Hi, these come at a very similar price point and heard good things about both.

Looking for a simple fixie commuter style bike but question is which one??

    Any feedback appreciated!

    Thanks

Most of the Simple Sam's that I've seen have old school quill style stems. Makes it hard to adjust the setup on the bike. I'd go for Rook based purely on that.

Talk to me about the helmets, missed this and might go back if decent !

Abus helmets also on special. Picked up a Stormchaser for R2700, retails at R3200

Those Giro's Bub Marley mentioned had very limited size & colour options when I was there on Thurs evening.

This bike here seems to be the problem, leveraging in mid are with no rider on it. 🫣

😆 You've actually circled me! White & red helmet.

I was busy looking for the biggest, comfiest looking "mattress" to land on. Just remember going down and having others piling into my bike that luckily protected me.

Was thinking the same thing - just takes that one guy to clip a cone into the group and the race officials will be standing there thinking HTF do we get that wrong ! 🤨

That's exactly what happened years ago to the front of 1F (I think). Took down about 40-50 of us, was total carnage.

Just because some idiot thought it would be clever to try dodge round outside the cones and then cut back in.

We got front page coverage in the weekend Argus & centre spread in the Cycle tour book....proper celebrity stuff 😖

The CTCT is the one race where I'm actually uncomfortable with a higher seeding than my capabilities on the day. 🙂
You basically go all out (uphill and downhill) trying not get a heart attack and ignoring all the beeping from your HRM to stay in the bunch until you blow in Constantia...

    Fixed 😆

Thank you for these calculation graphs, but I’m not able to understand the answer in correlation to what’s happening to me

42x11 at a cadence of 90 rpm results in a speed of approximately 44km/hr.

That's not an overly fast cadence, assuming you regularly train at that and quicker. However if the majority of your cycling is done at a much slower cadence then sitting at 85-90 rpm is going to elevate your HR and fatigue you faster.

If you use the tables supplied you can get an indication of cadence & resultant speed using different gearing. Take note of a couple. Then when you're training try maintain certain cadences based on the speed & gearing you've noted.

every decent down chappies is a battle to avoid an accident and nothing gets done about the motoring public disregard for the speed limit and staying left of the white line.

    But there is a sign...

he incident involved motorcyclists in a head on scenario. Ebike and ICEbike collided. No word on injuries yet but it looked pretty serious for the road to have been closed to both cyclists and motor traffic

I heard from a reliable source that the cyclist was hit head on by the motorcyclist while descending Chappies direction Noordhoek. Supposedly the motorcyclist was passing a car on a blind corner.

Note, I don't think the car in pic was involved, think it was just passing through afterwards.

but in this 46th day of the year 2024, why the heck can nobody write a simple SQL query to pull the data from one db and add to another db ?

Where there is a will there is a way, it seem like there is no will, maybe just a bunch of willys though.

Sure, easy if the data structures are the same...

Take a look at the Norco search, you can get it local. A friend has one and he likes it alot

    Isn't that an aluminium frame?

I rode a friend's Norco Search a couple of times, great bike and excellent value for money. His was definitely an alu frame version though.

Thanks! If you’re happy to share, that would be awesome. 🤙

Not sure when you're thinking of going, just be aware that it's bound to a bit dusty now with the vegetation being burnt. Think the fire that's ravaged the Die Dam/Buffelsjag area might still be burning. Quite a large tract of land already ravaged 😢

@guidodg thanks for the reply, yeah ive never done a multi day trip with a bicycle, but don't want to do the obvious Cederberg option. So looking for something slightly different (And safe of course) don't feel like wrestling with speeding farm bakkies

Out of interest why the hesitation to do the Cederberg circuit? It really is a special place to spend time on a bicycle!

As an aside I've unfortunately been buzzed by the white bakkie brigade on a lot of gravel roads but didn't have any issues in the Cederberg.

No... read the whole sentence you quoted. Then read it again in context to the thread.

I think you have completely misinterpreted my point.

