  1. no, I'm planning on going on my own for that one
  2. My comment was about peninsula rides, lots of idiots turning around in blind corners to take photos (or Ubers to drop tourists on a hiking spot, I almost hugged a car like that on my way down from the cable car in that upper hairpin..), then pulling out of wherever they parked withtout checking first, or angry people hooting and swearing at you for riding abreast even if both riders are left side of the yellow line.... Should I mention the usual pedestrian looking your way but still proceeding to jump off the pavement on the road right in front of you ? Nah that's not a summer thing, that all year long !
  3. Sold, what's the best argument to convince a wife to go there with 2 kids ?
  4. If you like being alive, it's probably a good idea to exclude that between mid november to end of jan
  5. yes that was pretty clear It's just the guy said he doesn't mind mixing tar and gravel, that's totally possible this side, and to be honest, although I absolutely loved the loop I did recently in Cederberg, I much prefer for my daily rides doing them this side (mostly between durbanville and melkbos), because 1) the gravel roads are in much better shape and 2) you hardly ever see a car on those gravel roads, when in Cederberg locals seem to think they're racing a rally stage (maybe that's why the state of the roads was so bad).
  6. I'm curious, what's more in melkbos than this ? (Except for that Melkbossie stretch that goes nowhere). If only they reopened koeberg 😭
  7. If you gravitate around durbanville there are a few options that mix quiet roads and gravel roads, wether you chose to stay local (tygerberg memberships will give you access to even more gravel) or if you chose to go towards malmesbury, paarl/wellington or stellies, I’m sure you can plan a few 100km rides with nice gravel sections although they will rarely be more than a half hour at a time
  8. f*ing oxygen thieves, I wish them the worst. Good on you, hope they're caught and convicted for attempted murder
  9. they have the cheapest X0 10-50 cassettes, order went smooth, just their card payment solution is a bit *** and takes about a week to reflect their side, but I wasn't in a rush (cassette will probably only go on the bike before swartberg100), so happy with them, they saved me 1 or 2k
  10. Forward in motion works for me!
  11. Because the roads are so dangerous these days
  12. I was told by the fastest guy up there last year that 46-52 was a bit hard up there and that he'd go smaller chainring this year, so although you've done it and it's possible, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone (unless you're in it for the street cred). It is the one time in the year I'm planning to use a smaller chainring. Otherwise rest of the year, honestly the 46/10-50 does it all for me, from the chappies ride with the roadies, to the 40:20s, torque sessions, etc etc. Yes the gaps are a bit bigger, but never too much that it's a problem to follow a workout, or in a race, and it's probably good to change from slightly slower/standing to slightly higher/seating during a ride anyways. But like someone said, most important part is what you can get your hands on at the price you're willing to pay, I will always go for the 1x option 1st on the gravel bike, but either option works just fine, Venter won boland 100 miler on a 2x, if it's good for him, it's good for you
  13. GX AXS with Rival hoods
  14. 10-50 with a 1x46T chainring is the perfect rig for me.
  15. Thanks, my understanding is it's 230+150 for 36 hours ? not even worth using uber in the end 😅
  16. okay yolo... I went for the small car, much cheaper than uber + shipping, and less stress still an expensive race 😅 While I have your attention, anyone has experience on cost for leaving a car at CPT airport for 36hrs ? if it's anything less that 600 bucks it's also cheaper than Uber 😅
  17. haha I'm not pro enough to do that 😅 yes, could end up cheaper than Uber + shipping the bike both ways. I did not think of the fact that I could still build the bike and fold the box, and fit everything in the car. This is why I was thinking these nationals would be a good rehearsal for gravel nationals 😅
  18. To me Gauteng is the wild west, how safe is this route ?
  19. Thanks for the offer I can't leave the box at the airport as I'd need it to fly back. I'll contact Cyclelab that could be a great option having it shipped from my local branch to that Boksburg branch both ways. You think it's doable to ride from their store to Meyerton ? I might not feel like doing the ride after 140km though, but then like you say I could still uber with the bike at the back, drop it off at cyclelab..
  20. Except uberXL is 300 bucks from home to CPT, but R2000 from OR Tambo to Meyerton... so more expensive than the flight.. no thanks
  21. Thanks everyone, I'll look again on their website or just rock up with my bike as advised, it's a much better deal than the business class thing ! I usually go to my LBS and beg for a box when I need to fly, last time was when I brought my road bike to france and left it there, so I'll have to do that again now Cheers!
  22. Hi everyone, I'm contemplating flying to joburg for a couple of races this season (1st one being road nationals in feb, then probably gravel nationals later in the year). I checked through google flights, ended up on two different companies website, the one doesn't show options to add sports equipement to the reservation (I think it was airlink), and the other (FlySafair) only shows 3 options (pretty much the normal, premium and first class or something similar), and only the most expensive one has sports equipement included (as well as a few more options I don't care about). Doesn't seem like you can book with the normal package and then add on top your bike equipement as extra. So right now I'm looking 5k just for the flights for one race. Is there other options that I don't know about ? Should I postnet to postnet my bike and collect it my self there when I arrive ? 🤣 Cheers
  23. Bought some on aliexpress, not sure if they are the real deal or fake, the 10T isn't 100% under max load even on a new chain. Seems I only ever had issues with the 10T on shimano MTB cassettes, never on sram road or mtb groupsets...
  24. What a day for some good base miles 😍
