  2. Hi all Does anyone know what time the Hill Climb time trial is meant to start 2morro? I am keen to go watch but just need to know what time it starts Thanks
  3. I just had a word with a few of my mates who were already there from last nite. They wanted to do a warm up ride on part of the course today - no chance - it is pouring with rain in Swellendam at the moment. Apparently the camp site they stayed at last nite was flooded, i heard sumthing about them inflating lilo's and tieing it to the tree and sleeping on the lilo so they would not wash away. As far as the course goes - i dont thing there will be a problem with an alternative route - on that pops to mind is an out and back course, the only catch is that u will have to climb more if you do and out and back course, basically climb both passes from both sides If you going through bring dry clothes and towels, the weather should be good by 2morro thats a given, but the flooding there at the moment is whats the probem.
  4. Hi there I have stopped racing my bicycle, and pretty much also stopped riding it. Thanks
  5. WoW Breaking 5 hours. That will be impressive
  6. After having visited Gauteng for about 3 months this year and travelling to Midrand every morning, i honestly do not know how the devil you guys cycle in JHB. It is beyond me. Like Racman said a while ago, it is an extreme sport in JHB. So dangerous and motorists are nuts. They floor it wherever they go. Pushing the limits. Your freeway looks like a runway with all the lock up tire marks. and the traffic all day is crazy. Riding a bike in JHB, no way, maybe mtb cos their at least ur off the roads but road racer, my hat goes off to you, i don't know it it's guts or nuts. I would just quit and find another hobby, like WOW.
  7. I have not tried either combination. I just stick with the old safety pins. The flipside of bonding ur number to your top (which ever method you use) effectively means that when u ride with that top during training and you jump red lights and behave in a manner that is not good on the road the motorists have a way of identifying you to PPA.
  8. To add to what Bruce has already said - you may have more fast twitch fibres than some, and although this may make you less ideally suited to endurance events, it does not necessarily mean you are handicapped. If you build your aerobic fitness with the right training then you will find that your fast twitch make up can be a big advantage in road racing. There are many slow twitchers who never win a race because although they are always there at the end, they have no explosiveness and cannot win. Thanks BikeMax. I know that when i trained at BikeMax my riding improved significantly. I was able to recover though an endurance event and still be there at then end more times than i have in recent years. It's difficult to be there at the end on courses like that for me at the moment. Even when at my best it is not easy. Usually i am quite a bit behind and happy to make chase bunch in the legues when racing with you guys. On a moderately hard course (rolling in nature) it is a different kettle of fish. There i can almost always garauntee that i will be there at the end and most of the time i am able to contest a finish even if i choose not to. Should i cut my losses and hone my strength even more, resign myself to being an average rider in the mountains and try to be brilliant in rolling to flat races? or should i try to climb better? I am just worried that i may have reached my threshold at climbing and being at the age i am, it would be near impossible to improve in leaps and bounds on hills considering not being able to ride many hours a day? in other words i would be wasting my time. I think that to be able to climb as fast as Dave Garret and others would be impossible even stupid for me to try, maybe i should concentrate at racing my strengths and just hope that PPA stop sending races over too many climbs
  9. Thanks Bruce, so where to from here. The difficult thing for me to admit is where my limitations are and how cleverly to address them. So possibly the best route for to take is push the big gears which i am used to and to stop trying to ride the easier gears. I am going to fatigue on a hilly course anyway, i may as well do it on my own terms Is there a way for riders with fast twitch muscle fibres to be there at the end of a hilly race with rider with slow twicth muscles of equal fitness?
