  1. I needed some brake pads urgently and saw that Saint Sports is quite close to my work. As it seems to be very convenient to take my bike there for other servicing/repairs I was wondering whether other hubbers have Saints as their LBS and what their experience has been with the workshop.
  2. My wife owned 7 bikes vs my two when I met her. She kicked my butt then and still does now. But is it fun training/racing together.
  3. I did not bother.
  4. Create a new, anonymous, profile if you want to attack someone or reveal the inside story.
  5. When we were in Cape Town we went into the brick shop and bought shoes from the online shop. The distinction seems a little blurred. But we got a a good deal and that's what matters.
  6. I think the whisky was J and B. We must have made up 50 places by not stopping at that watering point. One of the watering points did beef steak on a braai on day 2. Best steak I have had in a long time.
  7. Your information corresponds to my experience on DTI import tariff protection. At my previous company I was involved in getting the DTI to impose tariff protection against Chinese imports. We were only granted this protection for a period of three years and only because we could prove that:- 1. The Chinese manufacturers were selling these items at a much lower price into South Africa than they were into other parts of the world and 2. Our local factory was been in danger of been closed down because of this. When my group started manufacturing in China our imports were subjected to the same high tariffs as our competitors
  8. Not really. Distance is similar to Jhb to Sabie ( one and a half tanks of fuel round trip), Botswana road permit is cheap and some of the Botswana riders will let you stay in their homes free on Friday night. One can leave after lunch on Friday and be home at about 9pm on Sunday.
  9. I replied to the email to say I will not buy from a website that I know nothing about-especially one that has no contact names or telephone number. I received a reply from someone we know to say that contact names and telephone numbers have been added.
  10. I have bought bikes from Racer and Ronelle, and hopefully a frame from Brighter Lights tomorrow.
  11. I discovered the secret to feeling like a good climber at the Fast One. Ride in a much lower seeded batch. I always climb badly but at the Fast One I was at the front of every little rise by default.
  12. Hello Pantani, We have done a few Kemetart races on our tandem. In the beginning we were surprised to see some of the ladies refreshing their made up between stages. I still don't know if they carried their makeup on the bike or they had support vehicles. This preening was not confined to the ladies as we also saw some of the men renewing deoderant and shirts after every stage.
  13. The routes are mostly the same as last year. The only part that I know has changed is the single track piece before the final bridge. The owners do not want us distrubing the ostriches. The roads could not be graded before the race last year as it had not rained so it was more bumpy than normal. I have done both days for the past three years and plan to do the same again this year. It gives me a reasonable base for the DC and Sabie X
  14. I went along and did this crit last night. It was way more fun than sitting on a spinning class for 45 minutes. The "technical" aspect ie cornering at speed, was the best part. I think that Sonic lapped me at least 4 times. It seems that the tactics are to do 2 slow laps, then hammer for 10 laps then die for the rest of the time. After 14 minutes I had already been lapped twice. Really good for one's esteem! Thanks to the guys from Northcliff Cycles who swept the entire course with brooms before the start and provided free cooldrinks afterwards.
  15. I went and watched last week. As the backmarkers were not showing enough pain and suffering I have decided to go along tonight and show them how one really hangs on.
  16. I have ridden a Giant compact road bike for a number of years. The wheelbase is 98cm. Recently I bought a litespeed from a fellow hubber. I noticed that when my pedals are at the 9 and 3 o clock position and I turned ,that the front wheel overlapped(touched) my shoe. This never happened on my Giant. I measured the wheelbase and it is 96cm. My question(s) is:- Is the overlapping dangerous and is the only solution to get a fork with a bigger rake?
  17. Cape Storm windjammer Cane Creek barends Time pedals (mtb) Cyctomax SDG saddle
  18. I bought some transparent self adhesive 3M film from a motorbike shop in Stubens Valley. We cut this into strips and stuck it on the underside of bikes down tubes. Now when I hear stones hitting the undercarriage I don't worry about damage.
  19. Thanks for the comments. My previous shoes were Specialised with mesh inserts on the outside of the shoe whereas my current LGs don't have these inserts. Both pairs are the same size. My feet were okay in the Specialised although the mesh inserts did tear after a couple of years. The LGs make my feet burn. And to complicate matters my right foot is a size smaller than the left foot.
  20. Thanks for the advice. While I am there I will check if they have a cricket box in my size.
  21. I battle to find MTB shoes that fit as I seem to have wider feet than the manufacturers cater for. Does anyone else have a similiar problem and what brand/model shoes solves it?
  22. I spent a good portion of day 1 with a bunch of KZN riders wearing "Wild Hogs" kit. Their technical riding ability was excellent. On the one section going down to a river crossing, we stopped and the guy in front of me lay his bike down against the bank until we started moving again. Then he shifted his weight and started riding without unclipping. On the other end of the scale I saw a beginner with brand new shoes and spd pedals and he did not know how to clip the two together.
  23. Nadine Visagie is an M.Sc student at UJ and she is particularly interested in the challenges faced by recreational cyclists. With her course work completed, she will be starting work on her thesis next year, and she will be needing keen test subjects for that purpose. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> In the mean time she has some spare capacity to help address specific aspects of the general panic surrounding preparation for the new, improved 2009 edition of the Absa Cape Epic. Using the facilities at the University of Johannesburg, she will help devise a training programmes based on your individual results in Body composition, Flexibility/ range of motion, Explosive leg power Isokinetic and Power output at lactate threshold as well as VO2max tests. Although she is not able to offer this service for free, the research base to this work makes it possible to perform these tests at reasonable rates.
