  1. Most riders nowdays are liscensed with the CSA. That means they fall under the control of the CSA. If somebody brings the sport into disrepute, the CSA does have a right to sanction them in some or other way. With all the press regarding this, I'm pretty sure they will be pressured to have some sort of disaplinary hearing. If they are not liscenced, then there is nothing CSA can do.
  2. Does anybody remember Scott Ayton (and his friend Felix Coetzee) and what happened to him?
  3. What has actually transpired on this matter. The video was on ETV news last night, but I missed most of it. I cannot read through all 53 pages on the other thread. Have the cyclists been identified and arrested yet?
  4. There seems to be enough witnesses, hopefully the cyclist has lodged a case of assault against the "ranger"
  5. Virgin Activ is a rip off. You pay for all this fancy equipment that you cannot use because it is so crowded or if you are lucky enough to find a treadmill that is open, you are limited to 20mins because there are 20 ppl in the que waiting their turn. If you want to swim, you only get 3 lanes in an already over crowded pool because the swim schools have the other lanes. Try playing squash there...........there is a waiting list on the booking procedure.
  6. Judging by your size, you should go 650b. There are plenty of options out there for entry level bikes. Titan, Momsen, Merida all have good priced bikes.
  7. Depending on what you have, you only need to replace the shifters and cassette. Most 8speed rear deraileurs will work with a 9 speed set up.
  8. This is exactly what Chain Reaction Cycles does...............I agree, damn annoying.
  9. Ordinarily I would disagree with the above. There is nothing better than a proper road bike on the road. Even the best mtb with slicks can't compete with even the cheapest of road bikes. However, considering how close the Argus is, I would also have to say, put slicks on you MTB. There is just not enough time to train and get used to a road bike.
  10. For some reason, the road on which I live is a popular route for road running races. There is a particular spot, about 4kms from my house where they like to set up a water point. After each race, there are normally lots of those little water sachets lying in the street. Every time there is a race a group of people come past with black bags and pick up the litter. If organisers of cycle races cannot control the littering of the cyclists, then they must start to do the same thing. Perhaps they can charge an additional fee to each entrant to cover the cost of collection. Maybe (or am I being optimistic), cyclists will stop littering if they know they are being charged for it. I watch a lot of races on TV and you often see pros chucking their stuff on the road. Even at the TDF, you see cyclists doing it. One year they rode past a dam and at least 20 guys tossed their bottles into the dam.
  11. I have learn't from experience that the manufacturer (in your case Silverback) only warrantees the frame. The drive train fault should be covered by the drive train manufacturer. I would assume that it would be Shimano. Split warrantes like this creates all sorts of senarios and it makes a claim difficult.\ Despite what others say here, I agree that you have a claim if you have followed the correct maintenance that they expect you to. The question is who would honour that claim. Is it Shimano's problem (assuming Shimano parts), is it Silverbacks problem (as their choice of parts caused damage to their frame) or is it the bike shop's problem. Maybe they built the bike incorrectly and their workmanship caused the damage. It is going to be a big fight, but don't lie down and take it. Sometimes they will repair the damage just to create a bit of goodwill. I have also read that most suppliers (of whatever product) ignore the Consumer Protection Act and still follow their own rules.
  12. Don't forget that woman who "won" the Argus about 10 years ago, both her and her husband missed the timing mat in Simonstown.
  13. A friend of mine clocked a sub 3 Argus, that year when the wind was so bad, on a Six 13
  14. The specs look pretty decent for the price (assuming the bike is in a good condition).
  15. From what I've seen, fixing carbon isn't all that cheap. It might be better to just buy a new fork.
  16. I rode with them once and decided that riding on my own is a better option. As you mentioned, at one point they were taking up the whole road and when they were hooted at (quite rightly so), half of them had the cheek to wave signs at the motorists.
  17. I'm in the Lynwood, Hatfield area for a few days and wondered what bike shops are there that are interesting to see. Been to Bruce Reyneke, Hatfield Cycles and Solomons. What else is there. I believe there is a Sepcialized Concept store in the area.
  18. I consider myself pretty good when it comes to bike mechanics, but I've been caught twice with a clicking crank. Both times I went into a bike shop to have the bb replaced (as I thought this was the problem). Both times the bike shop proved me wrong. The one time it was the headset bearing that needed lube and the other time a slightly loose saddle. Each time I pushed on the pedal it caused one of these things to move (and click) and the sound resonated down the tubes to the crank area. What I'm saying is, it could be anything.
  19. Agree.........Giant. Has a much better pedigree and in my opinion looks so much nicer. I get the impression (and I could be wrong) Argon 18 is just another open mould frame with their own branding (not that there is anything wrong with that). Giant, at least has good r&d, quality control and makes their own frames. There are plenty of Giant distributors, meaning little things like deraileur hangers are easy to come by. Argon 18 is pretty scarce.
  20. Squirt............I've tried many brands and nothing comes close to it.
  21. I had the same frame and although I didn't physically test a 650b wheel, I don't think it will fit. If I remember, the clearance at the chain stay was way too small.
  22. I worked in Cape Town last year and must say there are lots of them with death wishes. You guys must have the best cycle lanes in the country, why don't cyclists use them. I can understand the road guys, with their skinny tyres, wanting to stay off them because of the drive ways and on ramps etc, but the MTBers have no excuse.
  23. There is a group in PE that I see most mornings (this group contains a well known bike shop owner) that turn into Kragga Kamma Rd from Circular Dr in PE. They often ignor the red robot. I have seen them on more than one occation driving in the middle of the 2 traffic lanes right at the point where the lanes merge into one. Surely, they have the sense to realise that they cannot ride in the middle of two lanes when the cars in each lane are fighting to move into the single lane. One of them got hit by a car one morning (by my dentist of all people). Do you think they learnt their lesson? Of course not, they still do it. Ironically, there is a perfectly good cycle path at that point, which some of the guys in the group do use, Even more ironic is that the bike shop owner was on the radio some time ago discussing cycle safety and behaviour of some cyclists.
  24. Other than the SA champs, I haver never seen any bikes being checked at SA races.
  25. Make sure it is clean when you take the photo. We all know dirt is a bicycles worst enemy and if someone can't bother to clean for a sales, then he probably never cleans it.
