  1. UST has nothing to do with sidewall or any other part of the construction, only the bead shape and size to ensure that it will seat in the bed of a UST rim within certain tolerances. Using the sidewalls and tread as an indication is useless, every tire manufacturer will make changes to the tire as they change materials and construction to achieve the same strength.
  2. Copied from a previous thread:
  3. Ditto, saw quite a few down towards the road after the second (35km) water point. Was with a group on a night ride so couldn't stop but I plan on going round on the weekend with a backpack and fetching the ones I can find.
  4. 1. Hope you get it back!!! 2. 99% of the guys on this forum will not even consider buying a stolen bike so you are "safe" there 3. Please keep us updated with the progress (within the law of course, i.e. we dont need to know the guys name until he has been prosecuted)
  5. Weight of the chain? 10spd or 9spd?
  6. Match head igniting @ 4000fps = Kinda creapy http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/19d5x0wdhhygagif/ku-xlarge.gif
  7. hehe, that could also work, although on a bigger screen the grey is very cool
  8. Have you tried a bright white instead of the grey, think it may contrast the blue and orange a bit better?
  9. aiming for a sub 1hr, (yeah freaking raaaait) Will be a chilled first one, going to kit my bike out with all the LED colors and EL wire etc and just have a blast.

  14. Not cycling related but freaking awesome!!
  15. I use my spoke tool, also works well
  16. Try Evobikes.co.za, just bough some 27.5" ones from them
  17. The reason why you won't find a UST labelled Schwalbe and in fact Contis is due to the process and cost: "Background: Mavic holds a patent on a specific rim-bed shape and the corresponding tire-bead shape, which it licenses to other companies. To ensure compatibility across brands, however, a product must be certified before it can bear the UST label. According to Maxime Brunand, Mavic's product manager, an independent lab in Belgium is responsible for granting "technical approval" of products (tires and/or rims). Upon passing the lab's tests, Mavic grants a five-year license for that product to bear the UST logo." So basically, for any manufacturer to put the UST logo onto their tires they need to send n+1 number (Who knows how many) of samples to the Mavic testing facility for approval, at their own expense as well as pay Mavic for the license and a "royalty" for every tire sold with the logo on. Conti's license expired and thus they decided to not renew the license but rather re-label their "UST" tires as "Protection". This is also the reason why many of the other manufacturers came up with their own naming to reflect UST compatible tires i.e. Schwalbe -> Snakeskin, Conti -> Protection etc.

  19. My first impression was "Dude, you have too much time on your hands... :-)" I love the blue and orange idea, my GT 1.0 is in the process of being converted to SS and reborn with his scheme as the inspiration (Will do a build thread on her when i have got some more progress under the belt). My plan is to go the 2K route due to having had some good experience with it on my model planes. Still need to find a rigid fork that can handle 26" initially with the long term plan of going 27.5"
  20. Erm, post #82 by VicanZA http://kiekievatcoza.photofrog.co.za/gig/event/index
  21. Been using my older gen 9spd triple FD for a few weeks now after changing to 2x10 cranks, only problem i have is the spacing between the cage and the large chainring, due to the size difference and the length of the cage i cant lower it down any further to reduce the gap so have been looking for a M786 or SLX FD. My advice with a 11/36 would be to go with a medium cage RD, although I'm not sure if you have the option with the Shadow+ anymore.
  22. The only thing that I am really disappointed about was not the queues at the crossings, if you want to avoid them then you need to ride up front, but the PIGs that just dropped their empty water sachets after the water points, absolutely disgusting! One or 2 accidental ones fine, but there were dozens littering the track. Edit: Spelling
  23. Scrap that, think my garmin was showing moving time. We lost a bunch of time on a sidewall cut, :-(
  24. These have not been adjusted for the 30 min delay, my garmin has us at 1:55 but results at 2:13, :-( Edit: Eish
  25. Nice gentle ride out today, stayed with my partner's wife as it was her first race, still managed a 1:55 on the 35km so quite proud of her. He bailed after 15kms with a sidewall cut, 650b crossmarks are crap, about the 6th issue we have had on his bike in 6weeks.
