It works for all kinds of threats. The two legged kind too. Just make sure you use the one spraying a stream. The stream is visible and you can aim for the nose. It leads to the dog's brakes to lock up. Be careful with the fog spraying nozzle though. The wind direction and your speed could lead to your own suffering.

Oh, and pepper spray gets old and not so effective over time. Keep your spray fresh.

Just a word of advice on using pepper spray .Any amount sprayed at the offending party will also end up in your own eyes .You need very little to be carried on the wind to drift into your face .The only solution is to put local anesthetic drops into your eyes .I carry a small amount with me. Pepper spray is very effective and will take anything with a tear film down in seconds

Whatever !.I have never seen a 36 oval . A 34 oval gives 32 and 36 effectively and they work for me .I know the stroke is still round ,but the power transfer of the stroke is not equal on the same leg in the up and down stroke with an oval ,and that is why they work .Gravity helps with the downstroke and then you crunch a 36 teeth downwards .On the upstroke you raise a slightly easier 32 teeth on the same leg ,it builds slight momentum because it takes less effort and gets more oxygen ,then it crunches again with momentum ,gravity helping and more oxygen on the downstroke ,ON the SAME LEG !!!!.

biggest difference for me on an MTB with an oval 32T is when doing a steep technical climb on loose terrain the power is transmitted more linearly and there is far less loss of traction...try it to see

I ride different bikes and some have oval and some round .When i change from oval to round after a long time i can definitely feel that the back of my legs work harder on the round .I prefer ovals and find climbing is better .I find the upstroke is less effort and it kinda builds momentum for the down stroke  .i always ride a heavier gear with the oval than the round .

    Hallo

i'm a novice on the mtb and I'm busy building a bike. What chainring is a beter all round for doing some weekend trails

    34T or 36T? I'll be pairing it with a 10 -52 cassette

I don,t think you get a 36 oval .I ride 34 oval and if you have a 52 at the back it is plenty .A 34 oval gives you effectively a 36 speed ,and with a 10 it is enough .i also have a 32 oval that climbs better ,but also works on tar . Short answer ,use a 34 oval on and thank me later

    Controversial incoming…

Is there any possibility that riding on the road and feeling (even if it subconsciously) threatened by cars could lead to a higher likelihood of road rage than for mountain / gravel riders?

Honest question, I literally poop myself riding on the road and feel pretty stressed the whole time I hear a car behind me.

As much as it’s exercise with the associated endorphins and socializing with friends, does road riding not come with higher adrenalin and cortisol levels, even if not something that a rider is conscious of?

Such a pity we don’t have dedicated, barriered off cycle lanes.

If you ride and your heart is already pumping the good stuff ,you are already in a fight or flight mode . Anything can trigger violence then , same as in a rugby game . Any car or aggressive rider is immediately a threat because you are in a vulnerable position  and you will react accordingly

I am a firm believer in the Afrikaans saying, 'Dit wat jou nie dood maak nie, maak jy net sterker".

This is truly a race of two halves or should I say Race of False Hope. I felt like Wout or Ganna in that first half. Looked down at the Garmin and couldn't believe my time at the halfway mark. Started calculating finishing times already. I know, I know, it aint over till the fat lady sings. Oh boy, and did she sing. Came crashing down like a ton of bricks.

I knew that second half would be brutal but not that brutal. I never knew I could ache and pain in so many places at once.

Like Frosty said, you have to train for those hills. Atleast I now know what to expect and can train accordingly.

It was an enjoyable day out and I am coming back sterker.

The vet tannies on their e-bikes annoyed the hell out of me. Poor me bleeding through my eyes on the hills and they come flying past all smiles.

My time was 2h50minutes at the 30km sign .My final time 3h45 .Almost an hour to ride the last 30km .Last year i still had Epic legs from October and weighed 6 kg lighter , my time was 3h14 .According to the knowledgeable folks ,this current reverse route is about 10 min slower and that fits in perfectly with my previous times of about 3h5-10 . Only once did i manage under 3hours with a few seconds .Now for my first CTCT in Cape Town  .I will be watching out for seeding races in the new year

I rode from my reseeded entry in G group to a 2:53 which I am extremely happy with. With almost no group from about halfway it was tough because everything you catch is slower so there was no way other than to grit your teeth and dig deep. the steep climbs was enough to humble anyone.

The seeding seemed to be a real problem since I cannot say how many C, D ,E, and F we passed that clearly didn't belong there - I mean 15min in and we already where passing some from C. Then the dodgy car guards and parking arrangements was another problem the organizers have to addres - seemed like anyone with high viz vest could rock up and be a parking attendant. We were forced by one of those guys very early this morning(by race standards) to park at the top of Nasrec miles from the venue and very dodgy since "it is full" - once I rolled down towards the venue I could see how empty the much closer parking was and a quick call to the family meant they could actually move and be close enough to the venue to be at the start and finish and not sitting 3km away in the veld. Lots of police patrols and presence was nice to see. I miss the vibe from before COVID at the venue and I would not be taking the family with again since the venue provided seemingly nothing for the people waiting. The people that came out to support made the route very enjoyable as always. Pity the venue was disappointing.

Very accurate description of my own observations. I parked at the same spot and battled to find my way back to my car . At least i had a post race warm down . I had to literally stand behind my car boot until the helpers got the message that i don,t need their help to load my bike . My time was 30 min slower than last the last event .The last 30 km is really hard and i am a cyclist . I feel sorry for the last bunches . It seems OK until Bryanston ,then the climbs start  .The people next to the road were magic and it does encourage you to keep slogging on . I am now convinced that Johannesburg has no flat land anywhere but the inhabitants are great

Fair enough, just dont want to cause my self to suffer unnecessarily on Sunday

My fitness and weight is way off than previous years .I know i am going to suffer ,it is a question of how bad will the cramps be in the last 30km .In the past i have tried different ways not to cramp .Going slow at the start makes zero difference to me .I might as well just ride until i drop

I have a suspicion H.P. saw this coming but nevertheless proceeded to still take money from entrants even as late as Friday afternoon with maybe no real intention to actually present the race....?

    I entered on Saturday

Hang in, wait what? They were looking to have Brakfontein closed for a bunch of lycra wearing cyclist? No wonder it was postponed. They should be placed under business rescue for stupidity. That is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard. It's just as well the 94.7 applies to have buccleuch interchange or Gillooly's closed for the day.

The cyclist were already on John Vorster drive why not take them over the highway and onto Lenchen or Hendrik Vervoerd or whatever that road is called.

I guess common sense is not that common anymore

So was i the only tietkop that arrived at the  monument confused and disappointed .

  11. I dig these left field designs; they push the rest of the industry to come up with better solutions. Sometimes the so-called problems these designs are meant to solve are non-existent.

I love gravel bikes, ugly ones, confused ones, racy ones even spez ones

the niner made me send them an enquiry to which they never responded thankfully

I have yet to see one I prefer to my curve and this one definitely ain’t it - I should see a few around soon as I live in S country.

Good luck to them, creating a need where there isn’t or maybe is one

It is new .It is expensive .I have room for another bike.Where do i pay !

  14. I ride a Roubaix with futures shock 2 .It makes a lot of sense as the future shock works really well ,but now you are in dual suspension valley again and the current flexible seat post on the Roubaix works great already
