  1. I was eating supper at one of the Sani2C overnight stops. Sitting at the same table were some of the local organising committee with a significant sponsor. They were discussing the idea of hosting a 3rd Sani2C race at the venue. They did not sound very enthusiastic bearing in mind they already have 1 x Jhb2C and 2 x Sani2C within the space of two weeks.
  2. Anatomic also make artic fleece socks and ear warmers.
  3. If you are talking about the JMBC Tour of Jozi I will be the one dressed in about 10 layers. I have blue eyes because that is all that will be visible.
  4. If the track is smooth I push. If rough I carry
  5. I had those jockey wheels from KCNC. During one race grass/twigs got stuck in the holes and stopped the jockey wheels from turning. As a result the chain ripped off the hanger and forced the rear derailer into the spokes. Apart from the obvious replacement costs I ended up doing 60kms on a single speed conversion. I went back to the solid jockey wheels.
  6. Shane Warne - My mom gave me some of her diet tablets
  7. I was reading a "commuting by bike" information booklet in a UK cycling magazine last night. It had a section on SCR. I was interested to see if the rules covered whether a passer acknowledges a passee as I regularly get passed by commuter in lycra on a geared mtb with slicks. So far he has never uttered a word or made any gesture. Unfortunately the rules are silent on the matter. Does anyone know whether the "unwritten rules" cover this topic?
  8. We did a early morning weekend sightseeing ride through JHB CBD a few months ago. One of our friends runs a bike touring company. No problems. Not sure who was more wide eyed with amazement - us or the residents
  9. I bought a Gore windstopper jacket in 2006. It has zip off sleeves. So far it has been fine to wear in winter with a undershirt. It cost $100 then. I guess tomorrow morning will be a good test of it when I leave on my commute at 6am.
  10. Silverback have similar bikes in the range - City/Lifestyle. Not sure if they are available here. You would have to contact a dealer.
  11. And I thought that I was the only who needed help to translate into english. I did a Double Century race with Steve as a team mate and he talks as he writes. I had to pretend I was deaf in the one ear.
  12. I have never enjoyed climbing (in 13 years of cycling) and often had to push my bike up long, steep climbs. During Joberg2C I was amazed that not only was I climbing everything in relative comfort but was actually enjoying myself. I can only attribute this "miracle" to my commuting regime. Last night I weighed my commuter bike as I ride it and it weighs 18kgs ( tools, water bottle, bike bag, steel luggage carrier and lights). My FS weighs 12kgs and I have lost 6kgs in weight since Dec 10. So the combined difference from Dec to Joberg2C is 12kgs. I am climbing without a spare bike on my back.
  13. I inflated all 3 tyres without sealant using the compressor at my local petrol station just to test the fit. All 3 seated without any air loss 1st time. I was surprised.
  14. HA HA. I found a broken tyre lever inside the last tyre I replaced. The bike shop obviously had problems fitting it.
  15. Before Joberg2c it took me 90 minutes to fit a Conti RK UST to my non tubeless DT Swiss rims. I could not get the old Conti MK off so eventually I had to cut the beading. Fitted 3 UST Crossmarks to our commuter bikes yesterday. Two on old Mavic non tubeless rims and one on a ZTR tubeless rim. Went on easily and inflated/seated 1st time.
  16. I saw a Belgium cyclist doing a recent 3 day mtb stage race in the Cape on a cyclocross bike. Can't remember which TV program showed it.
  17. How did they manage to organise it at the same venue, same day, same time and same course as the Cradle Festival Autumn Cup?
  18. I knew that there had to be an eloquent term for what I was doing on Cliffview Drive in Northcliff
  19. I considered bring one in but I was not sure how well the design would work for the amount of climbing I do (365m) on each leg. I also remember that the gearing gave a low top speed (in 20's) But it is a clever design
  20. I had a bag made out of black denim. It weighs 2,5kgs, folds up into a backpack,is still in good condition after 4 months of daily use and cost R750. I also park my bike in the carriage doorway but I am currently the only bike commuter. What happens if there are 10 or so bikes?
  21. I have sent a few enquiries to Gautrain operators re same topic but it seems that they don't expect many cyclists to use the train as they are not planning to provide facilities in the train or at the stations. A few emails from us is not going to get any results. I even doubt that an approach by CGC/NGC will get different results. See reply from Gautrain on the subject on topic below:- https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/102184-petition-gautrain-for-bike-carry-on-facilities/page__p__1385701__fromsearch__1#entry1385701
  22. I have the magic shine lights on my commuter bike - front and back. Even gold foretuner drivers give me space.
  23. We got there at 6h15 two Sundays ago and the gates were open.
  24. We decided not to ride this audax for similar reasons given by GOG. My wife and I often end up riding these events by ourselves and I no longer wish to take the risk of something happening to us on a deserted stretch. A few years ago we abandoned a 400km audax as I did not think the risk of riding the section between Potch and Carltonville in the dark was worth a finishing stamp. BTW I can recommend a very cycling friendly B and B in Potch.
  25. This is the answer I received back from Gautrain customer services when I enquired to the possibility of having lockers at the station. The reason behind my enquiry is that I commute from Sandton to Rhodesfield with my bike in a bag. At the moment the carriages are almost empty so standing my bike in the doorway is not a problem. However the Pretoria link opens in a few months and there may be more passangers , some with bikes, and each doorway can only accomodate two bikes. My worry is that Gautrain will simply ban bikes from the commuter carriages. It appears that bike/train commuting is something that the gautrain planners have not planned for and continue to ignore. The bike racks they have provided at the stations are a joke. The emails that a few of us send will make no difference. I believe that our cycling bodies need to take up the fight or else we collective approach Gautrain. Apart from the discomfort of rainy commutes, my days are much better since I started bike commuting and I would hate to lose this feeling ( and gain the 5kgs) From: feedback <feedback@bombelaop.co.za> To: Sent: Mon, 28 March, 2011 8:39:44 Subject: Passenger Information Dear Mr. Brown Thank you for taking the time to put your experience in writing. We do appreciate hearing from our customers, as their comments are vital for us to continue improving our service. We recognize that travelers want dependable and convenient service. Please note that we do not have lockers at any of the stations. The only available place that you could leave your bicycle is at the provided areas at the stations.
