  1. There's a pepper spray thread here somewhere, maybe get some pointers from there as well?
  2. I live at the Sandton Police station and I just spent R80K on my new MTB
  3. JHB has around 8m people. This thing's not 100% correct.
  4. Ya, I'm not sure I'd give her any tho...
  5. Ya, also has the speed sensor attached to the fork. Wonder if he had a cycle computer that came with the bike when he bought it from the "LBS".
  6. Saw a woman in Dougladale this morning, looked like she was commuting, but no helmet. One day, Darwin will come...
  7. I ordered mine directly from GoPro and had it sent to a hotel in Washington where a mate of mine is staying. He'll return next week or the week after I think. Only cost me $399.99 as well, so stoked at the price
  8. Both look like bar ends to me... Just sayin'
  9. I like the Ghost to be honest, where did you look and what was the price?
  10. The iol article says that the accident took place in the middle of rush hour. It's quite possible that Burry was "hidden" from the taxi's view by another vehicle and vice versa? Whilst I am the first one to look for any opportunity to remove another taxi driver from our roads, let's not convict this driver before the facts are 100% known. I've come across the odd (admittedly the aception to the the rule by a long shot) taxi driver that puts the average business man's road manners to shame. As stated here, he hit the taxi. There may be more to this than some idiot taxi driver mowing down another innocent cyclist. Irrespective of whether this was a lapse in concentration by Burry, a taxi driver doing what we expect from a taxi driver or just one of those accidents that were unavoidable, this was a tragic death that has robbed some of their son/brother, one of her husband, many of their friend and even more of their hero. Could he have indicated and Burry did not see the indicator? This could be one of those things where the world conspired to take from us of a talented young athlete at an age that we are unwilling to accept may just have been his time? Sometimes, in the face of senseless tragedy, we look for someone to blame where there isn't really anyone or anything specific to blame. EDIT: My sister was at an intersection in her car the other day when I was on my bike. When I called her later on to say "I waved, but you ignored me", she said she didn't even see a cyclist. This from someone who has had it drummed into her that cyclists are road users too. Accidents happen, it reminds me of the first thing my mother said to me when I got behind the wheel of a car for the first time - "always expect everyone else to do the wrong thing!" If this was "just a senseless accident", it doesn't make it any less tragic!
  11. I was out for a run this morning and some teenage idiot came around the corner and came very close to mounting the curb, pushing me well onto the side and adjacent bushes. Luckily for me he was drilling his car and I heard him before I saw him and I decided to take evasive action "just in case". You could see it in his face that he'd misjudged his capabilities/the turn because he looked panicked as he took the corner. If I was on my bike going in the same direction as him I would most likely have been hit. How do we fight this scourge? Hope the ladies recover soon.
  12. That's brilliant. Wonder how the balance on that thing is.
  13. Terrible way to start 2013. RIP.
  14. 38/8
  15. Not if you're a Kiwi. 31/7 as I type this...
  16. I had a Cape Union Mart voucher I had been given as a gift and the only thing I wanted was an item that they did not stock (a Garmin product but not one they sold). I contacted them and they arranged to have one specifically ordered and delivered to a store of my choice. no questions asked and not even a hesitation when I made the request. I've also returned faulty items that have been replaced on the spot. These guys set a good benchmark when it comes to customer service
  17. I carry the long thin spray version. Have done so since I started riding. The guy at the shop suggested that instead of the mist version because he said that if there was a bit of wind it would possibly come back on you and give you a bit of a mouth full.
  18. Great answers from all, thanks. I'm riding the usual JHB stuff, with a few races in the outlying areas, so mostly flat. Looks like I'm going to need to find a few niner riders in order to commandeer their bikes for a few k's. Keep 'em comming, thanks again for input so far.
  19. Mostly cross country, although I do on occasion ride some technical stuff, but not more than twice or so a month. I ride around 6 races per year, the rest is training and fun. Some of the races are pretty technical, so I'd like to at least try and navigate those. I run and swim as well, so my MTB race participation (although MTB is my primary exercise), is diluted by participation in other events as well.
  20. Right, So I've decided to go the clown bike route this year and am now in two minds as to whether or not to get a dual suspension bike or not. Bearing in mind the fact that my budget is limited (R15K-ish) I'm thinking I'd rather go the hard tail route and get a better specked bike. However, I'd be prepared to pay a little more if rear suspension was an absolute must. I've been riding a 26" hard tail since I started in MTB, and I'm not against the harder ride, it really does not bother me. My question is, apart from the additional comfort that rear suspension provides, what are the major benefits of having a dualie in my garage? I'm going to dismantle my old bike and turn it into a single speed once I've upgraded my primary(only) ride, so any hints on that front would also be appreciated. J
  21. I think that's it's quite possible that this was at least partly race related. I can't help but have a hunch that the mob may have included at least one hubber. Hope we get an alternative perspective on this. But then again, no-one is going to admit to orchestrating a racially motivated interrogation. What irritates me the most is that even if it was not racially motivated, it would still have been perceived that way. Conversely, even if it was not consciously motivated by race, the suspected perp's race would most likely have strengthened the lynch mob's resolve to "secure an arrest"... Yaawwwnnnn.... this race thing is getting so old... why can't we all just, get along...
  22. Polar has some good entry level ones if that's all you want to measure.
  23. This is what I want to do, going to buy a blank and brand it a "Jigghead" Do you think I'll find someone stupid enough to think that Pina has released a new model call the Jigghead
  24. Depends who you ask, my wife thinks I'm obsessed...
