  1. Totally agree you have to swim in open water to prepare yourself for open water.

I have swum well over 60 open water events in my life and that 5150 in Germiston last year was BY FAR my worst swim EVER! I had to dig deep to finish that one ????

  2. So I have full on bronchitis and laryngitis and I'm doing Durban in 3 weeks

Oh the joys! Didn't do it last year so i am hoping it is considerable easier than EL based on my current situation !!!

  3. Most blisters come from not tying shoes tight enough, they need to tight enough to hold your foot and not have it sliding around inside the shoe. Tighter the better

Also make sure they well worn in before a big race.

Edit: also try not to get water running into the shoes when at the water stations, lots squeeze sponges on their heads and bodies that run down legs into shoes... wet feet blister easier

This is exactly what I did rooky mistake pouring water over my head and then my shoes were swimming so my feet took a hammering - never again that's for sure!

  4. YOH no socks

I wore socks at 70.3 EL and still blistered all over my feet

I even changed socks between bike and run but this diddnt help either so I would def take the time in transition to put socks on just to save my feet!!!

  5. I have enjoyed reading this thread.

I do not smoke nor have I ever smoked. However, my mom was a VERY HEAVY smoker all my life and over the past 5 years I watched her whither into nothing, reliant on full time oxygen and eventually succumbing to emphysema last September.

If any smoker thinks that putting themselves and their families through that torture is worth a puff on a cigarette you are very mistaken.

It is like watching someone die of cancer only worse because you can't choose to have cancer but you do choose to smoke.

To those of you who have quit - kudos to you! Well done! You have bought yourselves and your families precious time together. For those of you still on the fence.........call me....... I will explain just how hard and traumatic it is as a child to watch your parent die from suffocation because they can't breathe any more! IT IS NOT WORTH IT!

    Edit: spelling

  6. We have never met but I am following this thread with much interest. We have been playing with the idea of emigrating for a while now and due to a series of VERY unfortunate event completely out of our control we are now looking/have decided to take the leap.

Big step with a 10 year old but we are brave

Your stories are giving us hope and belief that we too can have a BIG ADVENTURE.

    Thank you

    Keep your posts coming

  7. Not sure if anyone noticed but a second drunk driver collided with a police vehicle attending to the first incident  :cursing:

    Yes, I saw that too!!!

Good grief how scary is that - its just unimaginable!

Makes me think - we decided to ride EARLY (like 4:30am) on New Years day here in good ol Nellies! nice and overcast with a slight drizzle - just perfect for a 100km ride.

Yoh until we realized we were up with the party goers that were on their way home

    That was a scary morning!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words.

My husband went out cycling this morning and I am grateful for his safe return.

My husband went to work on Friday (he works on the mine that collapsed in Barberton) and through fate, literal fate he was not at the site of the collapse missing it by minutes!

Guys, debating whether they should have been riding where they did this morning will not change the fact that 38 guys lives have been affected forever and 2 families are now grieving!

I wish you all strength and comfort during this extremely trying time!

  9. Just trolled his hub profile

There are 2 other negative ratings for this guy from JB3 and Dominic who it seems have also paid him for this Garmin??

Seems like he ran out of Christmas bonus money!!

Sorry that you all seemingly got scammed I have done so much successful business on the bikehub

  10. I'm happy with kids, I have had a few joining classes as well as on their own.

How old and how long has he/she been riding for?

I have found kids easier to teach than Adults, they don't have any bad habits and pick up things faster.

He's 9 turning 10 end of December. He has been riding for 5 years. Placed in SA road bike this year. 4th at MP XCO etc etc so he can ride (a dam site better then me ????)

  11. Need some advice moms and pops. It's almost time to upgrade my four year olds balance bike to a peddle bike. We can't raise his seat anymore and he's wanting to go faster but can't use the crappy drum brake on his bike. Any advice on what a good upgrade should be?? Don't really want a Makro special but rather something designed for kids that's works well. I know LBS's will stock some bikes but looking for first hand advice.

If I can give you any advice it would be to buy a good 16" or 20" bike like the Momsen super light. It will be well worth your money. You cannot expect them to learn and enjoy riding properly if they are attempting to pedal close to their own body weight around.

This was the best advice we received and it literally revolutionized our dudes riding.

The kids momsens are made tough, lightweight and with decent components.

Just my 10 cents worth ..........

  12. What model Oakley do you have, and what type of lens do you want replaced, fixed tint , photochromic, etc.

I am an optometrist , long time cyclist, maybe I can help you. Ivan .0118831313

    Hi EYEMAN

I have Oakley Speechless glasses that I need lenses for. Fixed tint

I'm looking to send my glasses to someone with scratched lenses and get them back with new lenses and pay my money! Please can you help?

    It would be greatly appreciated.

    Allison

  13. I'm just wondering whether to go full gas, or hob only with leccie oven. Judging by the forums, there's little to no difference with the advent of thermofans in both gas & electric, plus with the increases coming in the future I'm inclined to go for full gas...

I have a full gas version and LOVE it. Granted the oven component does take a while to get used to but once you get the hang of it it's happy days of full roast dinners during 5 hours of load shedding

We even use the hob for our kettle, we do not own an electric one
