  1. I'm still looking for that clever engineer who can prove that dry lubricants actually lubricate !!!!. For anything to lubricate, it must be in a fluid state for it to flow in and out of the rotating surfaces (chain links and rollers) once the solvent eavaporates the so called lubricant becomes a solid mass, and as soon as pressure is applied it is pushed out from between the rotating surfaces and cannot flow back when the pressure is released. If dry lubricants were so fantastic then why isn't it used on chain drives in industrial applications. Its all marketing BS, making insane amounts of money on a product that actually cost very little to manufacture. Proper oil as a lubricant cannot be beaten, yes you will have to clean your drive train more often but it will last a lot longer. Rather spend your money on a good chain cleaning method than a stupid lubricant that cannot and does'nt work
  2. I would think that it doesn't really matter where a person buys items to add to their private collection. Once it's acquired its part of his collection and if he chosses to resell it, all be it for a profit, then good luck to him. don't see what the problem is
  3. those plants are known as Glentana. They will cut you to pieces, and the problem is their thorns are so sharp you wont feel it. You only realize it at the end of your ride. We rode Enduna twice last year, when we were finished we looked like actors from "Chainsaw massacre"
  4. I would go buy a fake pinerello, just to show them how pissed off you are
  5. WTF is happening in CT, this must be the 3rd post in 2 days of bikes being stolen in CT.
  6. Photshop can make clothes seethru  Dam i really need to book myself on a user course pronto!!!
  7. And that gentlemen is the crux of the problem, a group of politicians who know nothing about non-motorised transport, commuting or cycling (Barring Vadi of course) sitting around a table drawing up policy that would be doomed from the start. Handing out free bicycles to PDI's is all about garnering more votes, the same thing they do with free food parcels. the fact that the recipients will either kill themselves or simply sell the bikes for a tenth of their real value for the cash is of no importance. Don't get me wrong, giving a PDI who has no transport I support whole heartedly, but only when it comes with something more than just a bike. what about teaching them to ride, rules of the road, making sure they have the correct riding gear (reflective vests and helmets), what about maintaining the bike in a roadworthy condition etc et etc. This leads me to ask, was CSA or Gauteng Cycling present?? because this is exactly what they are supposed to be doing - representing cycling to goverment and driving change within the sport as well as average joe out there trying to get to work on a bike. Kos you must be commended on your efforts but when we are dealing with a bunch of despots in our current goverment we might as well go piss in the wind, it will be a lot more refreshing
  8. Bike shops will always have them laying around because they don't know where to install them or forget to install them
  9. Had the same dilemma, rode 26" Crossmark on the back and Monorail on the front. For my 29er I used Crossmark rear and Ardent Front. the Ardent has a transition when cornering I.E. As you lean the bike into the corner it starts to slide but then grips again as you lean further into the corner. so you will need to learn how to ride with an Ardent, if you are used to a Monorail. I actually don't like the Ardent and i'm thinking of running crossmark front and rear. I rode my 26er this weekend at NF after nearly 2 years. I was throwing the thing through the twisty single track and it had absolutely no transition, was almost like being on rails. I seriously whish they would make a 29er Monorail
  10. therein lies your problem!! Yes if you look at the pic its item 7, that step must face inside. You need to turn that bearing around. Pressfit BB is actually easy to replace with a few homemade tools, I've changed mine twice already.
  11. No the wavey washer sits against the chainring (spider) then fit the spacer and then fit the rubber seal. torque the crank to specified torque setting (40Nm) I think (sitting in my office not near the bike) and you should be sorted. If the crank tightens up or doesn't spin at the correct torque with all the hardware correctly fitted, then you have another problem with the press fit bearings not being correct or not fitted properly. Your crank should spin freely after you tightened everything up You will note in the picture that the "Non Drive side" bearing is different from the drive side as it has a boss on the inner race which faces inside the BB. I've seen many fitted incorrectly by LBS, either facing out or bearings fitted on opposite sides.
  12. you need to get part numbers 1 & 2 in the pic or you gonna be changing your Bb drive side bearing soon
  13. Oops my bad!!!! the wavey washer goes on first and the 2.0mm spacer on second then the rubber seal
  14. I'm assuming the OP bike is a TREK Superfly, if he is running a 2 X 10 with 39 big ring on a GXP crank then that gap looks about right. The only spacer you will need is the 2.0mm spacer on the chainring side which slides on first, then the wavy washer and then the rubber seal. The spacer has nothing to do with moving the crank over it is there to increase the presuure on the wavy washer which holds the seal against the bearing keeping out dirt. Trust me I rode my superfly without the spacer for months and the cranks were not loose and the position of the chain ring is the same now that I have installed the spacer.
