Bike was sold to someone in Table View acoording to the Eikestad Nuus….

Let me say it the way it is:

If you buy stuff from dubious sources here, on Facebook or elsewhere you are complicit to a violent crime and deserve to be in jail….

and dont give that nonsense about “how do you know”….. you know when you know….

    jeeesh this makes me angry.

This article is a bit of a joke.

    1. The guy behind the victim called SAPS and they didn't even respond. For attempted murder...

    2. The public gave SAPS (specifically CIG) all the necessary info to go and arrest the guy that advertised and sold the bike (Brandon Jansen) - https://www.facebook.com/brandon.jansen.165). Brandon lives in Jamestown btw.

    2. CIG then followed it up and SAPS took Brandon in for questioning. They then got hold of the person he sold the bike to, and went to Cape Town to pick up the bike. So "beamptes het leidrade op sosiale media opgevolg" is a lie. I know because I was the one giving it to CIG.

    3. I've spoken to Sgt Moses. He doesn’t seem to be on top of this case. (1) It's been weeks since the incident and he doesn't have an affidavit from the victim, or the person riding behind the victim. (2) He knows who the two main suspects are through the work done by CIG. They haven’t been arrested. There’s enough proof via Brandon and other 3rd parties involved to build a solid case. So apart from the work done by CIG (really great work, the W/O went out of his way to get this case some momentum, followed up the leads, identified the suspects, etc ), Sgt Moses doesn’t seem to have done much - feel free to call him and follow up - I see his number is in the article.

What I've learnt: We need to start waking up to the current state of crime in this country and make time to get involved. If we as citizens don't, then nothing will get done and these perpetrators will keep on going, fueling drug houses, syndicates and luring other young jobless into the occupation of robbery/armed-robbery and it will just keep getting worse. SAPS as a body is incapable of effectively fighting crime alone. A large portion of the few cases that actually make it court are either thrown out or don't lead to proper jail time. And this just repeats itself and the criminals become more and more brazen.

****, that's my usual long ride route to Franschhoek.

Just gotta klap that segment even harder now.

Jokes aside, is it possible to get an exact Google Maps pin of the bend in question?

It's often coloured guys from Idas Valley walking or standing next to the road - anything from the start of the climb, to basically the old pass entrance opposite Graff. Have also been attacked by knife on Helshoogte pass. Luckily got away without anything stolen.

Yip I'd also like to know more about this and saw the same horrific photo and messages. I live very close to that area and ride that road often. I'm always a little skeptical of stuff forwarded around on whatsapp; it's just human nature to forward on dramatic stuff without thinking too much about it. So if anyone has any info about and apparent (rather brutal) bikejacking on Blaauwklippen road on the morning of Saturday the 13th Jan....

Hearsay, but from reliable sources it is being confirmed as reported. Early morning attack with maximum violence by two individuals. I'm also really hoping for more info. How do you prepare for unprovoked violence of such a nature? 😱
Apparently there is a growing fund for any info that would lead to arrests.

…would like to contribute, to that fund, if anyone has a link? Makes me very angry - not simply the stealing of someones bike, but the violence that goes along with it - shocking.

    Chris

Maybe just some more info on this.

An elderly gentleman (71) was attacked on Blaauwklippen Road on Saturday morning 2024/01/13. He saw a guy with a hoody standing in the road as he reached the top of the Stellenrust farm climb. He couldn't turn around and decided to ride into the attacker. He was then thrown off his bike, hurt his shoulder very badly (think he broke his collarbone), and was then hit with a short type of panga in the face - across his cheek and nose. He lost consciousness at some point. Two coloured guys attacked him and stole his cellphone and bike.

Another rider about 20-30 meters behind him saw the 1 attacker standing over him. At this point the victim was unconscious, lying face down on the tar. SAPS and an ambulance were called. SAPS didn't come. A case with Stellenbosch SAPS was opened.

We've assisted SAPS where we can and made some good progress on the case. It seems like the attackers came from Jamestown (neighborhood a few hundred meters from the attack). We can share some more details once the attackers have been found. We've also reached out to a lawyer to assist with compiling the docket etc. as we want to push for attempted murder.

A positive story from my side. My GX Eagle derailleur clutch went pap. Looked all over the web and confirmed the clutch cannot be serviced or repaired, which is pretty piss poor IMO. So I took the plunge and ordered up an SLX rear derailleur. Fitted everything up on Friday afternoon, got the limit screws set, b-tension and cable tension without much fuss. GX Eagle shifter, GX Eagle cassette (10-52) and an X01 chain which should not work, if the people from the brands are to believed. Turns out everything works smoothAF. First ride on the Saturday and I am back to riding a stealthy bike with no chainslap and lovely smooth shifts!

Running almost exactly the same setup. Works very lekker 👍.

    You spelt bold wrong.

If I was to write what appears to be your thought process I would end up with a massive ban here.

Yes - my comment was ignorant and I made the wrong judgment call. Now get over it.

