  1. Exactly 1 second recording is precisely there for accurate power and speed recording. And if you use autopause then ensure you set it up correctly i.e. anything less than 4kmh is considered a pause, as the garmin units still display a speed even when stationary. Strava endomondo, etc will never be as acurate as a proper GPS unit with any of the measurements.
  2. Remember a edge 500 is a barometric altimeter so if your base altitude is incorrect the rest of your data will also be incorrect.
  3. If you turn off 1 second recording you will get totally inacurate data, the pausing has nothing to do with the elevation stats.
  4. He is in Randburg F.C, not sure what entry level races they have up there, but most of the bigger races now have smaller easier versions. i.e down here you get the Black Rhino (for the fit) and the White Rhino (for the newbies) we also have greyton tour, winelands tour, and houwhoek tour, Whines to whales trail etc etc. Youll just have to peg what stage races you would like to do one day and then see if they offer the mini or non timed versions. A beauty if you are willing to travel is the RE-CM 200 in knysna.
  5. If you want more accurate data then you need to set elevation points on any GPS, Garmin does cater for this. Remember any gps, by mode of operation sees the world as flat. It uses various techniques to establish elevation none of them 100% accurate. Thats why you will always see total differences between a garmin/polar/bryton file, they will all give different distances and different elevations. The key is basically that if you use your gps on the same track you will always get close to the same figure on the same route and thats what you use to judge your climbing. Endomondo is the absolute worst at setting elevation. But like i said if you want to get more accurate measurements you will need to set the elevation points. Its still not 100% accurate but more accurate than most.
  6. Just as a matter of interest and this is probably not good advise by any measure, but I suffer from servere lower back problems thanks to many years of judo abuse, And when I am fit and strong i dont feel it so much on the bike, but recently i tore the ligaments on my thumb which had me out of commission for about 4 months. So i basically lost all my fitness and strength as a stationary bike just isnt an option on my bike. Anyway long story short, mates of mine played with my bike a leeuwenbosch, a couple weeks back, i didnt realize they changed my ergofit settings. And i started cycling again two weeks back, I thought it odd that I haven't experienced any back pain on three long rides that i did. So i rechecked my settings, and my saddle was dropped by about 1.5cm. So last night i put it back where its supposed to be, and within 10 minutes i had bad back pain again. Dropped it by the 1.5cm again and poof back pain gone. So logically in my case i have to deduce that the ergofit is to maximize all your muscles during your pedal stroke, and my back being weak, i can instantly feel the pain again. (Remember kids its suppose to be the most effective setup to use all your muscles.) but riding pain free is also not bad. So i figure i am going to start with the saddle lower than what its supposed to be and as my fitness and strength pics up, ill incrementally raise it by 5mm every two weeks till its back on the right height. I know this is probably useless info but hey thought i would put it out there.
  7. yip if its a deep section rim then use the rim strip, if its a more shallow rim use the rim tape.
  8. +1 for Renay, and yeah Jeroen made the ergofit program, but Renay is his no1 boy and he is just as good.
  9. 90 percent of grip is in the front, and most of the rolling resistance come from the back, you can run a Ardent in front and not notice a rolling Resistance difference to having a ikon in the front. So nope i wouldn't run it in the front i like grip ... and my teeth.
  10. Its only the nissan series where they moan, last year they moaned at gravel travel, i ignored them, this year they didnt say anything.
  11. no basically the same setup you would do if it was right side up
  12. loads of sites, with loads of calculators, with loads and loads of opinions on what constitutes a bike setup. All of them going on leg length few of them actually considering reach and effective toptube lengths. You can get it close if you read all the theory, and methods, but doing a ergofit saves time, hassle and improves comfort and balance for the small price of R550. To be honest they changed my setup by millimeters and not even centimeters and it made the world of difference. Just go do the fitment he can catch up on the theory later while he is riding a dialed in setup.
  13. Oddly the Aspen survived 3 months in which time i killed 3 ikon exc3/abc4/xo (or what ever all the bloody decals are) but the only aspen's i can get here are the normal foldable ones and i am tired of buying new rubber. Didnt like the Racing ralphs or rocket rons, they just seem'ed to washout or lock up too often. I now run the X-kings front and rear and i am very happy. Have to say if I get a UST Aspen ill fit it again, that thing rolls like a slick and corners like its on rails.
  14. Mount it upside down, not the best pics but basically have the arms of the main bracket face at about 25 degrees on the post, the camera sits tucked infront of your cables and bike boards, it cuases less stress on the brackets, so they dont brake so easily. and it never rotates or moves and you dont have to have the screws too tight, light pressure holds it nicely in place, just remember to change the setting to record in UPd mode oh and if you have to flip the bike upside down for some trail maintenance the camera is out of harms way too.
  15. Just use the freaking "flag ride" button, and they will remove all the crap people post there.
  16. Ride up the DH tracks they love lycra clad people doing that. .... PoS sad news indeed mate.
  17. Havent tried the gp3 yet, but with the 960 up to the hd hero2, you should get 3 hours minimum bat life, secondly drop the framerates on those to 720, everything else looks shaky and ****. Make sure you have a descent SD card.
  18. ikon front / aspen rear, you will be amazed how much grip the aspen gives for a low rolling resistance tyre, Only thing i dont like about this combo (i use to run it) i seem to be the king of destroying maxxis sidewalls.or x-king front and rear.
  19. speed and how to unweight your front end, notice his body position.
  20. Any news on the before 6am and after 7pm riding, its renewal time and I need to establish if its worth my while paying 400 Randela's
  21. yup i got a bottle of disc brake cleaner for cars, worked like a charm when i use to run avids, just a drop of two on the rotors only, go stop a couple of times and bobs your aunty all sorted. No more turkey wobble.
  22. There is a speed and distance clause too yeah.
  23. What i cant figure out is that they assign points according to HR , but nowhere does it say what they think my Max HR should be. I know in theory its 189 but in reality its 174.
  24. Obviously its all subjective, all I am saying is that in my opinion the tygerberg trails are Ok'ish, they don't rank high up on my list of fun things to do, they don't totally suck either, but they are not spectacular. I pay my club fees every year simply because i work close to the trails, and i do my after work rides there mostly because you can't do botthills at night, I live 2km away from Hazendal. If I had the option to ride bothills till 9pm at night i would see no particular reason to join the club again.
