I have just moved to London and the number of single speed bikes (old school and new) that you see being used for commuting is fantastic. I am definately going to have to get myself another one soon.

Get her a road bike. Much nicer to ride on the road. When you ride together just ride your mtb with her. It is good training.

They do yes. Rule of thumb... that 'flat' bit should be parallel to the ground. Personal preference I guess.

Silverback has a much better spec. Nothing wrong with SLX at all but XT is just that much cooler. Not sure about the brakes though. I would go for the Silverback.