You are pointedly saying almost exactly what I'm saying while trying to disagree with me. That is why I am confused

I'm off to bed. Never mind 🤣

Off to bed before 9.30pm!? I thought ultra endurance athletes never slept!

Sure, I agree with the reasoning as to why it's difficult to find stock. But suggesting that there are/were/have been millions of options isn't what I've experienced. I'd love to just walk into the Spez shop, grab the white Align MIPS helmet and walk out (I've heard a certain shop in town let's you get stuff for free) but it just doesn't fit my (possibly) uniquely shaped head..

  14. 5 minutes ago, Jewbacca said:

Wait.... So you disagree that there are/have been lots of options available which has had an impact on stock rotation and sales in a diluted market so players are bringing in less selection......... but then say you can't find the exact unicorn you're looking for because not here but previously here?

    I'm confused

Don't be confused, it's simpler than you think.

Your opinion: lot's of brands with lots of options

My opinion: not really that many options that I've been able to find.

At no point in my reply to you did I reference looking for a specific brand/model. I'm merely stating my opinion that although it might appear that there's a large choice, once you get looking it actually isn't that diverse. Suggesting that looking for a white helmet within a certain budget that fits well is a unicorn is just being obtuse...

There are SO many helmet brands with a million options available in SA. Stock rotation and profitability is certain to whittle down some of the numbers at some point, much like the #enduro bike brands all dwindling in the local market.

     😜

Mmm, not sure I agree with you here. Perhaps I just haven't found the motherlode. Definitely not a huge selection in the south, or southern suburbs.

Big difference between brands being represented and actually finding a helmet in stock that fits well & is available in the size and colour (white or silver) you want.

Maybe I'm too particular, but I do like wearing a helmet that feels right.

Yes, the local range of Giro helmets is also quite limited.

Maybe the higher end stuff got very expensive and Omnico may struggle to move stock.
    Just guessing though.

Was looking at a specific Giro model, transpires it comes in a MIPS version but not available in SA. Definitely seems like we're getting a small segment of what's on offer internationally.

The back end gets going much earlier than years of old. You might be surprised. The final group leaves before 9 nowadays. Still post lunch finishes for many though.

    https://www.capetowncycletour.com/lifecycle-week/ctct/2023-cape-town-cycle-tour-start-times/

    Great, thanks.

Well, actually not great potentially starting just before 9am but definitely better than 10am!

I'd better pack lunch and extra sun cream!

  18. Ok so it appears I'm riding the cycle tour with my SO. It'll be her first event, think it'll be my 18th or 19th.

Roughly what time/group would someone with a previous 5hr result start? It's been awhile since I've ridden and have always had the benefit of starting fairly early.

Just trying to manage some expectations here around what is most likely going to be a late start and post lunch finish!

  19. Omnico used to import a wide range of Bell & Giro. Unfortunately for some reason they decided to no longer bring in the higher end Bell range (road).

Bell used to be my go to choice so I'm very bleak. Also in the market for a new helmet and struggling to find similar fitting options in other brands - plus stock appears to be an issue severely limiting choice.

I spoke to them and they took my details to see if they could get a replacement but nothings come of it yet.. so just trying my luck here before I go actually go back in and see if they could find the part..

If the helmet is under warranty they should just replace the helmet, forget about trying to find a part!

Morning chaps.. so if anyone has an old bell helmet that I could try take the float dial off and transfer onto mine that has broken.. or has just the dial or knows where I can get the dial unit.. haven’t had the helmet long so would be a pitty to throw it out for something like this breaking.. 🥹

    IMG_2103.jpeg

If you haven't had the helmet long then it should be covered under warranty. Chat with the shop you bought it from.

Thank you for the feedback. Im out in Benoni. The bike seems to be in good nick, would just like to get everything checked and adjusted, like the gears and so on. It works, but think the changes could be better

    At 1.77m I'd think you'd be better suited to a medium frame. I'm 1.85m and ride a L.

Just check the size, you don't want to be too stretched out.