  6. In collaboration with Law Enforcement and SAPS, we've created a Bicycle Safety Whatsapp Group in Stellenbosch - if you're in the area and want to be added, please DM me.

We have a few control rooms with private security, Law Enforcement and SAPS on the group and can hopefully, over time, use the local cameras to track and catch the suspects.

If you have any info (case numbers, investigating officer, footage, suspect photo or details), please also get in contact with me.

    Reviving an old thread.

The other day, as some of you may know, I was bike-jacked at knife point (insured bike). From the moment the guy appeared to be up to no good to the point at which I could have reacted was about 3s. I have a decent first shot on target time when I carry (standing-appendix carry). That being said. So many factors come to mind in odd situations like this. Mainly the attackers intent (theft primarily), the backstop (traffic/civilians) and legal repercussions (likely jail time if I could not prove my life was in danger or I injured anyone in the process). Reaction time more like 5s then.

I feel having a situation ender (firearm) readily available is important in situations where we are met with dangerous assailants. I just feel that there should be something in between "f#**#f" and ruining two people's lives. Thats why I am opting for a less lethal (pepper/nylon ball launcher) option as my primary response from now on. For when I'm not  convinced I'm getting stabbed/chopped or have some distance.

That being said, is giving the bike away and not escalating the situation not a better approach in general?

I'd like to hear from you all what your approach is to the armed robber. Note, not panga swinging cray-cray man. That's obvious.

Do you, like myself, completely appease his majesty, or do you have a few tricks up your sleeve to increase chances of bike retention at the potential cost of escalating the situation?

    Yours truly.

A guy second guessing giving his bike away.

Interesting topic. I think me and a lot of others share/shared the view that as long as I’m okay or my family is okay, burglars can take what they want.

But something happened that shook me deeply - now I’m tired of crime and tired of people walking around looking for someone to rob.

This time it’s me, next time it’s a much more vulnerable women or someone’s daughter. The more thieves, murderers, rapists get away with this, the more they’re going to do it.

I have an obligation towards those around me, so I cannot sit idle anymore.

I got a Amarex HDP 50 (0.5 cal CO2 gun) and a baton. Will probably cycle with the baton. If someone comes onto our property, I’m shooting (non lethal solid plastic pellets) will ask questions later. If I can’t shoot then I’m going to break bones with the baton.

    Enough is enough.

    I have a 5kW Sunsynk.

It can handle double the load for about 30-seconds before it will trip.

However, when the grid is connected, there is a pass-through function that allows up to 7.5kW without tripping. The energy meter I have sounds when the power is at 5kW or greater, and the household knows something needs to be switched off. It took a while to get everyone used to it, but now it’s habit… check what’s running and switch off where necessary.

What type of energy meter is this?

We have a 3-phase Synsunk and need to get a proper electrician to Stellenbosch as we are often overloading the inverter and then it trips.

Something like this sounds like a good safeguard.

Has anyone had any dealings with GoSolr?

We are looking at some of their offerings and would just like some firsthand feedback?

Also (slightly off topic), how do you guys keep your pools clear during all this load shedding? We have a large pool (>100000L) and it looking like a bit of a duck pond at the moment.

My dad has quite a bit of m^2 if that bubble pool cover from Builders in his garage if you are interested.

Our garage batteries are one 24V 3.something-A for each door
I'm wondering if I could change them to 2x12V7A lithiums, because the current ones do not last.

Tried this - doesn't work - amps are too low for the motor.

Scanning through some of this thread really cements my decision to quit Vitality and Discovery Bank (even that requires jumping through a bunch of hoops)

As has been mentioned, the rewards have steadily declined with more and more hoops added.

I feel a huge amount of relief walking away - is that weird?

I stay on the hamster wheel cause I'm a stingy bliksem that likes a challenge 😏

I was on Vitality for about 7 years before switching to Multiply 2 years ago - could not be happier. Benefits of Vitality steadily declined, more hoops to jump through and being coerced into getting more Discovery products for the same level of benefit (Banking etc.). I also joined Vitality cycling club with the hope of benefitting from reduced race entries, but found they would only publish the race calendar a few weeks before the next month, which is never sufficient to plan and train. Maybe they fixed that now but I hence didn’t bother to renew.

Multiply shop also offers great discounts including at cycle lab and garmin devices. I have saved a ton at CL over the years.

Was on Multiply for 2 months - but it's damn difficult to get to the top tier.

But I really appreciated the simplicity and clarity of understanding the benefits of Multiply.

If you can figure out the entire Vitality system then you can basically do a PhD as well.

  14. Which MTB shoes (not flats) do you folk recommend as a good alternative for the R4,000 Specialized Recon 3.0?

Been using Specialized shoes for years now but they’ve gone from R1,400 to R4,000 in about 7 years. So getting seriously expensive.

Have tried their Recon 2.0 but the sole is way too soft (feet getting hurt).
