  1. As a rule (if that applies) they operate in groups, are armed with either guns or knives and see you coming long before you see them. They are opportunistic petty criminals with potentail links to bigger syndicates but this has never been proved. They will wait along well known trails, paths, dirt roads for easy targets. Groups of 4 and even 6 have been victims. Its not fun. Been jacked once and had 2 other close calls.
  2. or rub your finger in it and stick it up your bum. A much faster absorption area.
  3. I bought a 26" dual sus last year to replace my 26" ht that got nicked. I thought long and hard about going the 29er route, but i chose to stay with a 26". The whole 29er thing really took off just after with all the old stock being cleared out to make way for 2012 stock and the whole 29er thing seemed to gain a lot more ... momentum. Out on the trails I have found its the fitter, more skilled rider that will lead. I have left 29s behind eating my dust and on other occassions i have eaten theirs. Some 29ers look the part and others not. As to my next bike, i will choose very carefully, but, i suspect, in a few years time it will be a much more improved 29er dual that will get my vote.
  4. Was there on Saturday afternoon. 1st time I have done the "3" loop without varying off and doing my own thing as I had a 3hour window period. Did a respectable 43km with a 22,7 ave. Its not technical at all but its just ..nice
  5. Or you can buy online. Check the Northern Farm website and you will find a link to purchase a multiple entry pass. Print the ticket and get it laminated. They will scan it at the gate each time you enter. Its the cheaper option as well.
  6. Me too. Also love the stuff. Its my morning start up. I tried it with milk and found it too rich, so cold water does the job. Chocolate 1st, Banana 2nd, Original 3rd. A nice honey and vanilla flavour would work me thinks
  7. Its good to set a goal in your life. Entering a race is one of the easist ways to do so. You have entered and now have something to works towards. You can achieve a little bit more each week, and slowly you will see the results. Within the goal you have set you can also set a target - say a time to complete the race in. There are a good few months to go, but the tricky part is keeping it up through the winter months. Keep riding, do the stationary trainer thing. This time next year that 55km will be faaaar behind you and a 70km will be a walk in the park
  8. Easy one this. Bang shoes together to get rid of excess mud and crap. I take them into the showers with me along with a scrubbing brush. Give them a good work over and leave in the sun to dry out. Newspaper or no newspaper. they are Loius Garneau that have lasted me 6 years so far. Double velcro strap and nothing fancy. Just make sure you clean the shower afterwards as well!
  9. Head north up Bowling through Gallo Manor, as you begin the approach to the bridge over the highway shift down a gear and indicate for a left turn at that spot where the pointsman stands during rush hour traffic, turn left then immediatly right into that slip road, follow it all the way - it bends to the left and they are in the building on the left. Park and then walk round the left of the building and up the stairs. I was blown away by the amount of Full Dynamix 29ers they had in there I got a Rudy Project helmet for R599! I will spend more money there When I have it
  10. Ex smoker for 5 and a half years now. Went cold turkey and never looked back. Smoked fags and spliffs a plenty. Cut the spliffs out about 6 years ago, just was'nt conducive to daily (lung) function anymore. The fags went when the missus was preggers. Loved the fags. One of favourite quotes from Keith Richards when asked why he smoked so much. His answer - ' Coz they dont make 'em long enough' I dont mind being around smokers at all really, the only thing I cant stand is that smell on someone who has just stubbed one out and I think "Holy crappers, did I smell like that?" I dont do packed bars anymore. Things change when you move onto a plot inthe sticks and have kids..
  11. There are a few options One of them is to upgrade the wheel set on your current machine. Use the old rear wheel for the trainer and toss the front one in the shed for a rainy day If you get a old wheel without a cassette head off to Cajees in Fourways, ask for a 10speed Deore cassette and a slick tyre and tube, haggle over price. Go home and install The other is to do as EDB recommends and see what comes up there.
  12. Website had major issues this week. It took me a while to get through to put my entries in for #3 and #4, took muchos patience with the payment process but it happened eventually. Cant do #1 and #2 unfortunately.. I also think there is a typo above, somehow I dont think that collecting your race goody bags a month before the event is correct..
  13. I have the same problem, but have put it down to faulty eyebrows..
  14. Did anyone see any photographers along the route?
  15. My first one. Did the 40k and cruised in with a 2.26. Pretty chuffed with that. Will definately be back for the Monster next year. Loved the route, especially the smell of rotten naartjies . The rocky track up to MSP was a tester, i managed to ride most of it and had no issues with other riders walking, and some were shouting words of encouragement as I came past. Thats the spirit!! Big up to Jigghead for the offer of a lift to the start, but as it turned out I bumped into a old collegue at the spot where we were staying and he sorted me out. Thought the event was well put together, and the bottle opener has a spot on my key ring! Next year: Honkdonk 1, Monster 0
  16. Does anyone know if the advertised Pro Nutro Breakfast zone has anything else on offer other than... Pro Nutro? Bacon and Egg rolls, Muffinz, fresh fruit, Toast and chocolate spread, filter coffee?
  17. There has been debate on these rubbers before. Standard Rocket Rons are crap.
  18. So how cold is it going to be out in the Magaliesburg this Saturday? I
  19. One week to go! I am looking for a lift from Sparkling Waters to the start the morning of. Dont really want to take 2 cars out there and would like to leave the family sleeping until they come and join in the festivities later on and watch me come over the finish line blue in the face with cramping legs and waves of nausea with tears in my eyes shouting "never again" Anyone staying at SW or driving past that I can catch a ride with?
  20. +1 on the above Had Rocket Rons on my KTM. Sidewall cuts and punctures aplenty. Tossed them after one Sunday morning on the Spruit had me walking back to Buccleauch from Bryanston Have changed to a Conti X King Protection on the front and a Crossmark UST on the back. Nought issues
  21. I think that be my aim as well. Keep the engine fueled and well hydrated. There is a science in there somewhere...
  22. My camelback hones super bad. It eminates from the straps that go over my shoulders and under the armpits - the primary source of all things stinky! A good wash and a few days in the sun seem to sort it out. I also keep all my kit in a plastic crate for easy transport and leave that to dry in the sun on a regular basis. Its bad enough with the wife thinking she is married to a bike, so best I keep the kit that goes with it clean and tidy
  23. Nice! Sounds like a real tester. Am fit, could always be fitter, love the climbs, could always climb better. Not spent enough time as I would have liked in the saddl over the last month. Guess I will see how it goes. Moderation seems to be the key as for some reason I always cane it from the off and then hit the wall towards the end with cramps etc. Gotta watch that heart rate and adhere...
  24. Right then Whose in for it this year? I have seen the threads from last years race but seen nothing on here for this year so far. This is my 1st one and am toying wth the 75k real deal. Hows your training going? Who has done in the past and how did it go? How do the rocky climbs compare to those in Groenkloof - that section up Onion Hill? Or is Kings Kloof a closer comparison? Not having ridden either Kings or Breedts Nek, its virgin territory. Puncture probability? Estimated time in the sadlle for the 45 and 75k? Considering the weather we are having at the moment, I am sure the day time temps are going to b pretty decent so there is a the possibility of cramp and heatstroke. I am no snake but am keen to give it a good thrashing and enjoy the ride. Staying at Sparlinkg Waters for the weekend so making the most of it. Lets hear it.
