  1. Nevegals are some of the slowest rolling tyres ever tested, but they are pretty damn grippy. Technically, you'd be better off running the combo the other way around (Nevegal front, as it's the more aggressive of the two, Slant 6 rear). You'll likely find this improves the feeling of "slowness" as less weight will be on the Nev.
  2. For 99% of cases, not that I know of. Likely only an issue if you use those silly aluminium rotors which caused Kevin Evans to crash so hard a year or three ago. Based on what I do know, it's pretty much a lifespan/performance sliding scale, much like with tyres. The softer the compound, the better it will perform, but the quicker it will wear out, and vice versa.
  3. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering. You can run XX1 cranks/chainring with a normal 10spd chain and clutch derailleur without a moment's hassle. It's been smooth as an underwear model's bum so far.
  4. In my opinion, it's perfectly fine. I'm now running a 1x10 (32t XX1 crankset, X9 clutch derailleur, X0 shifter, 11-36t cassette) and went for my first ride in Tokai on Saturday. My current fitness levels are stupidly low, but I was marvelling at the end of the 50km ride (which included a bit of everything, including there and back on the road) at how I never once felt like I was lacking gearing. It's amazing how we've put up with so much complexity up to this point. 1x10/11 is the future. Full stop.
  5. There have been quite a few "races" and rides which I've not pitched to because I didn't feel like: 1) Trashing a chain/cassette in mud 2) Being blown around 3) Freezing 4) Not having fun I've ridden enough (and plan to still ride a LOT more) during my life to not put up with an unpleasant ride. The Rxxx entry fee forfeited is the least of my worries when the "will it be enjoyable?" question comes up.
  6. Hah, I was going to post about this as well... Went up there this morning to ride it for the first time, on my first ride with the new XX1/clutch goodies. It's actually a really nice trail, quite tricky on a HT because of the scattered rocks all over the place, but it flows very nicely. That rock "berm" caught me out, it's insanely tight and may need a bit of endo trickery to make it around smoothly. Now all we need is some wheel loving, it really needs to be run in a bit more, then the lines will start forming nicely. Great work!
  7. Phew, it's good you mention that, I thought a carbon 29er dual-sus was mandatory for dirt road riding!
  8. So, I built up a bit of a stash from a sale here, a sale there, a hubber here, a hubber there, etc... Tomorrow, all these goodies are getting built over onto my Scale. And of course, a close up of this particular beauty... Unfortunately I don't have much time available to ride, much less to build - Marc at Crown Cycles is helping out, I highly recommend his wrenching skills
  9. The problem is, once the shop fits Avids, he'll be downgraded from the takkies-on-wheel level of braking he'll have gotten used to...
  10. Hah, I'm busy getting building quotes to expand my garage (which is tiny) by adding a storeroom. It will probably end up being used for other stuff as well, but the primary purpose is going to be bike storage. My habit just got several times more expensive!

    1) Family obligations on that particular day, unfortunately. 2) I don't have a DH bike anymore! Got the Glory sold in the end. Don't worry, I feel guilty.
  12. Wait, a Hilux is a proper car?

No man, I don't want to call people who see and grab opportunities elsewhere Orcs. If the opportunity is good and it makes sense, then by all means go. All I'm saying is we need smart people like you here, so please stay!
  14. Mine too. Especially when it gets spun via marketing BS into something which appears to those who have the most lose to be a helpful, necessary, useful and/or sensible option.
  15. This little snippet and Scott's sentiments actually kind of illustrate the entire conundrum we have here: Unsecured loans (especially of depreciating goods) are most attractive to those who can least afford them. It's a bad thing waiting to go wrong.

Clarification, just in case: We need smart people in SA (here). not People who move away are Orcs.
  17. There you go Terence, here's a customer!

Noooo!!! We need smart people here.
  19. Check out the pics for even more jealousy! http://www.pinkbike....uth-Africa.html (I wasn't there, I just like bragging about our awesome scenery... )
  20. I'm getting both 36 and 32 rings with my new cranks soon, going to be paired to an 11-36t. Initially I was full of bravado when ordering the 36 in addition to the standard 32, but a ride in Jonkers last weekend worried me a bit, so at the moment I'm thinking that I'm going to keep the 32 and sell the 36t (both XX1). Swopping them to suit what I'm mostly doing is an option, but then I might as well have kept my 3 ring setup!
  21. Quite amazing how everyone is able to deduce (with perfect accuracy) what happened by looking at 2 post-event photos... We don't know what happened, so there is no point to speculating. Hope the rider is OK and recovers fully!
  22. Every time I bail out someone who didn't plan properly, I earn a little bit more of that right.
  23. Now there's something worth financing!
