....
  18. Xcellent service from EasyBike - Ordered my xmas special XT crank from EasyBike late afternoon yesterday and PRESTO delivered at lunch time today . Thanks Mathew Now I got something to do this weekend besides 94.7
  19. The crank has a 30mm spindle. Not sure what the inside diameter is I will measure it this evening.
  20. Kiwi. Where can one buy such a beast ? LBS ?
  21. I have a unused "Java Espresso HT" Frame hanging in my garage as well as a FSA v-drive BB30 only crank and would like to pair the two if possible. Now I'm no techno junkie so what I need to know is will a BB30 only crank fit this frame. Does anyone know ? The web site says the frame takes a 68mm BB See here "http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.za/pJAVA%20ESPRESSO%20HT%20FRAMESET/Java-Espresso-HT-Frameset.aspx"

Eiiiish I must have the same problem as Gripen. No I know why I have never managed to get near the start line in an IM ...
  23. Need a little advice here. The RAC Tough One is happening in 2 weeks time on the 27th Nov. I'm really not sure if I should be doing it. I do about 35km of running a week. I have run quite a few 21km's (Deloitte PTA very hilly 2h15). I run a 15km at least once a week consistently at about 10km/hr without too much of a sweat. Point is there's a difference between running a 21 and a 32 and the tough one is is very hilly up and down. So considering the km's I do every week would you say a 32km is feasible ? The cut off time is 4.5 hours ? Oh yes and there's another consideration the Pretoria West Power station triathlon on the same day. I think though The Tough One would be more of a challenge.
  24. 8 Years !! that is truely good news
  25. Well your wish has just come true. Got email this morning to say the results have been LOST. I would not mind too much except when I got out the water I realized that somehow my watch had been paused at about 26 mins. Must have been all the kicking and arm thrashing in the maelstrom which continued throughout the swim. About 3/4 way through the swim I had at least 3 of the female swimmers run me over so to speak. Yes I suspect my run/walk also would not look too good in comparison to the swim and cycle. Spent more time dunking myself in the bins than running.