  10. This is very interesting. I have struggled with this concept almost all my life. I tend to carry alot more muscle than your average rider and i have always felt this to be a vulnerability of mine rather than a weapon. I really struggle to ride easy gears at high cadence, i just can't. My legs tend to start burning with lactic acid very early on. Now i don't know if i am genetically challenged in this department and my body is just not economical at disposing of lactic acid. I also train at very high intensity and reasonably consistently. I have noticed that races with many repetative climbs in it (but climbs longer than 5 mins) i start to struggle after about 40 mins of racing. My muscles just cannot recover from riding them. The climbs have to be over 5 mins in duration though. Anything shorter is ok. I gather i have fast twitch muscle fibres, i can tell by how bulky they are, am i right to assume that even at my best, i will never be able to challenge a person with slow twitch muscle fibres of equal fitness in races with serious climbing in it? tooHot!!!!2007-11-01 00:50:59
  11. You know, I have known RR for a while and i find him to be a very pleasant person to be around. I have never experienced any of the transgressions you all speak of. As far as Kelly goes, i also know Kelly quite well and yes i have heard her be rather verbose during the races but nothing that has made me dislike her. Hell i have shouted worst things than her at people in races. The fact that she can mix it up with the boys in the races i think is reasonable feather in her cap. Now i am just saying that my experience with the 2 of them has been pleasant! Maybe they have been hurtfull to some of you, i am not disputing that, just stating that they also have a decent side and to paste them this harshly on a public site is a little distastefull. We are all better than this.
  12. That is a nice looking kit, do u get any other benefits to riding for Mcdonalds? Where do i sign up?
  13. I agree, racing in the league's are definately much harder and way more exciting. I just need to get my legs back before i venture back into the SV bunch.
  14. Well, i would agree with you to a point. The speeds on paper look slightly slower than normal but the racing is a lot different in the league groups than a seeded group. Now i am not sure if you race league, but if you do you can agree with me that even though on paper the speeds indicate that the race was a slow race, let me tell you something, and this is from having experienced racing with the sub vets, that they can make an easy race the hardest thing since going on your first date. I would be hesitant to say that they are on holiday, perhaps maybe they are taking things more "tactically" but that's what it's like at the the business end of racing. Tactics play a big part. Aruama carriers have the yellow jersey so i reckon they are controlling things heavily. You probably got Theo Bothma and Oliver Conway trying to control the bunch. As long as the threats are in the bunch the yellow jersey's team are going to have to keep it that way and if that means slower averages then so be it, as long as they got the yellow - thats why they race. Also lets not 4get that the climbs are starting now, hellshoogte coming up, now the climbers know they dont have to race hard at the front to split the group, the climb will do it for them so maybe they been holding back for this, i reckon it's the smart thing to do. Also lets not 4get that the C bunch have been on a mission this Spring to set new land speed records so the times are a little warped. I see they did it again this weekend. Rode a blinder. The sub vets are very strong and very capable of smashing all groups except of course elite if they choose to. My 2 cents.
  15. Boyes Drive = plenty accidents - very dangerous stretch of road, especially for a large bunch. This event has simply become to big to handle. If they doing road works - why dont they just hold the argus on an entirely different course instead of putting the competitors life's at risk . Their are many beautifull places around SA that they could host it to accomodate such huge numbers and if the course is not available as it will be in this case. A few places, just as pretty that come to mind include the coastal road to Rooi-els, or perhaps even out in the winelands...... I dont think that Boyes drive is such a great idea, that road is too hectic.
  16. Hi all, i am looking to build up my spare bike with campag. The cheaper the better. I have wheels already but i need the groupset. I would prefer to get 10 speed mirage brand new or 2nd hand, but good 2nd hand. If i cant get 10 speed at a good price, then i will go xenon 9speed and convert the rear wheel to 9sp. Anyone got anything they wanna sell me?
  17. Nice work hubbers, now where are you guys when i need you Come to CT, we got lots of wind and i need lots of shelter
  18. Patrick Milner (Guy in yellow) is a frikken diesel engine with turbo. He may not look very elegant on the bike and heck his dress code aint exactly cycling standard sometimes (Looks like a hippy from the 70's) but that guy can race his bike' date=' the whole milner family are dam good. I suffer alot when i mark his wheel at killarney, but i know if i stay on his wheel i will always make the split. Dam strong rider DAM STRONG! I am not surpized to see him slipping Darren Lill wihtout being under too much pressure [/quote'] I think he has single handedly caught the SubVets in each league ride so far this year. Definitely a case of "don't judge a book by its cover". For sure, he is one tough nut, part of the old guard of DIE HARD riders you got when bikes were made from steel and they use to train up kloofnek with a bag of bricks on the back on a steel tandem. The guy is definately phenomanal! If he had to race league - WOW! Can u just imagine.
  19. No, i took last night off and rested, the wind kinda swayed my decision to do so. I wonder who won, did +1 stay away (very doubtfull) they probably got caught about 30 mins in.
