  1. Bike Yoke Revive is in a class of its own. Fully rebuildable with no special tools.
  2. Anyone remotely interest in this subject will do well to read the industry view report following the Sea Otter Classic in the US. See Singletrack magazine for the report.
  3. Ok, received the service kit from Shimano. Installed the relevant part - service kit comes with three parts. Clutch still not working, i.e. no resistance whatsover. Then realised the problem (also the root cause imo) was the little adjuster. It seems the holding plate bent outwards, resulting in the mechanism not engaging - see photo. I suppose the clutch mechanism broke during it being forced to move by hand whilst being engaged. I can't recall having done this but it is possible. Also maybe when I got the bike serviced? Unble to lay the blame at anyone's door t this late stage. Maybe more a lesson for all out there...
  4. Thanks Chris F, ordered from Evobikes for R175 Shimano (whomever the local distributor is) had in stock in Jhb.
  5. My thoughts exactly. The clutch was not engaging, so I opened it (serviced it before) and started to remove the parts for cleaning/re-grease, the complete clutch unit came off, normally only the ring and adjuster would. When I inserted a screwdriver to open the ring the one point came-off (It did not sound or felt like a snap). I applied virtually zero force, to me it felt as if it was already seperated. Anyway, I'll buy a service kit and fix it.
  6. The little metal ring mechanism broke on my Shimano XT clutch - see attached photo. Are these available as replacement parts? Alternatively, any hub member with a broken XT deraileur I can buy to salvage parts from?
  7. I was born and bred in Hartswater. Unlikely name/surname for the region. Yet, the community is suprisingly plentiful (our matric class was north of 60 back in '89). Agree with posts above, unless using payhub, rather move on.
  8. Not sure how many of these bikes are in circulation. I happen to join two cyclist on the way to Franschhoek on Saturday the 18th. The one guy was riding a similar bike/frame. Unsure about the components, but Shimano Ultegra or 105. Perhaps a mix of these.
  9. Nice articles. Personally I use Smoove. I always clean the chain properly before application, applies the lube on the chain whilst working the links by hand (I remove chain completely for cleaning and application) and detest riding in the wet. The article explains why I get good results from Smoove.
  10. The latest trend with vehicle manufacturers is for hardware to come factory fitted, you buy (either one-off or subscribe) the basic or the enhanced and get the functionality, for e.g. fancy LED lights, etc. This means the car come pre-fitted with ALL the hardware! Don't know about you but I am not looking forward to have similar issues with all my stuff as with software subs like Acrobat, etc.
  11. Not relevant to this particular case but incorrectly installation of the rotating direction easily results in the rotor collapsing on itself. The one in the picture seems correctly installed. Looks like the rotor was worn due to some misalignment of sorts

    Transbaviaans 2022

Did the Baviaans a couple of times, always hated the water crossings, in fact can't even stand riding through puddles. Glad I wasn't there this year. Will also not be there next year. From the smiles at the finish line I guess not everyone feels like me. I am fine with it. Hope you feel the same.
  13. Cannot agree more, owned a 540 Xdrive with a straight 6. Would have loved to test the 8 cyclinder but BMW only offered the six at that time.
  14. The sound of the flat four/six from Subaru is to die for. Owned (company car) an Audi A8L W12 for a year in Europe. The autobahn was such a pleasure but the indicator signalled by default at the sight of any fuel station...
  15. Volatile is the correct word of choice when it comes to Ford. Dirty diesel might just have a lower flashpoint, maybe all Ford vehicles should be spec with dirty diesel?
  16. Giant TCR by a long shot. For all the reasons above. Having said that, triple check fit, the best frame will be the one that fits properly.
  17. Yes, anyone else noticed the less than estatic body language and absence of congratulations after AH won the short track in Brasil? I played it down to a home crowd thing. Yet it seems HA is not happy with playing second fiddle in the Dale camp. of Henrique congratu
  18. Agree, the amount of play seems normal. Basic maintenance - keep it clean & periodically unscrew the top part (with the logo printed on) and regrease it using a high quality grease like RS butter. Refrain from using general purpose grease. Too sticky Full service- when it gets sticky, for a DIY checkout the multitude of Youtube videos. Very basic stuff.
  19. If it is R90k new, second hand is c.R45k. Cracked frame (not repaired) = zero for frame + parts second hand value (risk of repair for buyer). Repaired cracked frame = cost of repair + maybe 10% + parts second hand value Repaired cracked frame (incl. warranty) = twice value of repair, say R12k + parts second hand value I would expect at least a 25% discount on a repaired cracked frame with warranty. Using the R45k example above, say R33k to start negotiations.
  20. Owned two of the cheaper ones - unable to recall the brand name. Reasons for moving on: too big for back pocket and lost the frame brackets for both + does not come with an extention/flexible connector pipe thus created havoc with the presta valves + inability to inflate a road tyre to even closely riding pressure + they did not fit my snazzy bike & kit 🤫 Replaced it with a Specialised one for R1k, unsure about the model name... The good: small + inflates to within a inch of road riding tyre pressure+ includes a flexible connector pipe + I still have the frame bracket + it looks snazzy. The bad: be prepared for 150 or more strokes for road tyres + connector screws in resulting in the presta core becoming undone if not properly secured in the first place. The latter is a minor issue if you fasten these properly at home.
  21. Franschhoek all around is fine. Zero issues.
  22. I do all of the above. Mostly since I am clueless and brake when I shouldn't, don't break when I need to and end up making my own (unintended) line, getting stuck in puddles, etc. At least I don't plow through muddy trails since I dislike any mud on my bike, instead I push my bike and swear at the rain gods.
  23. https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-trails/usfs-releases-new-emtb-ruling-requiring-reclassification-of-non-motorized-trails-to-motorized-for-access/ A USA perspective. The comments section is most interesting! Since it is Friday, I might add I really, really dislike Dirt bikes on the trails (any trails) and motor bikes on the road (in particular the W/Cape passes).
  24. Yes, I use to own a Cube bike with the Alfine hub. It also came with a carbon belt drive. Absolutely zero issues. Amazingly smooth and the belt drive was something made in heaven (coming from a normal chain). I bought it in the Netherlands, sold it to a local mate here in W/Cape and sometimes sees it in Stellenbosch being use by its current owner. Its going on four years and the current owner confirmed my view above. I might also add the bike was fitted with Alfine disc brakes and levers - also excellent in use with zero issues. I will recommend 100% Note: the maintenance (oil change) requirements are something to keep in mind. Easy and infrequent job, most difficult is getting hold of the required oil grade in SA.
