  1. Apologies missed this one. The winners were announced on that article here on 6 Jan Here are the winners from the previous competition (Absa Cape Epic 2016 entries)
  2. Could you PM me an example? The only reason I could think is that the ride itself is duplicated on Strava.
  3. As nathrix ® ©™ says it's about logging 12 hours within a 3 day window. You can split those hours up over as many rides as you like, but they must all fall within 3 days.
  4. It is in fact for the 2017 event
  5. This was a response posted on their Facebook page in reply to a similar question: "...you and your partner need to cycle a minimum of 196,2km between the two of you in a single ride. P.S the 196,2km does not need to be equally split between you and your partner."
  6. We were informed that it has been extended until 10 October. Facebook will be updated to reflect this.
  7. In April 2015, we huddled excitedly around a mysterious cloaked bike from Pyga Industries. We knew that under the black cloth sat an all new carbon marathon machine. As the craft beers flowed speculation grew wilder and the stories taller until Patrick Morewood unveiled the Pyga Stage to us, and the world. Click here to view the article
  8. Another snippet from the spec sheets below. There are some changes which improve stiffness, notably the thru-axle front and rear. STIFFNESS As with our other disc platforms, 12mm thru-axle technology boosts stiffness in both the back-end and in the fork, leading to better handling in corners and an 8 per cent increase in headtube stiffness. We’ve also boosted bottom-bracket stiffness by 9 per cent to improve overall handling and power transfer to the pedals.
  9. No different to the S3 geometry wise - from another spec sheet for the bike: "The S3 Disc features identical geometry to the S3, with classic road handling and fit."
  10. A trail bike would be great on some of the technical stuff, but this event is still a marathon stage race and includes some pretty long "transitions" on open road that would hurt a lot more on a longer travel bike. So you do want something with a good balance...
  11. When you sign up via Strava your email address from your Strava account is loaded. (The T&Cs do, incorrectly state that telephonic contact will be made - this will happen via email)
  12. It comes down to reliability and comparability. Ideally we'd use metrics like elevation gain and calories, however when it comes to measuring these accurately not all devices are made equal... at least not in Strava's eyes. The elevation data from any device without a barometric altimeter is ignored by Strava and instead they use elevation models to guesstimate the elevation of a ride. And this applies to a big chunk of dedicated GPS devices and all smartphones. This typically results in massively inflated elevation figures (to the tune of 2x what it should be) which means it's not a reliable metric we can use for scoring.
  13. Taking inspiration from the infamous Paris-Roubaix in both name and purpose, the Specialized Roubaix is a bike built for endurance, performance and superb ride quality. In 2007 Specialized changed the game with what was then an all-new Roubaix featuring vibration dampening “Zertz” inserts. Over the next three years the bike would claim back-to-back Paris Roubaix titles piloted by some of the greatest names in our sport. To date the Specialized Roubaix has tallied five wins in the famed spectacle that is the “Hell of the North” (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014). And, ten years on, it appears that the big ‘S’ have taken things up a notch… Click here to view the article
  14. I was running an old tyre and had similar slippage. A new tyre helped, but I've found it's usually decent tyre pressure (7-8 bar) and proper tension adjustment (until the click) that sorts it out. When the bike is on the trainer for a while you often don't think to check tyre pressure. I found as it deflates over time / slow leaks the slippage gets worse.
  15. After a very last minute entry I lined up at the back of the 65km. What a great route. Very few free miles, but plenty smiles with all the single track No doubt some tired legs around today after all that climbing though!?
  16. You may have also had trouble connecting if your Strava profile doesn't specify your location details. The site has been updated with a fix for this.
  17. Please confirm that your Strava profile has a gender specified. This is required by the competition for ranking purposes. After setting your gender you should be able to successfully authorise.
  18. Are you up for a challenge? Food Lover's Market have got three FNB Wines2Whales team entries to give away in their 2016 LOVE THE BIKE competition. Click here to view the article
  19. Agreed, great for the sport. It just so happens that one of the companies owned by the Wanda group is Infront Sports - a media rights & distribution company. More TV and other media coverage = better value for pro riders and their sponsors... hopefully that will soon translate into an even healthier pro contingent at the event. Although nothing can be confirmed at this stage, from the discussion yesterday it doesn't sound like the Cape Epic name is going anywhere. There's huge value in the Cape Epic brand and I'm sure the new owners will want to capitalise on that rather than tossing it.
  20. At an informal pre-announcement media briefing earlier today Kevin Vermaak indicated that this is very much the goal. The Cape Epic is to become what Kona is to Ironman within an international mtb series of sorts. What was made very clear is that Kevin will be a key influencer in the mountain biking component of the group, including the Cape Epic, even though no longer as involved in the day to day operations. So I'd imagine much of the essence of what has made the Epic a success will be retained, plugging into the expertise and resources within the WTC "mothership" where it makes sense.
  21. Mod note: Please refrain from personal jibes. Although all appeared to be in good spirit, let's stick to the topic (or at least a little closer to it).
  22. Dropper posts have fast become an expected feature on any decent trail bike and increasingly seen on marathon and cross country offerings. With the rise in popularity comes an influx of feedback on the variety of options available. Amongst the many satisfied dropper owners we see a littering of complaints about the high costs of market leaders and the inferiority of many of the low cost contenders. 23. I guess this may vary quite significantly from person to person based on your physical features. I've found with the noise piece a bit tighter they're most secure, if it's loose and the shades are pushed right up to the top of my nose there is some bouncing.
  24. Rudy Project's Traylx are the Italian company's newest addition, having first emerged late in 2015. These sports focussed sunglasses are designed for superior comfort, efficient heat dissipation, and maximum safety all with high quality optics. Click here to view the article
  25. Under-23 mountain biking sensation Alan Hatherly has confirmed he will include the popular 60km Illovo Eston Marathon – the feature race of Sunday 7 August’s Illovo Eston MTB Challenge – in his final preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
