  1. A note on behalf of another long time Hubber, Wyatt Earp, for Barry:
  2. Echoing the others words here, I only met you a few times in person, but it feels like a lifetime in Hub years. You'll be missed. Thoughts are with the McCallum family in this tough time. Keep on rolling!
  3. To be fair here you'd need to compare the the price on Tarmac Expert eTap with the more closely specced Swift rather than the S-Works: https://www.specialized.com/za/en/bikes/road/tarmac-expert-etap/128746 That Tarmac has an RRP of R 82,400, still more expensive, but a fairer comparison when you consider the overall spec and frame level.
  4. I've always shared a similar view on road bikes - hence me still cruising around on a 10 year old Tarmac when not testing out something new. I'd agree that you can certainly still hang in there with the "fancy" / newer bikes on any road bike meeting the basic weight & geo criteria you've described. BUT the geometry, improved carbon layup, stiffness and general improvement in groupsets, wheels etc. do make a big difference in the feel of the bike. This bike feels a whole lot faster and more efficient than my old one and many of the newer bikes I've tested. Just how many seconds or minutes advantage that translates to I couldn't say, but for those at the pointy end of any race or just wanting to better a PB those might be the seconds that make the difference. Unfortunately my bank balance wouldn't support an S-Works, but if money wasn't an issue I'd happily spring for one. I would be quite happy with the Expert Ultegra at R56k and expect the gain over my old bike would still be significant...
  5. This is the same as the 2016 frame minus the paint job. This new Tarmac platform (essentially the SL5) was first launched in 2015. The main change for 2017 is felt further down the Tarmac lineup with the Comp edition now sporting the new frame design whereas in 2016 it still resembled the Tarmac SL4.
  6. Stiffness, efficiency and handing are the three areas that I note a MASSIVE improvement over my old bike. Of course, it's a little unfair to compare the two head to head given the age difference and that the Pro version uses lower end carbon (Specialized FACT 8R) compared to the S-Works (S- Works FACT 10R on the 2007 Tarmac S-Works and 11R on the 2017 version), but an interesting exercise nonetheless. Although I don't have stats to back it up, I'd put money on being more than 40s faster over 40km on the new bike vs. my old. The difference is truly astounding and I'd imagine this will filter down through the entire Tarmac range. Of course the carbon hoops on the 2017 S-Works model do help the overall feel, but the frame itself has been significantly improved since that first SL iteration.
  7. I can tell you that from a first ride on it the smile on my face (and few PRs smashed) were all that mattered. It's a whole lot of fun! That said it is early days and over the course of the long term test we'll get a very good idea of whether it makes sense or not. Or at least for whom it might make sense... We're excited to test out the feel and practicality of the 27.5+ vs a 29er boost wheel set on the same platform. Although this does come standard with the Fatties, it can accomodate a 29" boost wheelset.
  8. For me that comes down to preference. Personally I prefer the fact that there's no remote lockout on the rear. Having it on the front makes a lot of sense for those last minute situations (when you forget). But not having a single lever for both means you can independently control the lockout on each. And a separate remote lockout for each would just mean a cluttered cockpit!
  9. The Spez in the pictures is not my own unfortunately, but I do proudly roll around on a significantly older and less flash Tarmac when out on the road.
  10. Hi all, Apologies for the wait. We've now got the names of the 5 x R1500 USN Online Shopping Voucher winners. Well done to: Bennie PienaarErik KlootwykMartin BreytenbachWerner BezuidenhoudtJandri VorsterWe'll be in touch shortly via email with the details. Well done to the winners and again to all participants!
  11. Well done to everyone who took part and especially those who stuck it out to complete all four challenges! We were overwhelmed by the interest and commitment shown.
  12. And the second winner is......
  13. Apologies for the delay everyone! Results are in. Your first winner......
  14. There are 264 in the final draw out of a total of 1032 initial entrants. Here's a look at the "funnel" through to the final challenge: Challenge 1: 413Challenge 2: 346Challenge 3: 279Challenge 4: 264
  15. Hi all, Winners will be announced here and on http://www.usnepicchallenge.co.za/ at 12h00 on Monday, 12 December 2016. Well done to all who've made it through the challenges and good luck
  16. I have patchy memories of Will dishing out pain in the UCT DC train about a decade ago. And in just about every league ride pulling Jens Voigt moves on his own, in the wind, attacking the bunch (and succeeding).
  17. We've had a report from a vigilant user about "France" back trying to scam people. The details used: France 083 379 2825
  18. Yes, that will be fine. As long as the 12 hours falls within a 3 day window within the challenge period you can split it up into as many rides as you like.
  19. Hi everyone, the suggestion for only showing or allowing filtering of those still in the running are all spot on. We can make the changes, it is relatively simple to do based on the data and the way the system works, but its more a case of squeezing in the unplanned development time. I'll see if I can slot in later today.
  20. We chat to nineteen year old Enduro star Martin Maes of GT Factory Racing who was recently in South Africa for the GT Good Times Tour. Having closed out the Enduro World Series season in fine fashion with his first win in Italy, Maes will be an exciting contender heading into 2017. Click here to view the article
  21. As requested an indicator of the challenges achieved has been added to the leaderboard view.
  22. Thanks for the feedback. We will be adding this to the leaderboard in the next few days.
  23. We've just rolled into PE which is living up to its name as the Windy City. If you're in the area join Sam and Martin and the GT Good Times Tour for a social ride from Bridge Street Brewery from 16h00.
  24. There were a ton of kids at the park chasing Martin and Sam around on bikes and getting them to sign EVERYTHING. Really good, down to earth guys who were more than happy to oblige. https://www.instagram.com/p/BMLs-5pDKn3 https://www.instagram.com/p/BMLbJ17j-t-
  25. About two hours north of Cape Town the winding Versveld Pass takes you up into the hidden town of Piket-Bo-Berg. Nestled atop the mountain the beautiful Moutons Valley Farm provided the venue for The U, a two-day mountain bike stage race which took place from 14 - 16 October 2016.
