I think one must ride where it is the safest for self and others, and not use a facility just because its there. So if a cycle lane has pedestrians, social riders and dogs on it one cant reasonably accept its safe to ride 40 ks/ hr on the cycle lane, there are many other users who will be endangered, then rather use the road. Common sense prevails

ta, insurance sorted so replaced with a set of mavic slr and rebuild roval hubs on new alu rims on own cost as a second pair of wheels, so all sorted. i have a platform bike rack, too slapgat lazy to put it on but lesson learned. on the exhaust fittings, wont it stuff up turbos etc? cant really picture my beefy exhaust pipes with curly bits on it lol, so onto the platform rack i guess

interesting one and a valid concern. lately i avoid most road races unless there is full road closure, especially the flat and fast ones where bunches are big and all over the road, trucks, cars and motorbikes all competing for a narrow strip of potholed tar. So apart from scimping on marshalls i also think depending on speed, roads and conditions participant numbers should be kept at more manageable levels.
