  1. And the winners were on Hardtails... Imagine that!
  2. Make a mark on the floor with chalk, use your valve as the start/emd point. From the 'floor' mark, push bike forward until wheel does a complete revolution. Mark the resting point on the floor and measure. That distance is the what you meaure and input into your Polar or whatever you have. They will have a guide as well. It must be the wine
  3. Judging by the amount of views vs replies this thread (if you can cal it that) has had... NO
  4. So what now? The price of entry goes up, which is only fair, all things considered. And the very recent post here that the farm is under threat. All farming activities to be suspended etc? Are we going to loose the farm?
  5. Nice thread. I'll add to the the list and boost the Merida count
  6. I had chain suck with a new chain and new crankset after a major service that replaced a lot of parts. Original crankset was Deore and the replacement was a Truvativ 5d. Chainsuck from the momnet i rode out the LBS when shifting through gears on the front chain rings. I upgraded later on to a SLX crankset. No more problems.
  7. - One of my favourite past times when I was a youngun growing up in the Wes Transvaal was to build a ramp next to the pool and hurtle towards it and launch into the air without a care in the world and enjoy the wet landing. Face plants in water are good fun! My Dad did not see the enjoyment in it though. Ever tried to ride a bike at the bottom of a pool?
  8. Take them into the shower with you. Hot water, scrub yourself and them. Make sure all the large gunk chunks are removed beforehand, otherwise the rest of the family will think you are a filth pig! Leave to dry in sun! Fresh
  9. There a simple solution (no pun intended) for this. Buy a chain cleaner. You cant go wrong. Clean chain after EVERY ride. leave it to dry and relube
  10. Safe is a relative term. Northern Farm is safe. If you go there on your own especially in the mornings you will hardly be alone! Best bet is to go and discover it for yourself. 40km no problem. Also its only open on weekends and public holidays. If you get there tomorrow morning around 8am you will be in the company of plenty likeminded Mtbers
  11. I work in the Rock n Roll industry, so smokes and booze are common place. Smoked plenty for years and loved it. My wife got pregnant and I stopped nigh on 3 years ago. Just like that. Not a puff since. Then I realized what I had been missing most - my sense of smell and you should see my climb a hill now!
  12. Indeed you may. Go there for parts, they will do good deals
  13. Yes please tell us for future bussiness?? Sorry, my mistake. That was in the CRC column in my spreadsheet. I did a quick check with CRC, Solomons, CWC, Cajees Guess who came up trumps?
  14. Today, on CRC the 73 is R173 ex shipping, VAT etc and the 93 is R190 odd ex all the rest Locally I got prices ranging from R140 - R250 for the 73 and R250 - R350 for the 93. all over the phone and from places where I know I can go and haggle for a better deal
  15. Hmmmm..... I disagree. These chains are all made from the same steel and as you say' date=' the prettyness factor increases as you go up the range. As for the weight difference, unless the one has cut-outs in the side plates or hollow pins, it will weigh the same (given a few milligrams for the difference in weight from the finish itself). Same steel, same die = same weight, durability and strength. [/quote']So basically then, the only difference is the price?
  16. What is the difference between HG 93 and the HG 73? Other than the most obvious thing - price? Durability? Better shifting? Strength?
  17. So its time for some new bits and pieces and I was wondering about the mix of chain and cassette - Mountain bike Is a HG 93 a good combo with a HG 80 (SLX) cassette? I have a SLX crankset and XT shadow rear der.
  18. The recreational users (Horse, MTB, Birding etc) at NF surely bring the farm a decent income?? How much do they plough back into the farm based on proportional representation? It would be nice if they could cut some good singletrack in the lower sections. Kinda like Groenkloof/Fountains - which is a municipal run park NF is JHb Water ?
  19. Ah Thing is, its been a virtual free for all for so long with the old signs burnt by fires or turned the wrong way that it is entrenched. Bad habits die hard Its like expecting taxi drivers to drive like saints overnight with new points demerrit system coming in. I ride there regularly and have mailed whatisname to ask if anything will be done to sort out, so I am glad to see things have been done Its a great place to ride but we all need to put in the effort to make sure it stays that way, so for some it means obeying the signs (rules), kind of tricky without an enforcer. Trust is the key
  20. Nah, no spare saddle to try out. So I will just bite the bullet until it fall apart and I will get another one. I dont mind the odd strip and clean every now and then. Cleaning my bike is ritual and therapuetic!
  21. I feel that mine is too. Its a Fizik wingflex and from what I can tell, the source of the noise comes from where the rails disappear under the nose of the saddle.
  22. My seat post creaks like MutherF%&ker! So every now and then I take the whole thing apart, wash in hot water to remove all the gunk. Same for the saddle - take all the bits off that I can without ruining it then after its all dry - Q20 or WD40 in the all the hard to reach places. Lightly greese all the bits of the seatpost. Reassemble and repeat in a few weeks time
  23. So somehow I misplaced the heart transponder thingy - the straop that goes round your chest with the magafta that measures your heartrate. Either at Northenr Farm or the Dog ate it when I was cleaning the bike of all the cow **** after. I am sure I am not the first person to loose this. Does anyone have any ideas how to replace it? Is it a simple case of buying a new one at the LBS? How do they synch up though? Anyone?
  24. Sounds about right on the money - dont forget the post and packeging plus VAT when it lands here.. Yes it will come with a BB
