  1. Got myself a set of these hoops on my MTB in October and although I haven't had a chance to do as much mileage on them as I would have liked yet, I am loving them. They're 5mm wider internally than my previous rims which I really feel - seem to have a bigger tire pressure range, i.e. performance is less sensitive to tire pressure and I can of course go softer if I want. Main reason I made the change is because I managed to break both my previous wheels in a minor fall and felt the upgrade to decent carbon rims (spoilt myself) would give me more reliable wheels. This was confirmed in discussion with my wheel builder and his experience building different types of rims. The downside is I cringe every time I hear a rock catch the side of them.
  2. I believe the thousands of Chinese workers who were brought in as labour on the mines in the early 1900s had a huge impact on the shift from walking to commuting by bike. They came here with a commuting culture, bringing bikes with them.
  3. I'd have to agree... Fractured my acetabulum last year at the end of a MTB ride on the way back to the car while messing around at very low speed = 3.5hr op, 2 plates and a few screws. A bit of momentum in a fall that doesn't come to an abrupt halt could have less severe injuries.
  4. Used Stans for many many years and have been quite happy with it. A few months back I came across a large bottle of Bontrager sealant and haven't had any issues with it yet in two MTBs, one of which is due for new tyres. It is cheaper than Stans. Used the same to convert a pals Tokens to tubeless (road) using the new Conti 5000s. I did add a little glitter as a bonus. No problems so far although he hasn't done much mileage on them yet.
  5. I'd go to 'Nick the Wheelbuilder'. Built a superb back wheel for my MTB and is very pleasant too.
  6. Did a bikepacking trip through Italy quite a while back followed by a few days in Croatia with a local skipper and then some more touring. We definitely did more riding in Italy as its just more suited for it.
  7. Have one parcel that landed in SA on the 23rd Oct. 29 Dec there was a new record of it at customs but still not available... Any day now.
  8. Haven't carried a tube in over 10yrs now on the MTB, that's in stage races, bike-packing, and the general riding in-between. I do carry a pump + 2 bombs though - Save the bombs for emergencies or in races where time might matter, the pump can get you out of trouble when you run out of bombs + the Co2 isn't sealant friendly.
  9. Kia Cerato fits full medium 29er with both wheels on, seats down. Easy-peasy. A large 29er might be a problem though.
  10. I'd definitely suggest the 'Lezyne Flow' too. Durable and haven't dropped a bottle yet even over the roughest terrain.
  11. Similar concept but far more oval than the route shimano went many years ago. Biopace was much more of a gimmick. I've been riding an oval ring on my MTB now for a few rides and, although not massive, I do prefer it. Seems to give a smoother pedal through the twisty trails and climbs. Haven't noticed a difference on the faster or flatter sections. Seems to suit the type of riding I do on the MTB but wouldn't bother putting them on the road bike.
  12. Damn. Feel much the same as most seem to feel about this acquisition. Always enjoyed having CWC as an online source for goods and hope that will continue but suspect not. Will wait and see.
  13. How did this meeting go - Anyone have feedback? (Really wanted to go through but was unable to make it.)
  14. Three different brands of tyres have started seeping latex for me roughly after 2 to 3yrs. Apparently its a chemical in the sealant that slowly eats away at the tyre.
  15. Another option is the 2018 model 105 kitted Cannondale at R17990 https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/gravel-bikes/products/cannondale-caadx-se-105-2018
  16. Did the half-marathon on Sat. MC on the start said route will be their most technical ever and possibly most technical in the country... Didn't seem technical, quite a bit of district road and actually think #1 was trickier than #2.
  17. I've kept an eye out for an 'all in one' multi-tool that includes the tubeless repair essentials, i.e. a plugger & blade, and maybe a reamer. No luck. Anyone seen such a thing? If not in a multi-tool style then a plugger, reamer & thin blade in a fold-out format that's safe for riding with and can be carried alongside a mini-multi-tool in a back pocket. Basics (for a compact lightweight mini-multi-tool):~ Plugger + 3x plug storage (tubeless repair).~ Blade, thin to cut excess plug (tubeless repair).~ Allen Keys: 4mm, 5mm, 6mm & 8mm.~ Torx 25.~ Chain tool + quicklink storage. Extras (for a bigger version):~ Screwdriver, flat & philips.~ Reamer (tubeless repair).~ CO2 adaptor.~ Tire leaver.~ Allen Keys: 2mm, 3mm.~ Spoke keys.
  18. Anyone have experience with a 'Handpresso' machine for a go-anywhere-have-an-espresso solution? Wondering if they're any good. www.handpresso.co.za/products/handpresso-pump Seems to make sense that you pump it to pressure first. PS. Would be even handier if it could double as a shock pump on bikepacking trips

  20. LOOK were the first company to produce a usable frame with carbon tubes designed for cycle racing. In 1986 Greg Lemond won the first Tour De France riding a carbon bicycle, the LOOK KG86.
  21. Yes, if setup properly Ultegra shifters allow for a micro adjustment of the front derailleur to prevent it touching when the chain is in the far gear at the back on 10spd or 11spd.
  22. Cannondale SuperSix Evo (2018 standard 'dale spec)
  23. Conti 4000s - Rear blowout near megawatt park. Caused by hitting the edge of a rock in the road about 5kms earlier, damaged the sidewall. Had to stop again a few km's further down the highway to fix a related slow puncture - Probably pinched the tube fitting the gator. Was a leisurely ride after that really enjoying the atmosphere alongside the route. Conti 4000s have been really good to me for many kms over the years so I don't fault them.
  24. Have had the same with various brands of tires. Am not referring to thorn related leaks or weepy sidewalls but rather a general dampness of the tire that's particularly obvious if you dont ride the bike for a week or so and leave tires a little dusty from the last ride. Definitely related to age of the tire (over a year old) and I believe that it is related to degradation of the tire by the sealant. Read somewhere that its caused by ammonia in the sealant. Some sealants are ammonia free but I have found the brands that have ammonia just work better at sealing punctures. Don't think its an issue or will cause an issue so simply ignore it. Try wear the tires out before the latex does, i.e. ride more
