  1. Modern bikes do things much better. A modern DH 29 > older DH 26 A modern XC 29 > older XC 26 A modern DJ 29 > older DJ 26 Maybe you will end up with a bike fit for purpose, but it is not on par with a modern bike.
  2. I never looked into what they sold. I was flipping through some news articles and saw they sold IM. There was something about financial trouble, so maybe they were to indebted and needed to realize something of value quickly.
  3. Actually not, they used to own Ironman. Back in March Wanda sold Ironman to a family group, called Advance. They involved in media. I don’t think Wanda sold Epic though. The numbers were favorable to sell Ironman, but they haven’t owned Epic long enough to realize a sizable gain.
  4. I would think, given the size of some of the towns the race goes through, accommodation will sold out with/without supporters - there isn't always enough. Bigger towns with more accommodation would probably feel it more
  5. If it doesn't go ahead in 2021 there may never be another Epic. They have still been paying people to main trails, they have admin costs (yes, people have been planning, weighing up options, looking at scenarios, asking what ifs, etc). These costs have not disappeared, and the financial impact of not hosting it in 2021 will be detrimental. I think everyone will be happy if they can ride the Epic, with or without spectators
  6. I remember this - right shifter = rear derailleur, rear brake
  7. But there is more grip on tar than on dirt/grave, so when you refer to additional grip, then disks make more sense on road bikes.
  8. any hr strap with ant+ (which is basically every hr strap made other than polar) will work with garmin. the older polar straps had some other wireless communication not supported by other devices, but that is no longer the case - new polar straps support ant+ or bluetooth
  9. the 830 touch screen is great, dont let the bad rep of the 820 put you off. it works with most gloves and even if it get water on it there is no impact on how it works
  10. Have you asked Garmin whether that can do a warranty replacement on you device? Their policy covers cracked screens, so maybe it will cover the turn system
  11. wow, some of those mounts are expensive. i would think for most people it would be better to look for a second hand garmin, much like frosty punted
  12. I think eddy has a point, that rotor is not sitting flush against the hub, and it should. I don’t think the hubs are boost, and OP did say they were non-boost.
  13. That’s just what I was saying, think my comment may not have been clear. But yes, easier to convert thru axil to qr given the internal diameter of the they axle hub can accommodate a tiny qr axle with the correct adapter
  14. if it not designed to be thru axle compatible, how does the thru axle fit in the hub? Easy to change from small diameter axle to large, not so easy the other way round
  15. That's a through axle, just not an axle that requires a hex key. I think most fox forks have that axle. I think the cap that has been removed from the disk side may need to be swapped out with the cap on the non-disk side
  16. Your argument is not making sense here. Your issued appeared to be large (pretentious, over the top) branding and being a walking advertisement, but your real issue is the margins. Many premium bands have very small, hardly noticeable branding and only those paying attention would notice this. But those people are already aware of the brand anyway, and no amount of marketing/exposure will change their buying habits anyway.
  17. On my last 94.7 I was pulling the bunch up Malibongwe, and turning on to Witkoppen I took a sip of water and dropped my bottle. I didn’t want to lose the bunch after work hard to get there, to make one bottle last till the end of the race. When it’s absolutely necessary, your body adapts well. I continued to drink throughout the remaining 60+ km, but just small sips
  18. Why must people's mindsets change? If a person is happy riding a +R100k XC bike on a district road, that's fine. To each his own. I know people who love to go out on long rides, on district roads. For them a light weight XC bike makes sense, even though the XCs are not intended for that purpose. Why ride a heavier ST bike. Some people just want to be outside, doing some form of activity, and want to have a nice bike to enjoy. Not everyone wants to rip down trails and bomb it down hills while jumping every bump in sight.
  19. Actually there are two points, you just too narrow minded to see them: 1. riding single file on a narrow road with no shoulder will always be dangerous and motorist will get annoyed and ask the question 'what are these roadies thinking riding on this road' 2. it's always roadies that are perceived to have bad attitudes, but guys on their mtb's also have attitudes and block/take up a fair bit of road space given the design/specs of their bikes
  20. I think all the roadies should get in their cars and drive in a bunch, single file on these said road at 40kmh, and see how that p1ss3s motorists off. Maybe the problem lies more with the government's inability to maintain roads/build better roads. And to the guys on their MTB's complaining roadies think they own the roads, how many of you are riding bikes wit handle bars so wide it is comparable to two roadies riding breast.
  21. Is it not too soon to tell - maybe some more time on your track, the Garden Route trails, etc and you might change your mind? Some days I ride my road bike and think 'this is all I need', and then I go out on my MTB and think 'wow, how I have missed this'
  22. I feel IFRS16 is quite encompassing - even sale and leasebacks, although allowed, don't result in pretty balance sheets anymore. I think the regulators achieved what they wanted.
  23. Non e-bikes are better. I have a friend who was 80km into a stage race and his battery fell out of his e-bike and I had to get him back over the remaining 28km
  24. So what happens you are 80km into it race, 28km to go and snap, there goes your buddy’s shifter cable. You still got to get him back. Mechanical is not fool proof either, so you argument here seems pointless
  25. 1x12 I should probably have changes the cassette 2000/3000km earlier, but there was no skipping or issues like that. The chain just didn't sit nicely and was making a noise. But since the cassette was old, and the chain was a recycled from an earlier life cycle, I wasn't worried about excessive wear and just carried on abusing it