  15. Im actually getting more and more imressed with the new Cyclelab. I used to hate going there and they were always the most expensive. But recently i helped a mate buy 2 MTB's for him and his wife. As a last port of call after getting prices from 3 or 4 other LBS i took them to Cyclelab. Their service was top notch, the sales guy knew what he was talking about and they were 3K cheaper than the lowest price we had been quoted. Today i phoned around for prices on a new rear shock, out of 5 shops, 2 returned my call and 1 was Cyclelab within 5 mins and quoted the lowest price. My LBS where ive spent 10's of thousands of ronds on new bikes and components is still trying to respond. Well done Cyclelab you guys will be seeing a lot more of me and my CC
  16. Go to Dis-chem and buy "Milking Cream" it's cheap and does the same if not better job than all these expensive chamois creams. Use Quadriderm on sores it fixes them in a few days
  17. bump - anyome !!! thanx Deanbean
  18. So i've had it with my FOX RP2 Rear shock which came standard with my TREK Superfly. Time for an upgrade. I know nothing about rear shocks so some input would be appreciated. I ride mainly trails in the local bike parks and do marathon races with 1 or 2 stage races every year. Do I go Rockshox ? FOX ? Which model ? Is it worth having the remote lockout because i hardly used the propedal which is effectively a lockout. I've been looking at the Rockshox Monarch with the remote lockout....Any opinions on this shock. Oh!! how do the sizes work ? am i correct in understanding when they say 165 X 38 they refering to the eye to eye ctr dimension X the piston dia. Any help will be appreciated
  19. Huh!!!! You joking right!!!!!! R 3 400.00 per rider for 2 days of riding the best trails in the country fully supported incl accommodation, meals, bike wash, kick ass water points, helicopter and motorcycle support along the route as well as top notch medical facilities along the route. Its a cheap holiday where you get to do what you love doing with other people who love what they do.
  20. Okay well heres mine. "Government to incorporate cycle lanes on all new roads as well as road upgrades during the planning and design stages." In the words of Jack "Gautrain" Van Der Merwe......"If you build it people will use it"
  21. Take William Nicol road from N1 to Diepsloot. Currently under a major upgrade and no cycle lanes planned. if you consider the amount of guys commuting from Diepsloot on bicycles to Fourways which I see while going to NF then a cycle lane should have been high on the agenda during planning. it would have been easy and cheap to build a dedicated lane during construction. This would have been a perfect test case. because with lanes I think a lot more people would have started to commute relieving congestion from all the taxi's which currently run the route. The same applies to Beyers Naude when they upgraded that road a few years back.
  22. I think pushing issues like having the state set up MTB trails and or parks is gonna fall on deaf ears. The state don't have money for this type of recreation. And its seen as somewhat elitest. If anything you may get a PPP project up and running with the state providing the land and security, with pvt companies sponsoring the development of trails. But this can only start if the state is prepared to give their permission to use the land and have some type of protection of the pvt sponserships investment. This indaba i believe will to focus on commuting by bicycle to relieve congestion. so focus on that with the main aim of getting them to start creating bicycle dedicated lanes and creating a safe environment for people to start using bicycles to get to work. Cycle lanes should be planned during the early stages of road planning and not after the fact. Take BRT for instance, they could have incorporated a bicycle lane through town with BRT. To do it now would be virtually impossible. I think if the Indaba could get government to seriously start with cycle lanes as a means of non motorized transport and de-congestion it would be the foundation of getting all the other things we want as cyclists.
  23. Well i'm not doing it this year, we decided on Sani2C instead. But this is one of the best events I've done. As a recommendation. Use Sterkfontein Dam chalets to stay in the night before the start. Super cheap, very clean and only 14km from the start
  24. I chose ZTR Flow with HOPE hubs and triple lace the spokes. At the time I weighed in at 98. Never had an ounce of problems and wouldn't change for anything else.
  25. Is the start still up at Sterkfontein Dam ? because the new registration is in Winterton then you need to schlep back up to the dam early morning to the start.
