  1. ^ How much wear does your set of HD's have at this point? Lucky I didn't buy the MK's because the main reason I want new tyres is the burp protection and ability to run lower press, that would have been an expensive flop! Are these bad experiences with HD's due to a bad batch of tyres, people that ride in ridiculously dry/jagged/rocky trails or what? Seems the pacestar Nobby Nic also has a susceptibility to lugs tearing off, is it just par for the course for a supa grippy tyre, ie less grippy tyres don't have the problem because the forces they are subjected to are a lot less and their lugs are never subjected to the amount of leverage that would rip one off?
  2. Those that use HD's, how fast have you found they wear/real world longevity and is the side lug ripping off issue really that bad, is it from hard braking through corners or just generally from hitting corners fast and hard? They are such highly rated tyres, some people have no issues others chew them up pronto and/or have the lugs ripping off and those reports arent limited to the softer trailstar as may be expected but also the harder pacestar. Anyone ever seen the HD performance line in SA, which seem to last better?
  3. Who has them in 26" in sa?
  4. Well it looks like the HD's are great tyres and roll well but don't last, even the pacestar compound, not convinced on the MK II tread pattern, some big spaces between the middle and outer lugs. Interesting point people made is the cheaper performance HD still has very good grip, lasts longer and the knobs dont tear off.
  5. When you mean get both, one of each? Only budgeted for one set of tyres, Black Friday sale at buycycle I think it is, has either option at R500 each, probably the cheapest they will be had. How does the HD roll, is it ok for a bit of moderate distance trail riding really seem chunky, more a specialist tyre? Ok how does the HD compare to a Nevegal! Have had those before, they seemed to get quicker the rougher it got, they were pretty slow rolling but the grippy benefits seemed to out weigh the slowness, only part they weren't fun on was on tar, they had a serious tar rumble. Out of the continental tyres the Trail King looks like the one to get but haven't seen those much in Sa.
  6. Was hoping for a bit more than that! Don't really want to be the test pilot, R1000 a set is not particularly cheap. Tried reading random reviews and its pretty pointless, one guy has bad luck and hits a sharp rock first ride slices the tyre, another rides it for 1yr flawlessly, another guy rides in a torrential down pour and says the tyres don't grip on wet rocks.. Suppose its back to that endless debate, there is no perfect tyre, faster rolling-less grip, more grip-slower rolling. HD does seem to be the grip king but not the toughest in terms of wear/tread knobs tearing etc. How do they roll, they look a bit like MX knobblies?
  7. Which one: Schwalbe Hans Dampf Evo Snakeskin 26 x 2.35'' (either PaceStar or Trailstar) vs Continental Mountain King II Protection 2.4 with Black Chilli I'm leaning towards the MK, any Continental with the Black Chilli compound people seem to rave about and the tread is a bit faster rolling that the Hans Dampf. Both are R500 a piece so no competition there.
  8. If you have tyres with floppy sidewalls is a sure way to avoid burping pumping them quite hard, apart from a bumpy ride and less traction is that foolproof or will it still be a bit dodgy? Took a corner nice and fast with a 2.4 conti MK and the front burped and then jumped back on with a whole bunch of leaves and twigs stuck in the bead, had to pump it up with a co2 to make it hold.
  9. As one does when teal and acid lemon coloured baggies cross your path! What prices were the ION's at?
  10. Does the giant pedal have sealed bearings?
  11. Anyone tried the Spez flat pedal shoes and how much they cost?
  12. Claudio what are you doing in China!? Holiday or working?
  13. ^ mmm too much engrish..
  14. Epic! Dragging bikes in the freezing temps through deep snow... that must have been so backbreaking. Glad you blokes made it out safe and sound.
  15. CRC has 26" 2.35 HDs for R700 a pair incl shipping, excl duties, add R150 for DHL. If you go with DHL do you need to pay another R150 for the disembursement fee?
  16. The revealation is a perfect compromise between lightweight and long travel, the RLT with the RCT damper is very good. RS forks, bombproof and so easy to service, win win.
  17. If you use a nice solid patch, like a slightly more substantial MotoX tube patch maybe, and you fit the patch correctly/proper prep of the area that should be enough? The pressure of the air is pushing the patch onto the hole and if you do the patch properly they stick like crazy? How big is the hole?
  18. Patch it on the inside and then put a few drops of super glue on the cut from the outside.
  19. Ways! That's where the Indians dudes in Dirtbin get it from, all my time there, hearing it a zillion times, thought it was an abbreviation for mother trucker... Hauw Ay yoo, mada.. Ay dat oe's a mada Ay mada vey from dis jol, ek sah Hahahahaha
  20. Salient point from the study: The most overestimated aspect here is the frequently criticized extra weight of the wider tyre. To accelerate a pair of tyres with an extra weight of 500 g from 0 to 25 kph in 4 seconds requires an additional 4.2 W power. On the other hand the wider tyre on a grassy surface saves you 15.5 W against a narrower specimen, and this at the low speed of 9.5 kph. Moreover the rolling resistance reduction has a continuous effect while lighter weight is only of relevance during acceleration.
  21. Those are all pretty close to spec, apparently the width is supposed to be of the carcase but lots of debate around that in the webs, esp guys shouting about lots of the contis being minute/undersized.
  22. Are the NN oversized compared to their rated width? What you width are you running on the back
  23. People all over the web seem to rave about high rollers speed and general awesomeness, anyone have them in Sa? I see them every so often in the classifieds, normally wire bead DH versions. What width NobbyN do you run on the front Capricorn? I put a new 2.4 Mountain King on the front yesterday, new old stock with the old style tread pattern, nice and big, 2.4 is supposed to be almost the only size conti that actually is close to being true to size. Decent grip and rolls well.
  24. Is a Magic Mary slower than a Neveroll? I'd say at the end of the day you really want tyres that allow you to keep your flow/control, better to have slower rolling tractor tires that let you always be in the zone than skinnier or faster tyres that will always suck where it matters.
