  1. She outsmarted the best of the best in Tokyo. Problem is it's still unfortunately a very male-centric sport and doesn't pay well for women yet. The UAE thing sounds super exciting. The SA connection there, S2S, means that coaching learnings can be passed back to SA, and also some of the up and coming SA talent can find a way abroad. AMP has had one of her best seasons and hopefully can keep going for a couple more.
  2. Any space for the mathematician?
  3. R4k, ka ching?
  4. The steerer looks short cut on the Schwinn. Could the more aggressive position be an issue for you? A costly fix if it is and you need a more upright position. Is this Shimano 5800 vs 5800? How worn are the drivetrain components. Parts are expensive and not always easy to get, just saying. R3 more of a race bike, also lighter frame, and Schwinn more endurance inclined imho. Pedals included on the Schwinn? You'll need to budget if not. THe seatpost looks carbon on the Cervelo, more comfy. So many things....
  5. I'm 61. I do 7 -10 hours a week. I did a 3h30 some of the 7 passes George chunter (longest ride for 6 months by a good way, first on gravel roads this year) on tar and gravel, on my gravel bike last week. Corrugations too. No issues other than a pounding in the bars during, fine afterwards. Is this a bikefit issue, or could this be a weak upper back, deltoid, rhomboids etc? If your back feels tight, it's often weakness. Desk hockey? Just asking.. Easy exercises could maybe cure this, if it's the problem.
  6. I have one 26.4mm x 400, zero setback
  7. Even me. Just received, as a gift of course, a 165cm 105 set, and also a pair of Assioma duos. Very excited. I went to 170s 5 years ago, loved them, and am looking for a more open hip angle and improved cadence. 177cm/85 inseam
  8. Who dares wins! Well done to both Austria, and Kiesenhoffer and Ecuador, and Carapaz yesterday. And to the greedy wheelsuckers, sorry for you. Ignorance meh
  9. As a 60 yo I have used Cadence Revive which makes a big difference in my ability to recover. How is he mixing his hard on the bike efforts with his strength training? Sounds like he's doing a lot. Not that 65 is old, ok. If he gets the right coaching input he will be guided to train within his ability to recover. Remember, fitness adaptations (getting stronger) happen during rest.
  10. Most Postnets carry marine insurance. This covers non high risk items. Ask the counter assistant. Cost should be in the region of 3% of value. Postnet SA (the franchisor) is owned by Aramex, who offer up to R3000 cover on non insured items. Not a great policy with lots of exclusions....
  11. You're either part of the problem or part of the solution, pick one
  12. Incorrect. When the Kromdraai road was tarred it was narrower than present and there were no cycling lanes. The lanes were added afterwards, with the yellow lines - not as an emergency lane, rather lanes specifically created for cyclists TO CYCLE IN!!! Not a place to kuier with chommas while one fixes a tyre. If you have a flat on Cedar, you don't fix it in the left lane, you GET OFF THE ROAD. I get miffed if okes are parking off in the CYCLING LANE (no it's it the car emergency lane), and I have to turn my head and look behind me to pass the muppets in the main road to avoid getting rear ended by a car. My rant FWIW
  13. On a recent visit to Grahamstown I did Ecca Pass 9.9km ave 4.4% on newly redone Road. Woest Hill at 3.3km ave 8.2% a goodie. Some great road, gravel and mtb adventures to be had there.
  14. Some of the half decent hills on Joburg roads are too be found on "The Witwatersrand" z literally the ridge from Kdorp to Germies. On the West Sterkies, Kdorp, Doreen, Christian de Wet, Golf Club Terrace and some other short steepies can be tackled for a hilly ride (some a bit busy though).
  15. Where do I stand? Well, if you knew at R35k that it was a good deal and you were seriously in the market, why didn't you make a play at the seller's asking price? You lost out. We Buy Cars to the rescue. Sorry for you. (I carry no brief for Bikemarket, or any used bike/car or whatever dealer). Good luck to them. They haven't sold it yet, yet took a gamble they can and think they can make a few bucks on it. They've invested capital in premises for showcasing and comparisons to prospective buyers. They advertise here as a business. Maybe a lesson to punters, s***t or get off the pot. Not a moral or ethical question, just the market...
  16. Didn't he get stage at the Vuelta
  17. 4.55 min/k Frosty, well done! As a cyclist of 58 aiming for a sub 2 half at Skukuza (my one and only A race), my plan is to first get to about a 54 min 10k. I did 2.10 in my first half last year. Yus, but running is much harder than cycling. My best 5k is 27.30 so far
  18. With stans, min issues for year now
  19. I also know nothing. I ride pro one 25s at 50 to 80 psi max. Huge air volume on argent rim. Tyre width at 80 psi, >27mm
  20. On the road racing side, Louis Meintjes, JC Nel, James Fourie, Wesley Eslick, HB Kruger, Sean-Nic Bester, Jade Julius Steven van Heerden (I stand corrected). These are names from the U16/Juniors of 2007-2009 academies (Toyota, Mr Price and other) that come to mind who are still racing at Elite level, and who were dominant / competitive in their age groups. My daughter, one of the "guys" at the Toyota academy, heard some German Rap music on her only European trip with Jill. After stopping racing she completed matric, and a humanities degree with German as one of her majors. She is currently 18 months into an engineering degree in Germany (in German, and succeeding). Her single-minded determination as a youth cyclist, that enabled her to be competitve in the ladies elite pelaton at 16, has I believe, been a major factor in her current and far more important endeavour. Not one of that peer group of girls raced as elites successfully. I think Heidi Dalton is the only girl who has made the grade (again, I stand corrected). In hindsight are there lessons to take from this? Sure, and what opportunity costs / other directions / choices for the youngsters does one bring into the debate?
  21. Great event, cool weather and wind made it interesting. Big ups to the organisers, marshalls and other volunteers. My First proper race in 10 years. Blown but grinning
  22. Mr Anarchy, I have a 26.4 seatpost, unused, 400mm inline black. Brand-X, from crc, for what have you. PM me.
  23. I saw an article about that bike (Hypervox) on Cyclingnews. It is nice, but Imho I would get over it after a while. I was also unimpressed with the weight listed as 7.4kg (given Zipp tubbs and Sram red group
  24. How is Sondela after that tragic fire a few years back. Have they rebuilt the chalets? We used to camp there, and ride through the reserve. It was easy enough for littlies, and great for game spotting too! So many mtb encounters with animals...
  25. There was a time when the Lab Racing Team marshalled the bunches to get the riders to keep to the 2 abreast idea. The marshalling by a stronger rider is more effective because the race snakes can patrol the bunches to ensure the riders remain disciplined. It would appear that socially-minded although not necessarily stronger members seem to do duty these days, which imho, doesn't make for safer riding. THis is my observation from passing the (slower) bunches where the mayhem normally occurs, usually in the climbs. What I have found to be effective is a dual marshall system, with one setting the pace and one patrolling. The marshalls can alternate, thereby both improving the quality of their rides. The same tjops who are oblivious to the motorists would probably be the first motorists hooting and threatening cyclists who dare wander into their path.
